This Ant Accidentally Finds Ancient Fossils

  • Looking for fossils smaller than the size of grains of rice in the vast desert seems almost impossible. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack. Ouch. But harvester ants make it possible. In fact, they make it pretty easy. They dig deep underground to find small rocks to fortify their mounds, finding microfossils in the process. They are so amazing that I've looked at a bunch of papers to learn more about them.

    there has to more species of ants that do this, like in Africa or Mongolia. Kansas can't be the only place that ants build loose mounds of small gravel they pull up from the ground. And even so, I bet their somewhat invasive already, setting up new dig sites in the old world as well
