Perfektně připravené a zahrané.

I don't like word "czechia" (even how it sounds). But it has one great andvantage - you can use it as a name for czech state cross a history. I'm czech guy who living in Ireland and sometimes it's hard to have a conversation about czech history. To use "the Czech republic" in conversation about middle ages is not just correct. And irish people have (of course) no idea what/when/where the Bohemian kingdom was. So you have to explain what was Bohemian kingdom, Czech kingdom, Austria-Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Czechoslovak socialistic republic, Czech and Slovak federative republic etc. You can use just (fuc*ing) "Czechia in 17th century" and everybody know what you're talking about.
Yes, Czechia is timeless - it bridges all state-political formations in the course of history. It is not about like-dislike, it is about the general benefit - not to cut off our more than thousand years old history by using transient political name.
You can very well use "the Czech kingdom" or "the lands of the Czech crown" instead of Czechia as this state form had been existing continuously for about 700 years until WW1, even within the Austrian Empire. (Emperors were crowned with the czech crown except the last one who refused it). The term Bohemia (or Moravia) is also historicaly more familiar to the western audience than the scarcely occuring "Czechia".
@@michaldevetsedm1882 However, the crown was Bohemian, not Czech. Many of Bohemian kings even didn't speak Czech. We can speak about the Czech National Revival, but not about the Czech Kingdom. When we speak about Czech lands, we mean just the two core ones of all Bohemian lands. Lusatias were not Czech lands, even though they were Bohemian lands. Most of Silesia(s) as well. However, Czechia can be used as a timeless and retrospective name of the country itself, while "Czech Republic" cannot be used retrospectively.

@@johnhlavacka2481 104 / 5000 If someone did not hear about Czechia before the Nazis started talking about it, it would be more of a problem of education and acquaintance. Some names for Germans, Russians etc. can be felt also "derisive". However, Václav Hájek z Libočan was not a nazi when did use the word in 1541 in his Kronyka Czeska, as well as Daniel Adam z Veleslavína in his 1598 vocabulary. At least since 1841, the name was used also in English texts (Peter Heylyn used the form "Czechian" even in 1625). Josef Ruda titles his 1837 work "Phytotoxicologiae čechicae tentamen, exhibens plantas venenatas Čechiae indigenas." Also the Moravian bohemist František Trávníček can be accused of sympathy for communism, but certainly not for nazism. Etc. And it was the Nazis who paradoxically called their protectorate "Böhmen und Mähren", not "Tschechei". Austrian absolutism was also interested in weakening the historical unity of the Czech lands and their common identity.

Thank you, Dream Prague (also for citation), a very beneficial summary for both English speakers and Czechs with their traditional myths and fallacies about the name Czechia. Simply: the Czech Republic is nothing else than the current state formation in Czechia. This is the point. Czechia is a geographic, timeless, universally applicable name, the Czech Republic is a political, naturally transient name. While the political name is only applicable in official documents, such as international treaties, the geographical name has its clearly defined natural function in all other cases. In the said "all other cases", the political name can never replace the geographical name because, unlike the latter, it has a temporary character ignoring the historical continuity of the state, and so its function is limited to the current state subject.

Awesome video! Hilarious :) FWIW, this American always called it "the Czech Republic" out of respect for what the Czechs have accomplished. I learned about this "Czechia" option while planning our visit. Hubby and I asked people in Prague, Olomouc, Verovany, Cisarov... what they wanted us to use. Nobody we asked cared either way. Therefore, we've since switched to "Czechia." It just feels like an affectionate name I'd call my brother or BFF. And I love the Czech Republic.
Very well put! You´ve hit the nail. As a Slovak living in Czechia for 10 yrs, I wondered how they can do without the short name for the country in foreign languages, the equivalent of "Česko". So when the form "Czechia" was finally announced I was glad that finally they can stop using the clumsy designation "Czech" :-) I explained this to my American relatives some 2 yrs ago, so I can send them this link again :-) Great job!

