I was 13 when FF3(6) came out. It was a serious moment at that time in my life. I truly felt like games were growing and maturing with me. Games like FF6 and Chrono Trigger were the reason I could never get into the Pokémon games. They felt like a step backwards, something more for little kids then. Needless to say I've been chasing that FF6 high ever since and still nothing has come close in the last 30 years. Truly a special work of art 😘👌🏻
Love this story. I saw an ad in March '94 that FF3 would be out in October, and I went to the calendar to start saving my allowance cash. The only game I ever bought on release day, too. 11 year old me was blown away.
@@Fortefyre personally, Lunar Silver Star Story came pretty close from what I can remember of it. But SNES era SquareSoft was untouchable and most of it has held up extremely well.
Currently playing Chrono trigger for the first time and it’s mind blowing. Honorable mention to Batman Returns. Always thought that game was super impressive graphically.
Super Castlevania 4,Mega Man X,Super Metroid,Legend of Zelda:Link to the Past, and Gradius 3. All had great looking graphics, and were the most fun to play!
I say Yoshi's Island is still the best looking SNES game. Dang good art style. While Zero Mission has more convincing looking environments, Super Metroid still succeed with providing a darker feel than Samus's previous adventures and things would get darker with Fusion. Even the main series title theme became ominous there. Donkey Kong Country 3 has very good looking backgrounds. While Star Fox 2 may not have been here, it's visually impressive in its own way.
Chrono Trigger is not just a beautiful game, it's a masterpiece of interactive fiction. Every summer I do another run for full completion and that's been a tradition for over 20 years.
I remember talking with a Nintendo consumer service rep about Donkey Kong Country. He said his jaw dropped when he saw the visuals, and when he saw that it was coming out for SNES, the first words out of his mouth were, “See ya later, Sega!”
The only game I ever purchased for the SNES on release day was Chrono Trigger (and at the time, it was $79.99). I was always amazed by the look and feel of that game. Was super pissed when a roommate took off with it when he moved out. Love that game!
68% of viewers are gremlins. I could never put my finger on why Donkey Kong irritated me so much, but I think you nailed it. The zoomed in feeling requiring lightning reflexes or memorization is what did it. The music, though, is spot on along with final fantasy 2,3, and chrono trigger that made in those cases a great game even better.
Tales of Phantasia, while a Japanese only game (now translated into English), looks like a legitmate PS1 game. One of the most impressive looking SNES games I've ever seen. It also uses actual spoken lyrics on the original cartridge. Simply mind-blowing.
As for least visually pleasing NES, Famicom, SNES, and Super Famicom titles: NES- Lion King (official version), Action 52, Ghostbusters 1, Total Recall, and Bart vs the Space Mutants. Famicom- Transformers: Convoy no Nazo, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Mobile Suit Gundam Z: Hot Scramble, Tetsuwan Astro Boy, and Mahjong. SNES- Wayne's World, Pit Fighter, Ballz 3D, Bebe's Kids, and World Class Rugby. Super Famicom- Romancing Saga 1, F-1 Grand Prix, Kakinoki Shogi, Derby Stallion '96, and Namco Open.

You came through and picked the games that broke graphical new ground on the system, Super Mario RPG and DK Country. Yoshi's Island is another of my favorites and the info was very educational.
This is one of your best lists! I’m glad you took art as a major focus instead of tech and because of that you have a lot of choices you don’t see in this category that deserve it like Metal Warriors and ST2. I have to throw Demon’s Crest out there as a contender. It copies Super Metroids dark color scheme with a Castlevania/Ghouls and Ghosts theme. I rarely see R-Type III mentioned. It has probably the best art style and flashiness of all the SNES SHMUPS and then also Space Megaforce that has an insane amount of stuff going on with no slowdown.
Another awesome video bro. Personally FF my favorite SNES game. Crono trigger is a close second. Have a great day and see ya on the next one. Peace!!!!
Speaking of Donkey Kong 3, Hudson actually created their own version called Donkey Kong 3: Dai Gyakushu. No surprise it has a closer resemblance to Galaga. Though Stanley is still on the ground. It should be noted all the backgrounds have no real story to them aside from being chosen due to display limitations.
I have a confession: The Super NES is my favorite console of all time and I love its library of games…….yet I’ve never played Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI.
If you're crazy about the box art for the Final Fantasy series, you need to check out the book series Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive. What the Lost Worlds concerts did for the music, Ultimania did for the artwork. Absolutely gorgeous. 10/10 on the nostalgia scale once again.

