- Hey everyone, welcome aboard the flagship of Indonesia: the Garuda Indonesia B777-300ER.
Garuda Indonesia has recently started flights to Doha and code shares with Qatar Airways, so when I had to go to Jakarta from Dubai it was an easy choice to take this flight!
It was my first time on the Garuda Indonesia B777-300ER. As a Skytrax 5 Star Airline I had very high expectations once I boarded but that were not really met.. Specially not when the flight is operated in partnership with Qatar Airways.
So this video shows you why you should not trust rating agencies!
But at the same time I enjoyed the experience very much. I continue to love aviation as is and there have to be different airlines and services in the air, so this video is my tribute to Garuda Indonesia and the subscribers from there.

This is more than criticizing and having the right to do it, THis was shoddy service and negligence. IT is like when you plaster the whole plane with your badges of honor, you get yourself off the hook.

one of best part of Garuda Indonesia is the landing time… mostly smooth landing..
I lost all faith in Skytrax when they gave Lufthansa a 5-star rating for their Allegris “concept”. I wouldn’t be surprised if Skytrax gave Lufthansa a 6-star rating for their non-allegris business class on their A380s. Regardless, I still think OTHH is a solid airport but not the best. As a regular user of Garuda, I think it’s a solid airline but not 5-star or better than Emirates or Turkish. However, a 9-abreast 777 helps make Garuda stand out.

Based by your review, i agree that Garuda must improve their service. Corruption and covid make Garuda almost hit a bankruptcy, so Garuda not a "pride of Indonesian" anymore for me. I'm agree with you that Garuda must be "more Indonesian airline" by serving Indonesian food in economy, giving a clean cutleries, and improving their IFE's. Their IFE was so mediocre. I hope Garuda will be fly higher someday

Wow! Finally on Garuda Indonesia. Personal experience: food was good, service was excellent friendliness and courteous (hard to get these days), AC was freezing. Only unpleasant IFE. Limited choice of movies and they were outdated movies too. Even the Indonesian movies. Definitely not a choice for a medium or long haul flight. Short one is bearable. Since there wasnt entertainment and forced to do soul-searching instead 😂

Our last trip on Garuda Indonesia was some years ago returning from Jakarta to Perth. Fully Indonesian, good cabin crew, good flight. There was a tropical cyclone off the northwest coast and the captain flew further east than he otherwise would to avoid the turbulence. 👍🏼

Great review! I flew on Garuda's A330-900 and it surely is a step up from the B777. I can't wait to upload my video of it and I fully agree with your verdict that there is room for improvement for the IFE but their staff are the greatest asset.
Yeah, the A339neo and that "kembara nusantara" one be the only few planes that have UPDATED IFEs....I guess it depends on luck😂😂😂😂
Interesting, seems Garuda is good in economy, their staff usually are their biggest assets.
I had the pleasure of flying their discontinued route from London to Jakarta in 2018, in Business, very good ! And at the time THE longest flight from Heathrow to anywhere!

Garuda has a fantastic soft product, which is the crew. But they need an overhaul with their hard product and route network to compete better with their regional peers. Otherwise, they will just be more of a regional airline.
Agreed but the issues with Garuda lies deep in the company with issues like financial issues, issues with last flight routes especially the missuse of the cgk-lhr routes with stops in Singapore and Medan. But now at least they are restructuring the company.

I totally agree with you on the Indonesia flavor. I my self did wet leases for them with my previous airline back in the 90s. But I think the meal service was so so to me. The whole cutlery dirty would make me not eat 😅

Brave move by Garuda to open up this route, wonder if the plane was filled up with more than 50% of the seats, as you know that Garuda currently is struggling on their economy right now.

Yeah garuda is a perfect representation of our country. Nice people (soft product) but corrupt governmeny (management). I flew their flagship 777 (the one they used for Amsterdam flights) on a short hop ftom Denpasar to Jakarta and it felt really outdated. The IFE is untrsponsive and the outlet under the seat was dangling. Garuda has refreshed some of their aircraft but they havent refreshed the main thing i dislike about them. The 2000s style IFE. Garuda is also awfully expensive for some reason and I don't see why anyone would fly it long haul
I flew from DPS to CGK in 2022 with same aircraft, the service was standard as well as inflight meal.