Awesome as you always are. This topic is very interesting also for all Czechs! I think we have shortcomings in this area. Good choice! Btw i like Czechia!
Třeba to příjde časem :) Thanks for your videos, you speak czech very well :)
This video is just awesome! I really like how you decided to approach this problem as an "outsider" to this quite internal issue, I would say. Honestly, I have no problem with using the short name in English (actually it's the default version I use, and use the longer version only when someone's visibly confused as to what country it is). I'm pretty sure it's going to get used more and more as time goes on (its use with English-speakers is already growing, I feel like). Czechs just don't like change and sometimes don't even understand why just "Czech" is wrong and clunky (because most Czechs don't have very good English). But I feel like in the ened, eventually, they'll get kind of used to it as well. Or at least I hope they will. And honestly, using either one or both interchangeably is fine too. As both the Czech Republic and Czechia are valid names for our country, I'm fine with people using either name.
Great video! I'm sure even many Czechs couldn't do it better ;) I think this problem is very much connected with the new Czech name of our country, "Česko" (Czech equivalent of Czechia). I know a lot of people hate it and don't want to use it (even among journalists) for many different reasons, most of which you have covered in this video. Actually, I am a linguist and in my opinion the use of this short name is not only very practical in many non-official situations but also logical (as it surely includes all Czech lands as opposed to Čechy). As it seems all this hassle is really just a matter of habits. It's a new word and people are simply not used to it. That's all. But they like to discuss it a lot like many other things. It's such a Czech folklore - endless discussions, preferably having a beer in a pub :))
You are absolutely right: old habits die hard. What is striking is how many stupid reasons the Czechs come up with to justify their inability and unwillingness to learn and use something new despite Czechia being much more practical than the Czech Republic in everyday speech or writing and the fact that we use short names for the vast majority of countries, including all European countries (perhaps with the exception of Britain).
Neřekl bych, že Česko je "new Czech name of our country".
@@pavelnovy491 well, you are certainly helping things by calling people stupid. What would the people in The States think if their government told them to go and call their country West Indies. And some zealots would paint the critics as stupid then.

Great video and great arguments. You may not know that we actually had the very same issue even with Česko. I myself was sure 25 years ago that I would never say loudly this word, it sounded so strange and non-Czech back then. And today people are used to it and nobody argues or complains. The same will happen with Czechia.
I was looking for a clarification as to why I started hearing 'Czechia' being used quite recently and apparently out of nowhere and your video provided a very clarifying and neutral explanation, thanks a lot!
I enjoyed the role playing, so entertaining. I prefer to call it CZ country, I don't care about the name. I just love Prague. Thanks for this :) P.S. You are a good actress. :)
Dear „Dream, “thanks for your kind help. Your next step could be to convince the editors of anglophone and/or ex-pat media and websites, such as Prague Morning (and some others). They insist on „the Czech Republic“ always and everywhere. It hurts me most in sentences like „Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic came to an agreement….“ Will you have a try?
The strange thing is that the generation of those expats left Czechoslovakia at a time when no Czech Republic yet existed, and Czechia was a part of the Czechoslovak republic. The problem probably is what types of people get to the head of such expat media and communities. Some well-known Internet characters appear to be stuck psychopaths rather than expats. It is similar with the Moravist movements in Moravia - a decent Moravian is ashamed of them.
One good thing about the name Czechia is that Americans no longer call it "Czechoslavia". I heard them refer to it in this manner a few times when I lived in California in the eighties.
i consider it a big achievement if they even know about Czechoslovakia and have some weird feeling it is in Europe and not somewhere in Africa. it is well known americans dont care much about geography outside the US. I saw videos where they point on Australia and think it is Iraq. no offence to you dream prague,i am just a realist and i appreciate your knowledge and willingness to learn even more. you are an example for others
Of course they called the country Czechoslovakia in the eighties. What else would they call it at that time? Nowadays I hear some English speakers calling it Czecho. Just simply dividing the word Czechoslovakia into two.

