When you sound better through a VHS tape than most other players do in a studio
Ha! Good alternative title!
I could listen to him play these changes forever, and I'm pretty sure he could keep playing over them forever, too. Such a tasty, musical soloist!
Agreed. Always tasteful and melody-lead.
i've known about this video for a while and have always thought it deserved more recognition. thanks for bringing it back, john allred is great!
I saw it only recently and knew straight away it had to go on the list!
wow. love his playing. wish there were more videos/recordings of him.
Always very melody-driven.
Look up John Allred with the Earregulars. Lots of wonderful trad jazz recordings
John Allred is a monster trombonist! ... thanks
Definitely under-acknowledged as a world class player.
I need to get more of his stuff. I just have the album with him and Wycliffe.
A complete master. Thank you for spreading the word!
Pleasure. Please share!
Superb, more chops than the butchers !
That sixteenth note run was ridiculous! Thanks for this.
So clean!
Thank you so much for digging this ! Such very inspirational phrases on “Take the A Train” changes !
Pleasure! I was inspired to transcribe it as soon as I heard it. Really glad people are watching/looking it!
John Allred a great jazz trombone player.
That's so marvelous.
Thanks for sharing here.
He's an under-appreciated master!
Added to the collection! Thank you so much for sharing - John Allred is a monster!
You're welcome! I've long thought he deserves more recognition than he gets.
Love John Allred!! I recorded his concert at the ATW with the Army Blues a few years ago, you should check it out. There’s gold there too:)
I will!
One of the now greats
As someone who plays in brass bands and uses treble clef. I can’t understand why most trombone music is written in bass clef with so many ledger lines
The lower range of the trombone accounts for usage of the bass clef in notation (E2). This transcriber could have used tenor clef or the 8vb treble clef to avoid excessive ledger lines
@@AlexFlavell I’m not arguing the point of the transcriber but the use of bass clef in general for trombone. With treble clef, at each end of the stave only about 2 or 3 ledger lines are used
Jazz is the only genre I know of where bass clef is used at all costs. Tenor, alto, and occasionally treble are used in orchestral and wind ensemble trombone parts. At this point it's just the tradition, and young jazz players are unlikely to be comfortable with other clefs. As for why it became the tradition, my guess is that players found it easier to stick to one clef in a genre that developed with less emphasis on sheet music.
Got me. Maybe because players couldn't all read tenor/treble clefs. Certainly bass clef is the first thing most people learn, so it is the most widely-legible transcription.
Also, it's usually only lead/solo parts that reach up into illegibility range. If you're writing for a 4-trombone section, most of the parts will never make it to high Bb or above. Not to defend the practice, necessarily, when sax parts are all transposed, but you wouldn't _want_ tenor clef for general big band parts: you'd end up with ledger lines _below_ the staff.
Fantastic! He's so good! One of the greatest. What an amazing find here!
Agreed. The start of that second chorus! 🤯
Holy crap this is gold, thanks for sharing!
holy moly, he's a monster 😳😳😭 can't believe I haven't heard of John Allred before
He really is! Check out my JA playlist for more transcriptions.
Pure clean range ❤
Him and his father are very inspirational!
Wonderful. Post more, if you have. Thank you.
There's still a few on the to-do list!
Un gran solo, que se puede decir mas de lo que se escucha.
Does he ever play a bad solo? Thanks for sharing---this is wonderful
I've yet to hear a bad Allred solo!
No, it’s pretty much impossible.
Beautiful stuff!!! Cheers for your constant effort Rob!
Thanks, Dave! Hope you're well?
