      I cannot agree with this more. Now its just small videos unless you are a paid subscriber (20 dollars a month, at that.. come on). I get that you only have so much time in a day, and that he has another business now, but the old ways were the best. Especially now with ben no longer having to really run the company, he has more time to spend building stuff, and yet if you want to see that, you have to either wait forever, or pay for the privilege.
      Personally, I dont have that kind of money spare, and its frankly insulting that crimson has joined the never ending stream of youtubers that have decided to become a freemium content creator, paywalling the interesting stuff away for those that can afford it.

    • @HellcatCustoms
      @HellcatCustoms 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The income potential via Patreon was probably a top factor in Ben deciding to do TH-cam full time. I agree it's unfortunate if you can't afford to be a Patron. I certainly don't have an extra $20 a month with the high cost of adulting.

    Flipping one of the bookmatched halves whilst planing edges compensates for plumb variation. If anyone asks, was the traditional technique of Glumori Angelli the master jointer of traditional Italian designer firewood.

    The thickness of the nut of the truss rod is two factors the first being it is more than likely it is a bit beefier to keep the tool from ripping out or mushrooming the inside hex, yes I've seen this happen when a nut is too thin and hardened steel Allen wrenches will kill it very quickly. The second factor is that it is chrome coated and that added to its hardness, thickness and cosmetic looks. Honestly, if that is a chrome coated nut then that is a well made truss rod and was not made in China.
    That is a really cool trick with the super glue and tape, and will certainly be using it. Thanks.

    Watching you work gave me an idea. I just thought of a neat trick on how to clamp the figured top to the body. Drill several holes around the template edge, then, using a single rope, you can tie the rope and you get lots of clamping pressure, without damaging your template. Plus, depending on how many wraps/holes you drill, you will get better distribution of pressure. Plus you wont need a bunch of clamps, which in the spirit of doing things simpler with less tools, works out swimmingly.

    A shed - people need a Luthier's Shed. That way you don't have trouble with significant others, you don't have to go mad cleaning or vacuuming the floor. and your tools are always to hand where you put them. Also always looks good and sounds good when you hear a lot of noise coming from a shed whilst a build is in progress.

    Iff you have complementary angles for both pieces of wood, even if it's not exactly 90 degrees, then they will fit together. What this means is that one piece needs to be done upside down and the other right side up.

    • @jonmad206
      @jonmad206 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Defeats the purpose of book matching the top if you do this! It is much better to take a bit of extra time to get the grain patterns to match up.

    • @twocsies
      @twocsies 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jon Adams The angle of the join is irrelevant to the book join. The join is perpendicular to the visible surface and out of sight. The book matching is ruined if the joint doesn't fit right, not if the angles are complementary.

    Does anyone know if when he routed the truss rod seat, he added a deeper dip in the middle? I’ve read a lot of instructions on Truss rod installation and in most every single one The routing is dipped, although I’ve seen a few where that is not the case and I am still confused as to how the truss rod would work. Thank you for any clearance on this in advance. Rock on!

    • @mouthfulacoque3580

      common sense says dip your truss rod cavity anyway because it is meant to correct lateral warping. try to use a calculator to determine the depth of the parabola if forums are not providing fact based evidence.

    Actually you don't need your plane blade to be at a perfect 90 deg angle. If you lay one of the pieces on one side and the second piece on it's opposite side the angles will cancel and you'll have a perfectly flat top.
    Also for securing the template you could just use your tape technique? Seems obvious so I'm wondering if there is a reason you don't as you are effectively doing when planing the top.

    Trussrod - Musicman has done something unique - they put the truss rod adjustment on the body of the guitar, with a spin adjustment. No truss rod cover on the neck of the guitar, no hole in the neck of the guitar, stronger neck for the guitar. Are there downsides to this setup versus the traditional truss rod instalation?

    • @petecarpenter9414

    I'm a bit confused by planing before gluing. Everything I've ever heard about gluing (and painting for that matter) says you need to have a rough surface for the glue to stick to. Not questioning your method, just curious why you do it this way? What am I missing?

    • @Reign_In_Blood_963
      @Reign_In_Blood_963 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wood is porous, so you don't need to rough up the surface as opposed to metal. The planing is to get the mating surfaces as flat as possible, which improves the glue bond and creates join that is nearly invisible to sight and tone.

  • @teemumyyrylainen9247

    Im planing to start building my first guitar body soon. Still need to wait wood to dry few more weeks. I want to do T type guitar mainly due amount of wood i have to use. But im running in my first issue with planing the neck. I have no clue about how i should shape it , ... i could allways copy my other guitar ( Cort KX1Q ) but id like to have 22 fret guitar instead of 24 and little shorter scale lenght , so my dauther could play it aswell. I am one of those guyz who want to learn to do stuff them selfs, but i allso would like this to go right on first try. So that leads into my question , what do i need to take into account when im shaping the neck and headpiece to get an good working guitar with good sustain and good tuning ability ? I will go on and watch these vids and many more before i start sketching while the wood dries some more ( its allready 50+ years old, but been on moist cellar for few months before i toke it inside to dry (again) more. )

    You can buy a brand new guitar, or a fairly decent used one, for less than the cost of a number 7 jointing plane, even an old one.
    yes I know that's not the point, but 'just sayin'..
    Also wouldn't it be much easier to just use a single solid piece of wood instead of book matching and laminating a top onto a separate body?

      "Also wouldn't it be much easier to just use a single solid piece of wood instead of book matching and laminating a top onto a separate body"?
      Yes, but a bookmatched top is such a beautiful thing, and a solid piece will rarely give the grain variations.