Story time: I am Slovak. As a uni IT student I was invited by Huawei to come to their headquarters in Shenzhen, China to take a look at some of their cellphone tower tech and to learn about China. It was a 2 week course, for them it was publicity. I came along with other Slovak uni students as well as Czechs and other nationalities. At the opening presentation the speaker said something like "So we have people from 3 countries, Brunei, Malaysia and Czechoslovakia" :D all of us were like bruhh. We corrected her, it's fine. But it seems like all of the people who took care of us got the same memo - that Czechoslovaks are coming - because everybody who we interacted with from Huawei we had to correct. Pretty sad when a multi-billion dollar company is 2 decades behind with it's geography homework.
Dude that is kind of sad. I want to say where I am in the states most people would say Czech Republic at a minimum, even if they eschew the short name of Czechia-and Slovakia is a no brainer. Only time I’ve used Czechoslovakia outside of talking about the historical state and Prague Spring was when my friends mom told me her family was from Czechoslovakia when it actually existed.
Btw. in other languages they use short names. I have learned the German language and Russian language. In German the short version is Tschechien (pronounced as "čechien" ; long version is Tschechische republik, the long name is used only in official occasions, in maps etc. Germans use the short name. And there is also other short name "Tschechei", but it is little bit pejorative) and in Russian it is Чехия (Čechija) and i have never encountered the long name which is Чешская Республика...
Although Germans had used “Tschechei” before the Nazi period, Czechia had been used many years before Germans first used “Tschechei”. Today, “Tschechei” is rarely used in Germany because most Germans use „Tschechien“. If “Tschechei” is used it does not need to be necessarily viewed as a pejorative term since it was created in a similar way as names for other countries in German, such as Slowakei and Türkei.
That's the dig deep we are used to see at your videos. I have even doubts that everybody in CZ knows all of these details. Job well done ... And your embodiment of czech office worker - like feminist fighter - is just amazing ... Thumbs up.
Great, thanks! I'm representing this country in some international organizations and yes (being 40+) I have some problems myself to accomodate the one-word name. I'm not used to it much, must take control over what I'm saying but I'm trying my best in non-official discussions to refer to "Czechia". It's sometimes hard for the foreigners, too, but they're getting more acquainted with it and not much troubled by using it. So yes, Czechia is fine and no need to refer to the "republic" everytime you mention your homecountry :-)
Jen, PLEASE forgive me for fueling any of the name debate a while back, because I saw, when I was in the CZ back in March how a lot of locals felt about the new short name vs the long-standing long name...I'm jst hoping the borders and my school opens up in Praha, so that I can go attend school there, get my TEFL and my visa, and throw down some roots in Praha (maybe by September or October?) Hilarious, full of information, and well put together video! Your acting is awesome! I’m always looking forward to Wednesdays thanks to you! (Personally I never liked the name Czechia, but after this explanation I finally understand why it’s a thing) thank you!
I didn’t like it because the rest of the world finally slowly started to realize that there is a country somewhere out there called the Czech Republic. And at that moment of enlightenment we decided to change the name again. But I like the fact that the name finally fits on a map, that it truly includes all three regions within, and that we can now cheer with the rhythm! 😂( u have no idea how much I enjoy your humor!)
I hated 'Czechia' at first but then I just stopped caring that much and now I actually quite like the name. People just didn't like it because we weren't used to it but most will get over it ...eventually.
I hate both "Czechia" and "Česko" and I don't think that will pass. It's inaccurate name that was forced on people by politicians like Zeman, without any wider discussion. It feels like it was another of those decisions that was made about us but without us.

