Minor correction - West Ham weren't originally known as Thomas Ironworks. They were known as Thames Ironworks Football Club, named after the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company that they worked for (based on the River Thames, in the hamlet of West Ham before it got incorporated into London). Interesting sidenote, Thames Ironworks was the company that built HMS Warrior, the first fully ironclad warship.
Also “The Irons” is probably the “popular” nickname amongst the fans (certainly the regular attendees where you hear the chant “common you Irons” not “common you hammers”) whilst “the Hammers” is the more commonly used generally.
@@grahambrown3519 it’s strange actually. I’m a fan myself, and the best way to describe it is that the team and the club are “the Irons” but that the fans are “the Hammers”. Of course you can chop and change things about, but I’d say that “I’m a Hammer, I support the Irons.” It feels weird to call the fans, “the Irons”. And you’re right: Irons are much preferred over Hammers (or ‘“Ammers”, if you want!”
Been going since the 60’s and a season ticket since the 80’s. As a kid growing up in Kent I always knew them as “the Hammers”. It was only when I started going regularly that I heard “the Irons”. That is the prevalent one in the ground by the fans, talk to any “outsider” though and it is “the Hammers” refer to “Irons” and I suspect many might think you a Scunthorpe fan😊.
Not exactly a sidenote, the shape of the shield of west hams crest is literally a cross section of the hull of HMS Warrior. They were always on the nose about that.

Just wanted to comment that Leicester were not only not expected to win the league, but were actually considered relegation candidates, only avoiding it the previous season thanks to a ridiculous win streak. One of the biggest football shocks that I have ever seen.

Interestingly, you dont hear United fans referring to United as 'Man U' its usually fans of other clubs. Matt Busby hated the term 'The Busby Babes' apparently too, The Red Devils became more of an official nickname AFAIK in the 50's because he (Sir Matt) thought it more reflected the character of his team.

The reason Football teams have, and indeed are required to have alternative jerseys with different colours is to avoid the confusion when 2 teams just so happen to have similar looking colours. makes it easier for the audience, cameras, commentators, the players themselves, to follow the action.
Or, in the case of Man U, rampant capitalism.
More specifically, it was also to help distinguish teams when they appeared on TV back in the early days of the 1950's and 60's, as most people back then only only black and white TVs.
A televised match between say, Man United (in red) vs Chelsea (in blue) would be almost impossible to know which team was which, because red and blue both just look 'dark' on a black and white TV, so one team would need to play in a 'light' colour (like white) to make it obvious who was who.
Colour TV didn't become widespread till the late 60's, early 70's, but by then the tradition of having two kits had become normalized.
Side-note - I think I'm correct in saying that the 1966 World Cup final between England and Germany was the first match in England to be broadcast in colour
It so funny for me, as a Brazilian to see someone having to explain the concept of promotion and relegation. When I first started to watch American football I was so confused how the worst teams are basically rewarded with better draft picks instead of relegated.

Chris...A note about my adopted FA team, Wolverhampton. It is NOT orange on their kit, it is called"old gold". Also, Wolverhampton is know as the "Wanderers" after merging with a cricket club, Blakenhall Wanderers, in 1879. One other notable thing about the Wolves, in 1967, the whole team was imported to play as the Los Angeles Wolves, in the original North American Soccer League, as a preparation to compete in the Premier League, to which they had been recently promoted.
As far as why I, a Chicago native, would choose Wolves as my team? Well, an incredibly rich and very old team from the Midlands, that too often failed to have success, reminded me of a hometown Chicago team that I cheer for, The Cubs!
Does any British football club play in orange? Wolves you say is old gold, Blackpool is tangerine, my team is Maidstone United and it's black and amber for us. Looked up Dundee...says "tangerine" as well. Any others? Maybe in Northern Ireland...

@@sam1111979 Luton Town, apparently! Orange is mentioned in their Wikipedia page and in other websites, although I cannot find any official club statement on the colours. Hull and Barnet also go with ''amber'' .
Fun music-related connection: Steve Harris, founder and bassist of legendary metal band Iron Maiden was a promising football player in his youth and was offered a slot at the West Ham youth academy , but eventually chose music over football. He has supported West Ham very publicly all his life and "Up the Irons" is a common slogan among Iron Maiden fans. I wonder how many of them realize they are actually giving tacit support to West Ham when they say it though.
They've recently produced West Ham related merch (claret and blue, some references to the club) with an official affiliation with the club

Crystal Palace stood out to me for different reasons; I really like the logo/crest it looks awesome, the history of the crystal palace building is cool, and when I began to follow last season, I kinda liked watching them because they seemed like they always played and fought hard each game, and gave their opponents a tough fight each time, it seemed to me. And I felt myself root for them when I'd watch highlights
Fun fact about Liverpool and Everton, Everton used to play at Anfield before a dispute over rent I believe it was made Everton come to the decision to leave Anfield and setup at Goodison Park allowing Liverpool to be setup and take Anfield as their home and the rest is history as they say.