I'm an RPG fan, so I can't help but agree with Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy VI, and Chrono Trigger being among the best looking SNES games. When I got my SNES, I got Super Mario World (of course) and Super Mario All-Stars. I was amazed at the graphics. When I played Final Fantasy IV for the first time, I was even more amazed at the jump in looks and sound from the first game (not knowing there were two others we hadn't yet seen released for the Famicom). For me, Final Fantasy VI is the pinnacle of 16-bit RPGs. Chrono Trigger is great, but it just didn't appeal to me in quite the same way. Super Mario RPG was a short, but pivotal, game in the world of both Square and Mario. It sucks they parted paths when the N64 and PlayStation were in the works, but I guess we got FFVII, at least. Later Mario RPG games (Paper Mario, etc.) were pretty good. Like most consoles, the later games were able to make earlier games look like relics. Compare SMB to SMB 3, or early PlayStation games to those released in the late '90s. The SNES was no exception, and I think we all benefited from the labor of the games' creators.
Super Castlevania IV, Axelay, Actraiser 1 and 2 (I know, I know, Actraiser 2 sucks, but look at the artwork), Hagane: The Final Conflict, Nightmare Busters. And that's just what I come up with off the top of my head.
I say it's time to talk about something really important. Of course I mean, dinosaur chicken nuggets. Tyson makes them. But, the newest reworking of them sees them a lot smaller with less chicken and no seasoning to make them as good as they were. So I say, the best ones are the ones from Target stores. Look, the reality is that retro gaming has romanticized these games. I'm 47. I grew up on them. My first game console was a used ColecoVision. My first game console that I actually played on was my dad's Intellivision II. Both of those are early to mid-80s consoles that have long since been forgotten. Atari was remembered for almost crashing the U.S. market. Nintendo is still around making consoles to this day, and the NES basically saved gaming in the States. Sega is still relevant today as well, and had a hand in creating the 16-bit wars and making it a great time for gaming. Back then. The reality is that, as someone who played those games new, they lacked a lot. Flicker, slowdown, glitches galore, frozen screens halfway through a nightmare stage. Difficulty that was designed less to genuinely challenge the player, and more to disguise the pathetic length of game that you were actually getting for what was a very large sum of money at the time. There were so many problems with gaming back then. It's just hilarious to me how people in their 20s and 30s today will look back and think that they missed out on something great. It's made even worse with all of the nostalgia fueled garbage that has been releasing. It's one thing to genuinely take a game like Resident Evil 4 or Final Fantasy 7, and remake them, such that they are probably far closer to the creators original vision, thanks to modern tech. It's quite another to take a dozen or so Turtles games from the 80s/early 90s and sell them at a full retail price. Or to make a game like TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, and make it look so goddamn pixelated that it mat as well have originally launched on the SNES as a massive cartridge. It's the very attitude that this channel with its lists, and other retro channels, seem to create that I dislike. I was there for these games back in the day. They were amazing at the time. Like at that very specific moment in time. I can appreciate what they looked like, based on what they had to work with. I've even recently admired some old Castlevania games since I bought the Anniversary Collection, and thought while playing them, that they really did look good. But even that was in context of the fact of what they had to work with. I've personally got zero desire to revisit those days. As I mentioned, lists like this romanticze these games. And I'm tired of that romanticizing leading to games that look horrible at 4K because people fell in love with pixel art. Shredder's Revenge was a fun game, but it would have been made even better had the game looked like the actual cartoon that I grew up with. See, that was the promise of new tech; to be even more immersive than what came before it. So instead of getting that Turtles game that would have looked just like the 80s cartoon, I get more pixelated trash like I played almost 40 years ago. I've got nothing against best of lists. The SNES was an amazing console. Like I said, I was there during its heyday. There's no denying that games like the SFII and Mortal Kombat series did a hell of a job recreating the arcades graphics. And I still play SNES games from time to time. But these are games that graphically, don't stand the test of time. By the mid 90s, the PlayStation and Saturn had already started to bring true arcade ports to the home market, while offering a new experience in 3D. And for what it's worth, those early 3D games graphics are trash too.
I was 13 when FF3(6) came out. It was a serious moment at that time in my life. I truly felt like games were growing and maturing with me.
@Xoulrath_ well hell I'll get to the newer games I promise 🤣🤣
Looking at graphics alone, there is nothing on Genesis that looks as good as Yoshis island; hell it looks better than Sonic Cd and Knuckles chaotix.
I feel like most genesis devs focused on rgb quality graphics.