Hello, at first I was more the Czech Republic fan. When the "Czechia" era started it was represented by media as "change of the name of our state!" and I think this was the main problem which made people to hate this name. No one (like prime minister/ government/ president etc.) told us, that this should be only our "nickname", well at least no officially and clearly. After seeing your video I already understand to this topic and agree with the Czechia name :) let´s spread it! Thank you, you are studnice vědění :) and of course love your sense of humour :)
Hi Handy Moon, thank you for the nice comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I would have been irritated if they wanted to change the name too! But I like the "nickname" ☺
It is not a "nickname" but rather a geographical, timeless and politically neutral name of the old country where the Czech Republic was established recently. It is not a neologism but a word used at least from the 19th century, rarely from the baroque period. However, the word was used mainly by educated people, that is the main problem. To simple people with poor vocabulary, the word was not even familiar. Czech geographers standardized the word long before the tabloid media announced a "change of country name".
@@breznik1197 thank you for this information. Yes, that was fault. I mean my comment for the present time, when there was a big wave of criticism of the "Czechia" name.
Wow, fantastic! You're brilliant. I don't even know what's the official foreign name of our country :-) Accurate , funny and smart explanation of the name of our state! :-) Frankly, I prefer the Czech Republic more than Czechia, it comes more naturally to me and it's also closer to my heart. Thanks for your great lesson!
Funny, how I wanted to write an experience from my Erasmus about using these terms when speeking about my country, and someone actually commented about this issue before me :D I prefer using The Czech Republic when mentioning it for the first time, but when the conversation demands repeating the country's name, it's much easier to use Czechia. What actually bothers me way more is when Bohemians or Slovaks use Čechy for the whole country. I am a Moravian, so it's nice when people address the place where I live properly...

Wonderful video. Its great that you put so much effort in understanding Czech culture including this confusing "issue". And thank you for educating people. :-)
Me and a small group of Americans expats mostly EFL teachers, businessmen and missionaries were pushing through the term “Czechia” as long ago as back in early nineties and finally it’s catching up. It took a long time for Czechs to finally begin accepting it.
I am as a CZE inhabitant really astonished what you said in this video. As a proud czech man I agree with Czechia, almost same as Chechnya. We are, as a nation, full of proud ppl, who have many questions and no answers. :D So lets put it like this. Czechia helped us to get known in media, internet and everything, cause we are THE CZECH REPUBLIC, in which we are so proud of, doesnt help at all. That means for global meaning - CZECHIA wins. It is new, but you showed us very well in the video, how it is. As a man from "Česko" I do not give a damn about moravia and slezia. Still Czechs... And you did a great job, picked a great topic and you know more than the czechia inhabitants! Subscribed. :)
Thank you for this funny and clever video. I was born in Czechoslovakia, live in Czechia and have my family roots in Slovakia. We are a litlle bit confused, when Americans arriving to our country and called our country Czechoslovakia, but honestly, who Czechs know where is Kansas? And who´s from Czechia still using name Yugoslavia? And last but not least, great acting!
Greetings. This is because after 1989 we had the desire to make it clear to the world that we proudly are no longer a "soviet protectorate". That we are an independent state. Our own republic. And it was wild! 29. března 1990 - Československá, federativní republika. 23. dubna 1990 Česká a Slovenská Federativní Republika. (March 29, 1990 - Czechoslovak Federal Republic. April 23, 1990 Czech and Slovak Federal Republic.) We had a chance to decide for ourselves, so we enjoyed it! The name "Czechia" is used mainly by the younger generation. Of course. But the younger generation is also more active on the Internet (in general) and this ensures dissemination. In my opinion, it's really "just" a question of habit. "Just." is in quotes, because Czechs literally love customs and traditions... Or at least they loved. I am one of those people who was very upset by the name "Czechia". It really pissed me off. Always! But the more this name is used, the more I get used to it. It definitely doesn't bother me anymore, and after watching your video, I'm aware of the "outside" opinion too. So... if it has to be "Czechia" be it Czechia... ;)
Also in Ireland we say “Republic of Ireland” a lot, as we are only a republic with 100 years, very proud of it & HATE being mistaken for the U.K / Brits 😒
"The name "Czechia" is used mainly by the younger generation?" I don't think so. "Czechia" is used also by older and acquainted people who know that the history of the Czech Republic is very short, younger than history of Czechia itself. Only young uneducated people are able to say thoughtlessly that Masaryk was a president of the Czech Republic. Older people remember the times when Czechia existed (within various political forms and unions), but the Czech Republic has not yet. How could they call the Czech part of Czechoslovakia before its federalization? Of course, I mean those who were able to distinguish Bohemia from the whole Czechia.
Jen, you nailed it again, I’m really glad I subscribe your channel to understand more about Czechia even I was born there. From today, gonna use your explanation for everyone! Thanks 😊
After five years studying geography at Charles University I've just gotten so used to using Česko/Czechia that I hardly even say the long name anymore. The best thing..the short version makes life of every cartographer easier since it fits (almost) every map :-)

