Something not mentioned is that Jeff is married to Charlotte Cathey from the Go-Gos, and Steve is married to Anna Waroneker from That Dog.
Those family BBQs must be rockin'...

Sophia Coppola was Steve McDonald's girlfriend at the time of Third Eye. Shonen Knife is a song about the Japanese band.

JFA is from Phoenix... And Steve McDonald is lead vocals on Standing In Front of Poseur....

    • @EveryAlbumEver
      @EveryAlbumEver  ปีที่แล้ว +7

Of course that's Steve. Damn. Well, that proves we can't tell the difference between women and children. I remembered JFA were from AZ while editing the episode, but they were a big part of SoCal punk, so the point is still relevant.

Just ordered Third Eye and Alex reminded me that I have not checked out Off! “Free LSD” yet. So I picked that up too.

I am a HUGE RK fan from the late 80s. Neurotica is a masterpiece that they were never ever to replicate in terms of artistic importance. About 5 years ago I was walking thru a casino in Vegas and heard a familiar tune being piped in over the house PA. It was Love is You from Neurotica. Blew my mind that a song from so long ago that never had major radio airplay got picked to be in the rotation. Makes me wonder if it was a casino pick or something a paid service provided.
Also, RK is one of the FUNNEST band to see live. I've seen them about a dozen times over the years. Jeff and Steve are punk rock royalty and cut from the same cloth as The Dickies when it comes to sense of humor and influences (both bands covered Pretty Please Me by LA pop legends The Quick). For at least a few years, Melvins and Redd Kross took turns headlining NYE shows in SF & LA, respectively.

Oh guys. So much missed!! Regardless, No One like You from BTD is written by Steve and his wife Anna and is about how much he loves his son! He is singing, not Jeff. Jone Hoople co-written by the Muff's Kim Shattuck (RIP :( ) is SUCH a great song. Anyway I won't go on bc you are obviously not massive fans, but there is so much missed opportunity in this pod. Anyway, thanks for doing it, but yeah.

We do this every week with a different band. Sometimes the point of the podcast is the perspective of a new listener to the band. We may not have always comprehensive history, it’s why we listen to all the albums, because ultimately it’s about the music.

Phaseshifter is the one that hooked me. I loved the swagger of Follow the Leader on Show World. The entire Researching The Blues album is great. I could never warm up to Beyond the Door. The new double album is fantastic!

Graduated high school in 1979. The first single Annette's Got the Hits ruled the South Bay cool kids that year. They played everywhere. The Dancing Waters San Pedro with Saccharine Trust was epic.

I disagree with two things Mike said:
    1. I think 'Heaven Only Knows' is awesome.
    2. I think Researching The Blues is awesome. I like it more than Beyond the Door.
But from what I've heard, this upcoming double album will blow both of them away.
For the record, Neurotica is my favorite.

I agree about Lost In Translation. It's not terrible, but it's basically Catcher in the Rye with added Japanese exoticism.

Alex dude has bad taste. If you ain’t hip to Redd Kross….can’t really be trusted. These lunkheads who think The Melvins invented heavy ( I love the Melvins too), but come on man. Listen to something besides Mastodon/Big Business and all the stoner rock Melvins rip offs. Which is basically Sabbath….Other dude knows what’s up.

Steve McDonald is an absolute monster and I'm glad I heard of him via the Melvins. Thank you for bringing this band to my attention in depth, love this show, it's replaced a lot of the conversations I used to have with friends that have left us.
Still waiting for that Burzum episode :P (I can't remember which of you said you'd tackle it solo when I mentioned in the comments before >.< I imagine it's very low priority.)
I understand there's a queue via patreon but bands I'd love to see; Meshuggah, Lamb of God, In Flames, At the Gates* and Aesop Rock :D
*as they sadly fall off but i'd love to hear some of the upside you can find in their later work.
Edit: 39 mins - agreed, Idles are fucking killer, finally got all of their albums on vinyl today by completing the collection with Ultra Mono! :D Crawler really dragged me out of a dark place.

I love Lamb of God and Aesop Rock. I think In Flames catalog may have gotten a little too beefy but I loved them when I was in high school and in my early 20s. At the Gates would be a rad episode.

Thing is...Redd Kross is one of the greatest bands ever, but I don't dig the Melvins...why?? The Melvins have like zero melody...Buzz Osborne is a helluva cool nice guy though...while RK are the ultimate mix of catchy powerpop, bubblegum, punk, psychedelia & pop culture kitsch...it's odd they are linked cuz they seem to be musical opposites...I want to like the Melvins, I know Kurt Cobain was a Melvins fanatic, saw em live on the tour in 2019 they did with Redd Kross, and I really tried, but they are just not my thing...zero melodies, hooks, powerpop goodness...sorry...

Hi. Would you be able to do an episode covering Eric's Trip, covering their singles, EPs, and LPs? Would love to see an episode on them.
I've also created a web s ite devoted to the band (live guide/studio sessions and interview guide) if needed for supplementary video information!) - on my channel in the ""About" section!

I could understand why someone that fell in love with the teenaged punk band in 1980 might dismiss RTB. But you guys don't get the transcendent glory of "Stay Away From Downtown" and that makes me sad.

Nothing more painful than someone who seemingly knows nothing, bad mouthing Redd Kross. I guess thats Redd Kross' curse, people just not getting it(them). Might be best Not to pontificate about a band that you just know nothing about, and then say they sound like The Vines 🤦‍♂ This was painful(especially all the mispronounced names), the beard with an annoying voice was Worse. "The thrill is gone"!?!? What are you even talking about??? 😆
