@@MimiYouyu Well, instead of going backstage she walked down the stairs to hug him again, so I do not think she held any grudge against Jack Nicholson that evening...
I find it amusing how she has this intimidating & towering personality & when she begins to speak, sounds like the sweetest, kindest, most gentle soul.
Angelica Huston was by far the greatest in this category that year. She showed a brilliant performance. Actually I'm surprised she won ONLY 1 Oscar in her career. Shame!!!
alex blend I haven't seen the film. But my favorite film ever is TCP. I'm sure Angelica did a phenomenal job as she is so talented, but I really loved Oprah's performance.
This was a fairly competitive year for this category. But handily, Huston gave the best performance. She artfully combined the slyness and complexity of her role while hitting all the subtle, emotional peaks. Huston hilariously mined the dark aspects of her character without being a cliche.
I thought Margaret Avery gave the best performance that year and Meg Tilly was incredible. Anjelica Huston gave a wonderful performance for all the points you have mentioned - and I love the movie very much - but many Academy members vote for their friends and/or people with whom they have worked. We have heard stories of how some videos - of performances submitted for review - are not even looked at, a they don't know the actor, the director, or find the plot too creative, too confounding. There was no way the daughter of John Huston (Maltese Falcon, Chinatown) and the girlfriend of Jack Nicholson was going to lose that night. Every now and then, the Academy gets it right (for the right actor and the right performance). Oftentimes, it's for the right actor but the wrong performance, or a performance in which they believe the actor is due, after having given the award to a friend of the Academy in an earlier year.
That hairstyle and dress is Timeless❤️💯 She is a great performer and always plays the best suited roles..even though in real life she is so Angelic! beauty and brains
pokergalpoker I scanned the comments to see if anyone else caught that. Screw the Exit Stage Right stuff, she bee-lined it back to her seat, down the center steps!
Who else came here because of the Vulture article claiming Oprah has held a grudge against Anjelica after the oscar loss. I love Oprah, but totally can see that. Oprah is not even smiling after losing here.
She gave an even better performance in her father’s last picture, “The Dead.” But I don’t recall if she was nominated. The Dead was a small film about Ireland in the early-1900s. Anjelica doesn’t do much through most of the picture, until near the end. Then she gives the most heart-rending reminiscence about long-departed friends and family.
Alot of people commented how she didnt say anything to her father on the way to the stage. She said that if she had she would have been too emotional then and unable to give a speech - which is why she ran back to him directly from the stage.
All the whiners are wrong regardless of how strong the competition was that year. Angelica's Mafia princess, the "family scandal," was one of the genuinely witty things in a foul-tasting movie. Deserved, deserved, deserved. But Amy Madigan was great too.
A phenomenal actress! Also super gorgeous. She did brilliantly well in The Grifters (1990) and was nominated for it, but how I wish she was nominated also for The Witches (1990) where she did just as brilliantly!
Happy Birthday Anjelica. I was 16 yrs when you won your deserved Oscar. I like to think I grow up with you and loved watching your work. Have a fantastic day. Respect and love. ❤🎉🥂
Anjelica probably would have also gotten an Oscar nomination for "The Witches" if she would not have been nominated for "The Grifters" in the same year.
This may seem like a controversial choice now considering how beloved The Color Purple is now, but Huston swept all the critics' awards that year. I remember not believing Huston won for that performance considering all the excellent performances she gave afterwards. Further, after seeing Huston's performance, with that small amount of screen time, I couldn't believe she beat out Tilly in what was essentially a lead role with the most screen time and the tour de forces of Avery and Winfrey. But then I couldn't get Huston's performance out of my mind and it really stayed with me. I realized she gave a deceptively natural performance and really showed level of skill. I can see why she walked away with the award. Tilly may have had more screen time, but I don't think she really gave anything more to the role than was asked for as the role itself gave most of the performance. Furthermore, The Color Purple is a movie that I loved when I first saw it when I was younger, but I seem to like it less and less every time I watch it. I just notice its flaws more and thought Spielberg was a bit immature with some of the direction he gave. Oprah gave a good debut performance but I don't know if she gave one that was really award worthy once you take away the initial shock of some of her scenes as she was only adequate in the quieter scenes. Avery, I can see being deserving but Huston, I think, showed more nuance and subtlety and was in a more challenging role because there were no big scenes for her to show-off like the way Avery was able to. People say Spielberg was robbed of a Best Director nod, but I can see how Kurosawa, my personal pick, and Weir edged him out in the the Best Director category. Kurosawa's directing in Ran was masterful and should be taught, and even the seemingly lighthearted Prizzi's Honor showed Huston at the top of his game. The movie was paced perfectly, the scenes shot expertly with the perfect balance of comedy and darkness. His subtle use of light, especially in the way he shot Huston, showed what a first-rate job he did. I can see why Spielberg was warmer received for Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan in comparison to his work here. But then, I think my favorite Spielberg film and directing job was actually in Lincoln, so that shows where my tastes lie.

thatoneguy the role in the Godfather was originally casted with Winona Ryder. She was exhausted and pulled out right before filming started. Winona would've been nominated for an Oscar.
Not only was she wonderful in Prizzi's Honor but she is part of a true Hollywood heritage. Anjelica's dad John Huston wrote and directed such Hollywood classics as Prizzi's Honor, Key Largo, The Dead, The African Queen, Treasure of Sierra Madre. Anjelica's grandfather Walter Huston was one of the best, most solid, modern actors Hollywood ever produced.