The amount of work, humor and educational topic you put in your videos is extraordinary.. You can call us whatever you want - you ARE one of us already :)
As a Czech geography student, I'm glad you're using the word Czechia :) I really don't know why this name isn't accepted by most of our population and politicians. etc. And your explanation of the difference between geographical and political names was made very well - I think it could be used in geography lessons in Czech schools.
Because the origin of this name is bullshit. There is no problem with short name. There is a problem with the word which was chosen to be used as a short name.
@@MyYTwatcher What exactly is wrong with the origin of the name? Name Czechia is made by the same logic as name Slovakia, Austria, Bulgaria, and so on.
I think one of the problems is that Czechia sounds much closer to Čechy (so only Bohemia) and not Česko(short for the whole Czech republic) and the other is that everybody got used to calling it Czech republic (if u dont use the THE its much easier to shout it at a hockey match)

A great video. Perfect arguments. I was very grateful for the name Czechia. In fact, I had often tried to avoid using the Czech Republic when speaking to foreigners, it did feel really awkward in some situations. I usually replaced it with MY COUNTRY. Czechia is much easier to use.
i used to say simply čechy even in fully english conversations. but it feels good to switch it to czechia knowing that it's actual english word.

Wow, I didn't know the whole story around the name "Czechia", it just made me feel (yet again) embarassed about the Czech politics and their lack of commitment! When it first came out, I remember furious people on social media mocking the name, but I was secretly really grateful for it. As a Czech living abroad I feel your pain when talking about T H E C Z E C H R E P U B L I C, how awkward and clumsy it sounds, especially during a longer chat about the country :D But at the same time, I never felt confident enough to just use "Czechia" as I thought people will be confused by that and it'll be too weird if I suddenly change the name of the country I often talk about. But! From now on, I will try my best and use "Czechia" whenever possible to help people get used to it (and to make my life soooo much easier when talking about my country of origin :D)
What a great video!! I’m here because I was looking at my Apple Maps to help my 6th grader come up with a list of 30 interesting countries. I was surprised that The Czech Republic was labeled as Czechia. I wondered if it had been renamed! This video was so well done and explained it so well. She kept me interested for the whole 13 minutes! And I love all her country characters! Thank you for such a fun, informative video that taught me all about Czechia!! As a side note, I was able to visit Prague in 2001 and loved it! What a beautiful city and beautiful country!
So I was looking at the map on Google for some reason and I saw Czechia nearby...I thought to myself, "Isn't that the Czech Republic?" So I then did some research and ended on this video. This was highly informative and well put! Props to you for putting in all the hard work throughout 🙌🙌

Czechia is the same name for Czech area as German name "Tschechai" used by Reinhard Heydrich, German killer of Czech nation. That's the reason I hate this name!!

If someone did not hear about Czechia before the Nazis started talking about it, it would be more of a problem of education and acquaintance.

As a person who likes geography, I got curious about the differnce about Czechia and the Czech Republic, and this was a great video that explained things very easily and entertainingly! Thank you so much :)

Naprosto skvělé, díky! Velmi dobře jste to shrnula.
Moc pěkný. Díky těším se na každý nový díl.

Gratuluju 👍😄
Some Czechs hate word Česko for no reason. These experts would rather call this country: St. Republic. :D
Neřekl bych, že Česko je "new Czech name of our country".
@@pavelnovy491 well, you are certainly helping things by calling people stupid. What would the people in The States think if their government told them to go and call their country West Indies. And some zealots would paint the critics as stupid then.

I love your allusions on czecho-slovak flag "issues" 😄 you are hitting it right. Greetings from Slovakia!
Btw. in other languages they use short names.