Since you’re an Ohio guy, one of the more interesting crossover between sports and history is the “American football game that ended a war”, which took place during the 1995 Dayton Accords. There’s a video about it over on the Wayback history channel, definitely a story worthy of more attention.
Another sports/history crossover story that probably should have a full documentary is the history of the Yankees, when I was a kid I read “The Complete History of the New York Yankees, 1901-2001”, which is as much about the politics and history of New York City (Tammany Hall, etc.) and America at large as it is about anything on-field. If you ever get the chance to read it, it’s a pretty incredible hundred-year odyssey.

As a big football fan from the Netherlands I can say that football is more like a culture then just a sport. I go to a lot of away games from my big local club PSV Eindhoven. Going to Sevilla next week with 3,000 of my fellow supporters. It is just such a great experience all chanting together and having the best possible time supporting our club that goes a lot further then support in American sports. As I am a big basketball fan as well there is a lot different between sport experience in America and in Europe. BTW Love all your content and I would highly recommend the Netflix Serie: The English Game.

I totally get the not wanting to join a bandwagon... that one spoke to me. Also cheering for an underdog or a Championship team makes it so much more satisfying when they achieve greatness.

My dad's side of my family is from Edwinstowe, right there in the heart of Robin Hood country. Forest was a team I considered.

I'm very happy that Madison has a League One team "Forward Madison FC", and the name is fantastic. We're the Flamingos, or Mingos, named after the tradition of putting plastic pink Flamingos on Bascom Hill on the UW campus. The forward part is tribute to the state motto I believe. Awesome jerseys, a 100+ yr old stadium, and great atmosphere. Cool video!

Cool reaction. In college (2001) we traveled to the UK and played for the Crystal Palace Eagles. This was before they were a premeire league team. It was pretty cool experience marching on a soccer field as opposed to an american football field (grid iron).
I fell in love with Football watching highlights on ESPN top ten, then picked up FIFA ‘06, and catching matches here and there when we could in the States.
Something about Arsenal drew me in fairly early on and I’ve just been in disbelief seeing them at the top of the Prem with a great chance to win it.

Love this crossover. The name of my team, Wigan Athletic, obviously comes from the town of Wigan, in Lancashire (or Grater Manchester to most people outside of Wigan). Not really sure why we have the Athletic bit but it gives us our nickname “the Latics.” There’s honestly never a dull day supporting Wigan

As a Leicester season ticket holder, I remember hearing one of the reasons for the nickname was that Foxs glacier mints were produced in Leicester and being a popular sweet, it gave the club it's nickname. Also the Foxes winning the Prem as 5000/1 outsiders was amazing, the entire decade supporting this club as been a roller coaster but that season was something never to be forgotten, right down to the final game against Everton where a veritable horde of Italians turned up around the club, the weather was sunny with torrential storms, a rainbow and a little bit of Opera added to the occasion by Andrea Bocelli.........as a side note, Leicester were originally called Leicester Fosse and I think the old nickname was the Fossils.
I’ve travelled to craven cottage numerous times as an away fan and it’s still one of my favourite stadiums, it’s a great area, stadium is right on the Thames and it’s still got that old authentic feel around it to the point where you feel that you’re going to fall through the stand when you celebrate.
This was a fun episode to watch, I'm a big gunners fan! Excited for this season.

Everton was the 1st team to play at Anfield also Liverpool's original name was Everton FC & Athletic Grounds Limited but the FA at the time told them to change it because they wasn't allowed to use the name Everton so the owner of ground changed it to Liverpool.
Newcastle used to be a big team, they were one of the best in the late 90s early 2000s, Alan Shearer, the premier leagues highest ever scorer was a local boy and Newcastle legend, unfortunately they suffered under Mike Ashley until they were bought by the consortium and they are simply returning to the levels they used to be, I think they set the international record transfer fee when they signed Shearer. I'd recommend you look into them and their history, they've had some great players, many of which are some of the best of all time including Shearer, Ginola, Gascoigne and Keegan.

The background of the Leicester City badge is actually a cinquefoil that’s the city adopted from Robert de Beaumont who was given the title of earl of Leicester by William the conqueror. But earls being earls means the Earl of Leicester lives in Norfolk
The Chelsea badge is to do with the Earl of Cadogan who founded the club and initially played in the colours of the earl

My favorite football club is in Germany, SV Darmstadt 98 is referred to as the Lilien (Lilies) but don't flower fool you. The Lily was the royal flower of the royal house of the Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt (Hesse by the Rhine). They currently sit first in Bundesliga 2 being chased by Hamburg SV, Heidenheim and FC Kaiserslautern. They now get $$$ from Merck who is Darmstadts largest employer and with a major stadium renovation are poised to make a run for the Bundesliga for the second time since reunification.

fun fact in 1985 Trammel Crow built the Infomart in Dallas modeled after the Crystal Palace, identical structure with tons of windows really neat to drive by.
Just a bit of cool info for any americans watching. The ships on the manchester clubs logo is a bitter reminder for people from liverpool of the building of the manchester ship canal. This is one of the reasons for the animosity between the football clubs of the two cities as the manchester shipping canal took lots of jobs away from liverpool and making their dockyards more redundant. This led to Liverpool being plunged towards poverty while manchester started to overtake Liverpool in terms of relevance. It is one of the key roots of the rivalry.
Leicester City winning in 2016 was the win that gives every fan of every club that isn't in the big 6 hope that their club could win the league.
The Story of the Crystal Palace building itself is pretty cool too if you like architecture. Wonder if there is a good video out there about it...