Garuda in future will be mostly Asia Pacific airlines. This is why they choose Doha, Dubai and from what I heard soon could be Istanbul. They want to use their cooperation with QR, Emirates and Turkish to connect their customers to Euro destinations.
Amsterdam seems will going to be the only Euro destination they will keep. They already ditch London and not proceed with plan to Frankfurt.
They are also seems not want to reopen LA, which's why their biggest wide bodies is A330-300 and A330-900. They are slowly retiring their A330-200 and seems try to find way to cancell their A330-800 order. There's talk that they want to change their 777-300ER with 787-10.
All shown indication that they will focus on 7-9 hrs top Asia Pacific routes.

The entertainment package on their A330 Neo is much better. At par with regional competitors. Shown in my opinion those 777-300 are not being kept for longer time.
I thought they will buying A350 instead B787
@fdllimrn they put contract for both 787 and A350. However the corruption of previous management and covid hold the deal. Seems now they are switching A350 to A330 Neo and 787 could be reignite again. This so far as present management wants to focus on domestic and Asia Pacific mostly.
A350 plan before for Euro and North America routes. A330 Neo more suitable if they realignment more to Asia Pacific routes.
great video! as frequent flyer of garuda I do agree that they need to implement more of "indonesian" elements on their flight. to me they're lacking in every aspect. except the cabin crew, their service is stellar and the most memorable one to me when the cabin crew kneeling down to take meal order in economy class! that was something I never seen before.
Out of curiosity, how do you identify planes and their destination on ground? that is something that sets you apart from the others.

Beautiful Review ! The Spaniards would have known during booking that the DOH-CGK degment is operated by Garuda. Sad about the incomplete and dirty cutlery. Also surprising that an Indonesian option was not offered in the meals. Did you get an amenity kit ? Thanks for a beautiful and detailed review !

That’s almost gone!! It drives ticket prices down and adds revenue up when you add that extra row, but it requires a big investment. SQ is also one of the few to stick with 3-3-3
Thanks for the video, Alex. I also prefer the bus. The landing lights also indicate the sterile cockpit period. Once turned on during the descent, the crew should only discuss matters essential to the flight operation. Similarly, non-essential conversation is prohibited until the landing lights are turned off at or above FL 100. Dirty cutlery? What a turn-off!
Lovely trip report. That's a very empty flight, which means extra comfort. The old cabin had made your experience a bit lower than your expectation. Nevertheless, I'd still love to be on their B777-300ER.

I don't know what agreement between GA and QR for this route but i think GA brave open this not prospect route because QR help for the seat occupation with their codeshare agreement. And seem if you wanna lay your body on the three seat all over the flight prefer fly with GA because it is not full of pax.

A little fun fact that most of the seat in this flight is sold by qatar airways i think garuda is only selling 1/3 of the seat, the rest is for QR passengers
I think GA had even less of those seats for sale, because I checked on both websites what to get.
At least Garuda didn't ground and inspection some aircraft due to lack of technician like the MH 😂

I have some flights filmed on the A320 but not Business, don’t really like it.
Im not surprised the Spaniards were annoyed, I always think it should be far clearer if you aren't flying on the Airline you booked with regardless of if its a code share. And whilst Garuda may have improved they haven't exactly got the best reputation safety wise in Europe
I’m quite sure it does say “operated by Garuda Indonesia”. Their whole case was pointless, but I found it entertaining to listen to as I’m Spanish myself 😂
@@TheLayoverAviation People who work in aviation or others like ourselves who are passionate about aviation know that this is something that happens and will look for it. I know a number of people who have been caught out by this, like I said I think it should be far clearer. It's particularly bad in the UK for charter flights with both TUI and Jet2 wetleasing crews/aircraft

Fantastic video! I am commenting after quite some time. Do you remember me? GA is actually quite disappointing as I know how hospitable Indonesians from my visit there. However, it does not matter whether the airline has 1* or 5* rating as Skytrax cannot be trusted. In no way is GA better than EK or DOH better than SIN. Emirates just revealed its new B777 Business Class, which seems quite disappointing. What do you think of it?

