As for the third row, I would just as soon not have one. I keep them flat. OK for kids. One thing you did not mention is the width of the legroom up front. Some vehicles in this segment, like the Highlander, have you in a bit of a tunnel in the drivers seat. The console is right against your right knee. I have a 2024 Ascent. I don't think for a minute that it's under-powered. Gets me merging on the highway with no problem at all. Then again, I don't race other people or their cars. Plenty of power for me and it's supposed to tow 5,000 lbs. and that's plenty. Also love the ride.
@jaimemartin6704 rated at 5k, 50% = 2.5k less 200 lbs per person, 50 lbs of luggage per person doesn't leave alot of spare room for towing much...I did see a Prius towing a steel trailer with an ATV on it the day, on I25 NB...so....😅
@@reneeann5340 There was a guy in our neighborhood... had trimmers and mowers on a steel and wood trailer.. pulled it with a classic MG. I wouldn't tow with the ascent because of the CVT transmission. If it slips once, its a gonner.
I have a 2021 Touring and it’s been great for family trips and made a joke of the snowy Vermont mountains. It does everything I need and the dog loves the 3rd row to himself. I’ve packed the in-laws into the 3rd row with the dog sitting in between the second row chairs. I’m not a fan of the cvt but the awd is reliable and predictable. Yes I would like another 20-30 hp, but this isn’t a race car.
We had a Palisade for two years we use it with 7 kids, 4 in the second row, three in the third. Iam due for a new car (it’s a company car) we test sit all of them (pathfinder, pilot, grand highlander, telluride, Ascent) the Subaru turned out the best, it has also the widest bench. The headroom is a little bit less which only affects people over 6ft, for younger kids or teens however it is much nicer in the third row because the ascent has kind of stadium seating and you can actually look out of the window. BtW even according to the numbers telluride, Pilot, palisade and Ascent are all the same, I think the reviewers get more paid or nicer gifts from other brands that’s why the Subaru is also cheaper. The Subaru has also more torque than Pilot, pathfinder, telluride, palisade
I got a 2022 just to avoid the screen and actually just wanted the extra rear legroom and cargo room. The other 3rd rows SUVs were just too big. We’ve fit teens in the third row with no issue but definitely not for adults
On my highway trip from Toronto to Ottawa averaging 110 km/hr I got fuel consumption of just under 7 L/100 km (32 mi/gal). Naturally, if you drive it as if it was a WRX (it was clocked doing 0-100 with break torquing at under 6.5 seconds), the fuel consumption is going up, but if you drive intelligently, with some understanding of how a CVT works and taking full advantage of it, it will be very good for the class. My combined summer fuel consumption is around 8.5 l/100km.
When do you switch from snow to deep snow ? That cannot be measured in inches. If the traction control starts to inhibit the forward progression of your vehicle when driving in snow , that is when you switch to heavy snow.
What you do get is Subaru's dependability, which is top notch. We just purchased the touring ascent. It's wonderful to drive or be a passenger. The third row seats lack leg and head room, but ours will be used to transport the dog or luggage. We sold our 2012 outback and the ascent is a huge improvement.
Subaru changed how they measure cargo volume recently. With all seats down it originally measured 86 cubic feet making it competitive with other makes.
2023 ascent owner and it's great. compared all the competitors and went with this because we only occasionally need to seat people in the third row. When we do, we just adjust the other seats so there is enough space in all the rows. It's also not as big as the other competitors which makes the handling nicer i think. Really my only complaint is that you can't finger scroll maps in CarPlay. The built in maps you can slide around, but not CarPlay maps. That is actually very annoying.
You can auto open the rear liftgate from the key fob goober. That 270hp engine is very stout, did you even drive the thing much? It's a beast off the line and plenty of power on the highway. My 24 Onyx Edition was 5 grand cheaper then anything else I looked at. The 24 Ascent is an outstanding vehicle.
Have had a 2023 touring for about 9 months (also have a 2020 outback). The boxer 4 turbo is not underpowered for this - have been impressed with it. I personally don’t use the 3rd row and keep it flat. If you are looking for something to haul 7-8 people in on a regular basis, I’d go with something else (e.g. minivan). All wheel drive is what you’d expect from a Subaru. The lane assist and adaptive cruise work well. Good value for the price….I’d buy another one for sure.
If I’m gona pay more for other suvs with more luxury stuff. They also need to plow through snow. If they can’t do that. All those “nicer things” go out of the window when is -10° -20° out there and you get stuck. Basically. If you live in a place where snows a lot Subaru is the way to go. If you don’t, then There’s absolutely better options out there.

I have never owned a Subaru or even driven one. I’m a big Japanese car fan though having owned Hondas and Toyotas and love their reliability and practicality. I like the size of the Ascent and really love the integrated infotainment in the dash, IMO that looks so much nicer than the pop up iPad looking things in the Toyotas and Hondas. Plus standard AWD is fantastic. I just wish they offered this in a PHEV or at least a Hybrid. Does anyone know if that might be coming in ‘25 or ‘26?

The worst things on mine are the horrid city mileage which is 15mpg in city. It does get fairly good highway mileage. It is missing a cigerette lighter inside which totally sucks for a dash cam and other things. I don't like the fact that it does not have a right side turn camera, which my 2016 car had. The side and rearview mirrors are also tiny and don't show a big view of traffic behind you. The second row cabin seats don't fold all the way down which bugs the hell out of me, since I need that flat space for trips. Subaru does not give you any information on removing the second row seats and they basically don't want you to. I had no problem removing the second row seats out of other vans and suvs. The cup holders are only for smaller drinks. You will have to get an adaptor for large drinks. Also, there is not much if any storage space in the Acsent. I have the touring edition and all the speakers take up all the cubby hole spaces and the heated seat tubing takes up ALL the room under the seats. Basically no room in the car.
