    What needs explaining is what happens when the dam reaches the flood plain since the next flood will start cutting at the end of the dam. This could be prevented by cutting wings at the ends of the dam down a foot or so to expose soil that has a longer duration of moisture, then if willow or rushes establish in this soil type, their roots will armor against the erosion that would cut the new channel. The wing cuts also diffuse energy by spreading the flow even wider.