Indonesians are some of the nicest people and I love the service I always receive there. But yes, Skytrax is a joke. I agree with your opinions.
Regarding Emirates, I have two opinions.. yes, they could have done something completely new but they went for consistency which is VERY important.
So if you fly the A380 or B777, the product in all cabins will be the same (except for the lounge and showers..)
If they had a premium product on some B777 but not all it would be very unfair for people that pay a premium to fly Emirates but don’t get what they expect. I have that issue with QR whenever my A350 gets swapped for an A330 or A320… It’s very frustrating..
But I was told the B777-9X will have enclosable suites and a lounge 😉

8:19 That depends on where you sit and what runway you takeoff from. If you sat on the port side, you would see the Doha skyline. Other than that, it gets boring
True, but you can’t always get the perfect side, I always do my best to book the perfect seat and then the runways change and I’ve got the worst views 😬
This goes to show you that although it aint a bad thing to as you said try something exotic for a change, but if you want peace of mind, go with what you know and sth that has been tried and proven to be true.

No Hospitality industry entity in the world lives up to the number of stars it gets and they always come up short
2022, 2023, 2024 and maybe 2025 is very tough year for Garuda ; they have low in asset and almost no cash also everytime they going make a flight before and after or in between they (Garuda) is losing money every second. So they make every possible saving from this and that for Garuda to survive. Some said "only crazy people takes on Garuda CEO at these condition", because they have to minimalizing expenditure until overall they make a profit or at least they can paid the plane renting.
12:21 in cultures like the Middle East or East Asia, knifes are rather unusual. In Iranian cuisine you barely see knifes and yes it it possible to cut meals with spoons and forks :D. Besides that, I would have reported that to a stewardess because this is not the way a customer should be treated

Yeah, you’re right about reporting this to the crew, but sometimes I just don’t care. See, planes are amongst the most dirty things on earth anyway.. The toilets, seats, seatbelts, tables, all! It’s just impossible to properly clean between flights. So one little cutlery isn’t really my real problem 😂

Garuda as other airliners has suffer from covid on top of their already bleeded balance sheet.. still in southeast asia garuda only below SQ, being PR the lowest then VN, TQ and MH is so so based on my personal experience in the last 3-4 years flying with them all.. even CX is really suck these days

We hebben Thailand van Noord tot Zuid en middenin bijna 18 keer bezocht. Bali zullen we in november voor de vierde keer bezoeken. Echter schat ik de Thaise keuken veel hoger in dan die van Indonesie, Bali. Het moet gezegd de Balinese keuken is ook heel njammie 🥲
En ja je zou toch meer Indonesiche gerechten willen zien. Weet zelf niet wat couscous te maken heeft met je Thaise schotel.

Mijn Spaans is onbestaande al heb ik sinds twee jaar een Mexicaanse schoondochter 😁In Thailand wonen is iets anders dan op vakantie gaan. We hebben wel vrienden die in Bangkok en Chang Rai wonen maar zelf de stap zetten als je kleinkinderen hebt is mogelijk maar niet evident, je moet altijd met twee zijn die zo'n stap willen zetten. Pensioen dat heb ik gelukkig al enkele jaren. Ik probeer alleen commentaar te geven als ik denk dat het zinvol is, je vlog zie ik elke keer

I have a doubt. How do you know the information of the aircraft on the ground? Flightradar24 doesn't show info about the plane, once the pilot switches off the transponder.
Old livery, IFE also not responsive. I have tried once from cgk to doh. Cabin crew only friendly with passanger looks rich and europian
The IFE software and its features looks like 10-15 older. Last time I flew with Garuda was in 2020 and IFE was just the same like it was in 2013.
And about the breakfast......routes to SE Asia (especially Indonesia) with its own flag carrier and they only serves omelette and pancake? No way!!!as an Indonesian I feel sorry for watching that. As I experienced on QR or even SV flights, they will serve rice based meal as Indonesians are very fond of rice....
Then about the serving of Indonesian meal....they should introduce more like in the past. Even at 2013-2014 on every international short (more than 60 min), medium, and long haul international flight they will offer Indonesian food. When I flew with GA to KUL in 2013 they offered Indonesian-style nasi goreng. They also offered the concept of rijstaffel with some of Indonesian dishes at business class which somehow discontinued
Hopefully GA will improve better after these annus horriblis....I really want to experience their long haul products
*Big fans of GA, but currently prefers QR, TK, EY, WY, or even SV when flying from Türkiye to Indonesia and domestically prefers Batik Air or Citilink (although the latter is subsidiary of GA)

GA international destinations are rather limited. Apart from their hard products which also show their age. No wonder many Indonesians consider SQ as their unofficial airline!