Oh WOW! When you did those videos on your ancestry a while back I was going to comment on if you had a relative called Sammy Whittaker, seeing as you had relatives that fit the bill. I had conveniently been looking up on 1900s-30s Villa history at the time of those videos, very cool that you have confirmed that! (I'm a Villa fan and clearly a fan of this channel, UTV)
I would recommend the "Roots of the Rivalry" series that Rabona TV does on many diffrent football rivalrys across the word from Brazil vs Argentina to AC Milan vs Inter Milan.

Fully agree with your not wanting to support a Big Six (or soon to be Seven) club. I ended up supporting Hull City. Since I've been a fan the Tigers have been in the Premier League, the Championship and League One (thankfully back in the Championship). It hasn't been dull, that's for sure. Up the Tigers! 🐯
Went to an under 21s Everton vs Southport match with my mum and aunt, who both support Everton. At one point in the game, the ball got launched way up into the air and seemed to be heading towards us, sat behind the goal. My mum goes "I think it's coming towards me... oh, it is" and, about a second later, it bounced square off her head. Everton lost the game and, being a Liverpool fan, I never miss a chance to mention that part of the story

26:46 As a Watford fan I'll just point out a male Red Deer can be called a Hart. Hence being the animal of Hertfordshire (Hert pronounced like heart). The players of the team are often called the Golden Boys as a collective, although it's not really a broader nickname for the club like The Hornets is. The Hornets as a nickname is also very often shortened to The Horns, or even The Orns, as well. I basically never call us The Hornets because I just say The Orns.
Southampton went through several name changes before settling on Southampton FC.
As mentioned in the video they started as St Mary's Young Men's Association (Abbreviated to St Mary's YMA). They then changed to St Mary's FC in 1887, then to Southampton St Mary's FC in 1894 and finally Southampton FC in 1896.
In 1898 they moved to a stadium called The Dell and remained there until 2001. After that they moved back into the St Mary's area of Southampton to a new stadium called St Mary's Stadium which was a good nod to the origin of the club.
Sadly I don't see my team remaining in the Premier League based on current form. But Southampton have a history of pulling off great escapes from the bottom of the league so I can hope.
Beyond simply loving the game, I love the history aspect of soccer/football. So many clubs across Europe have fascinating histories/ties to history/politics.
My favorite Premier League team is probably obvious. As a Crew fan you probably don't have the fondest memories of my MLS team (Portland Timbers). Also I support Celtic in Scotland so there are some disagreements there too.
Other side note, HITC Sevens and TIFO Football have done videos that touch on football history, which might make for good reactions.

It always surprises me how close some of the clubs are to each other(especially in London) and are able to consistently fill their stadiums. In the U.S., it’s pretty rare for a pro team to be within driving distance of each other.

"You'll Never Walk Alone" is a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel.
I always found interesting that a good amount of football clubs had a 'Spion kop' as a part of their ground, usually standing terraces that made up one end. A lot of Stadia were built early 20th century and presumably the ends were named after the famous Boer war battle in places which had regiments in that battle. Liverpool, Leeds, Birmingham City and Arsenal's stadium before Highbury all had a Spion kop. The word 'kop' is Afrikaans for vantage point, I think.

Another interesting fact missed in this vid is that Everton and Liverpool were originally one club who split into two due to some internal dispute, with Everton being the original name and also one of the founding members of the English Football League along with Wolves and West Brom
22:04 canaries were popular in Norwich since the 1600 when Huguenots fleeing Belgium and the Netherlands brought them with them. However, they really took off when they were used by miners who would go down mineshafts with a canary in a cage. The canary would die from poisonous gas before being noticed by humans so they were a useful tool. :-)

My friend is from England, and is a massive Aston Villa fan. So looking for a club in England to root for, he talked me into that one. So someday I hope to go to London with him and go to a match.
That clip at the 2 minute mark was filmed at Loftus Road, home of Queens Park Rangers (QPR, the Super Hoops, the Rs or Rangers), a Championship side and the team that i support. They are within a few miles (or kms) away from 3 other West London teans; Chelsea, Brentford and Fulham.
How this South African became a Rs fan is a long story.
in terms of football the closest derby is between Nottingham Forest and Notts County at only 0.26 miles, literally just directly across the river trent from each other.
I was tempted to call Southampton the "Aints" but that's just the Falcon fan in me taking extra shots at the head hunters in New Orleans. Lol.
