It was great to hear Al’s Di Meola’s brief comments here, which were a fitting, personal tribute to Chick. Al contributed exciting new flavors to the magic that Chick created and left for all of us. I would like to share two personal events that show a personal side of the man Chick was, behind the legend. I wrote to him back in the 1970’s, asking where I might purchase sheet music of some of his songs. He wrote back, informing me that none was available. He also included xeroxed copies of a good number of his songs, at no charge. In a word, I was thrilled! Also, a year or so later, I decided-for some reason-to go to an address in New York that I assumed was Chick’s manager’s office. To my amazement, Chick answered the door and invited me into what appeared to be his apartment! He then began a very friendly, down to earth conversation with me, shared a recording of some piano with orchestra music he had recorded in Europe, and showed me the generosity and kindness that I, a “random’”, 18ish year old stranger, would never have expected from such a musical giant. Thank you very much for those kind gestures, which I will always treasure, Mr. Corea. And thank you for sharing your wonderful gifts, which have enriched the musical experiences of so many people, throughout your life.

What a honest note Al. I was into Chick at the same time in 1973 and was totally absorbed into Return to Forever and its major transition when Al came on board that changed the face of music.
Along with the other three fronts weather report ,mahavishnu and Return to Forever ...but Return to Forever had one thing all the others did not a serious harmonist in Chick that transcend all even now. I was lucky like Al ......to some how had flora purim sing on a project, she never knew how much I loved her and Chick and my vision as Al's to be near them....the love of Chicks music.....
and same dream Al's had to be their with that level of playing....I saw and was able to touch in a moment in time, with that musical spirit . i suppose like Al the first time I heard Chick its was Chick always, Chick and Al forever as a matter of fact, that union ....Im quite heart broken with this event........thank you so much for this comment....lol...Forgot, I met you some years ago after a weather report gig where you open I think...at a late night breakfast place and addressed you as per some friends at berkeley music...pleasant dreams in music...Al.
    Sincerely......Grayson
I forgot I might be wrong I think Al was drafted so quickly by Chick that Al first gig was with sheet
music he never had the time to learn all the songs in rehearsal and still nailed it.....lol.

Please understand me I have sincere love for Al's playing deeply and his impact with RTF as one of the great guitarist of our time, but why didn't Al have all this admiration for Chick's leadership as bandleader during the 2007-08 RTF renioun tour. Al's ego and unwillingness to work with band members in an all star setting once again alienated him from the entire band whereby he wasn't asked to come back or didn't want to come back for the second tour. RTF had to get Frank Gamble of the Electric Band to fill Al's chair.

@@ObsidianLife Would you be so kind as to explain what you meant by "they were kind of in a different category". As a young musician I would find it extremely helpful! Thanks so much!👍

Wow. Wonderful. Most serious guitar students were woodshedding Als brilliant technique. I had all his albums after RTF. To this day one of favorite Al solos is in The Sorcerer. It was Lenny's tune, but I wonder if Chick didn't compose the solo. Not that Al couldn't come up with it. Chick was very good as composing for guitar. It just sounds like something Chick would write. Does anyone know? I actually saw the Romantic Warrior show in 75. I thought I was a damn good guitarist at 16 at the time......but Al just blew me away.

Incredible musicians, incredible talent, and incredible music! Man.....what a loss, that again didn’t get enough respect from the bullshit that is the grammy’s.....something that supposed to celebrate music and those who play it. What these guys did, was years beyond what gets done by artists that get credit for clicking a mouse and sampling. What a change in music and not for the good. So much new stuff is bland and very small......Short Tales from the Black Forest is simply amazing......as all their music was and still is!
    Music for real musicians!

Pretty sure Chic knew that Al's Flamenco Style would go far in the bands moderately heavy Spanish Theme Style even though they both were Italian😎

He did not mention the jazz chic cos it is not what he likes about chic and neither do I. People get lost in jazz. Some people like language for the sake of language. But symbols has no meaning.