I hate both "Czechia" and "Česko" and I don't think that will pass. It's inaccurate name that was forced on people by politicians like Zeman, without any wider discussion. It feels like it was another of those decisions that was made about us but without us.
@@mrkv4k nonsense, our experts decided about it in 1993. cuzk.cz/Zivotni-situace/Poradci-a-poradni-organy/Nazvoslovna-komise-CUZK/Nazvoslovna-komise-CUZK.aspx
@@sulista-consulting "nonsense" huh? That doesn't really change anything I wrote...
LOL .. I don't know why your "France" made me laugh so hard. You are so fantastic! This entire video was so well done (as always). I feel like I really learned something today.
JEN THIS IS EPIC AND YOU'RE HILARIOUS! Also way to make learning things super fun! And also that map treatment at the beginning WOW!
In Russian the Czech Republic was always called Чехия - Czechia
Yes, Čechy should only be used for Bohemia and not for the whole nation. It´s ignorance on the side of the Czechs or Slovaks who say it.
Exactly!
This is why we needs Czechia. We cannot call Germany as Bavaria or Sachsen.
Thanks for that, you are a trend-setter!
Subscribed. :)
I like Czechia. Besides, it has history. The name goes way back. So yeah it's a good name. Czechia.
So... if it has to be "Czechia" be it Czechia... ;)
Thank you for your thoughts! I think you represent a lot of opinions out there ;)
Also in Ireland we say “Republic of Ireland” a lot, as we are only a republic with 100 years, very proud of it & HATE being mistaken for the U.K / Brits 😒
I love your sense for details. The profiles of countries. Love it. ❤️
Tolik prace,jaka priprava, respekt! 👍
Jen, you nailed it again, I’m really glad I subscribe your channel to understand more about Czechia even I was born there. From today, gonna use your explanation for everyone! Thanks 😊
I like Czechia. The Czech Republic is really clumsy, especially in casual speech.
Hi Jen. I really love your channel. My English is much more better because of watching your channel. Thank you.
After five years studying geography at Charles University I've just gotten so used to using Česko/Czechia that I hardly even say the long name anymore. The best thing..the short version makes life of every cartographer easier since it fits (almost) every map :-)
Předpokládám, že alespoň Bangkoku říkáte plným oficiálním jménem "Krung Thep Maha Nakhon Amorn Rattanakosindra Mahindrayutthaya Mahadilokpop Noparattana Radchhani Burirom Udom Rachnivet Mahastan Amorn Pimarn Avatarn Satit Sakututtiya Vishnukarm Prasit", tedy "Město andělů, velké město, věčné a nádherné sídlo hinduistického boha Indry, vznešené město, kde je uloženo devět skvostných drahokamů (diamant, rubín, smaragd, žlutý safír, granát, modrý safír, měsíční kámen, zirkon, kočičí oko), královské město s mnoha velkolepými paláci a stavbami, věčné město, kde sídlí bohové a má svůj domov hinduistický bůh Krišna, město stvořené bohem Višnou." Českorepublikánům se musí líbit i oficiální názvy typu "Velká libyjská arabská lidová socialistická džamáhíríje".
Omg skvělé video, vaše videa mě moc baví(viděla jsem sice jen 2)skvele připravená fakta
Thanks to you I’ll use Czechia. And let folks in Prague know my U.S. state of Oregon is pronounced “Ory-gun.”
Velký LIKE.

The amount of work, humor and educational topic you put in your videos is extraordinary.. You can call us whatever you want - you ARE one of us already :)
Perfect video! I think you will make a lot of people start using Czechia in English from now on.
Thank you so much for this video, the world jrs. had me confused for this.
I prefer Czechia cuz on google maps it's shown in this way (at least in Italy)
This little animation with the flag is just so lovely :D And twitter comment just made me smile. I do like your content and humour.
As a Czech geography student, I'm glad you're using the word Czechia :) I really don't know why this name isn't accepted by most of our population and politicians. etc. And your explanation of the difference between geographical and political names was made very well - I think it could be used in geography lessons in Czech schools.
Exactly man, the logic behind it is absolutely clear. Goes to show not many folks are used to use common sense. ;)
@@tomaszavadil2106 From linguistical point of view yes. Factically considering history - it is wrong.
