I like the lead tone of the 45 more, but I think chords sound better on the 45/100. They both sound great. I love your channel. Your videos are always entertaining. The frequency of your posts is amazing. Keep up the fantastic work!
Very interesting comparison, Johan! I've never had the chance to compare a JTM45 to 45/00 next to each other, but i am very much surprized by how astonishingly different they sound. The mics on the cabs were placed identically / not moved during recording of both amps. I personally very much prefer the smoothness and compression of the JTM45 in this comparison. I have a JTM45/100 clone and it sounds rather like the JTM45, but with more punch and bandwidth - it does not sound as harsh as the 45/100 in this clip (not a bad sound, but not my cup of tea so to speak).
+VintageCharlie Thanks Charlie, yeah everything was kept constant. All amps this old are individuals so it takes a comparison between a bunch of JTM45 to a bunch of JTM45/100 to get a clearer picture. I'm gonna bunch of JTM45/100 soon. Cheers
It's known as the "JTM45-100" because "JTM45" faceplates are all they had around to use, not because it's a 100W JTM45. The circuit is different in a few places, so it sounds different.
@@michaelwoods9005 Yeah, but the preamps are basically identical. This is what i was thinking 5 years ago. Most of the differences are in the power section - 4x tubes, much larger transformers, different filtering, solid state vs GZ34 rectifier. My 5 years older self now knows how much tone actually comes from the power amp in these old circuits. I've even made some tests with running various preamps (e.g. AC30, JTM45, BF Fenderetc.) into the power section of a JTM45 and AC30 and the tone (when overdriven) is clearly dictated A LOT by the Power Section. So yeah, two very different beasts :)
I have a Germino Club 40 and a Classic 45 ( Jmp-50 and JTM-45 boutique clones ) and they are killer amps and also eat pedals like nobody’s business. Great video!!! I loved the 45/100.. it’s got that extra “something” and extra headroom.. similar to what I’ve got with my 100 watt Two Rock CRS. ( dumble like amp ) Great tone you have there in BOTH amps. Magic.
JTM45 and 45/100 are my favorite amps, they can sound like huge angry Fenders imho.... Kinda make sense since they were based off the Bassman! Great demo and playing Johan!
Great comparison! I agree very similar but 45/100 slightly more aggressive. There’s another difference between the super pa and the regular 45 that may be contributing though. The mix resistors on the super pa stock are 470k giving a more aggressive sound and there a 560pf bypass cap missing on one of the mix resistors on the pa. I think this is accounting for some of the differences we are hearing. I have a 45/100 non PA and prefer it for blues rock. It’s more inspiring and versatile on its own
@Johan Segeborn, Do you have a preference Johan? I used to be all about 50/45 watters, but 100's seem to have something the halfs can't do. The attack and firmness of the single notes for instance, string seperation and the quality of the grit/gain.
What power tubes are running in the 45/100, how hot is it biased and how much wattage is it actually putting out?? I know they typically use kt66's but I've heard lots of different things about the wattage these things put out and how it really depends on the tubes you're using.
Wow, thank you so much for this comparison! The JTM45/100 really impressed me. To me it sounds even superior to the normal JTM45. Did I understand it correctly that you turned down the bass entirely? Does it sound muddy? I'd be interested how the JTM45/100 sounds with a Hammond organ ...
The 45/100 had a tighter edgier tone to it. With a Tubescreamer set just right you might even be able to replicate it with the 45 (ala. how folks run the TS in front of modern high gain amps to tighten things up.)
That could be a cool little extra thing to toss into the comparison videos. My OD of choice is Butler Real Tube (Similar to the Tube Driver Gilmour and Eric Johnson use,12AX7 powered OD with 3-band EQ, Drive and Output), EQ with a slight emphasis on the mids and bass then the drive down (for just an ever so slight bit of breakup from the pedal) and the output up higher to push the amp itself. I've yet to find an amp that doesn't just sing with it in front. I'm starting to think more and more about the Supro Black Magick and how it would sound with it in front.
Given the 30w vs "100w" difference but going into inefficient speakers I bet a 4x12 of say Eminence Red Fangs at 102.5 dbs would give the "100w" a run for its money without the extra weight and having more tubes to worry about. My guess is one plays a 45/100 because he can...not because it is needed....at least in modern times.
+NYC LP Player Yeah, speaker efficiency should indeed be the first thing to consider. Just compare a Greenback 96dB to the Red Fang or a JBL. Thats an enormous difference.
mike s As a rule on any NMV (or even up to single channel JCM800) Marshall with any level of distortion going on, the bass should be at zero or very slightly more if a looser sound is required. Anything else is just a complete mess and looses definition
I pray my handwired hand built JTM 45 sounds half this good when my tech finishes with it!!! Do you know anything about Classic Tone transformers and Choke? Thats what he built it with. \,,/
Johan I love your channel, I love your playing, you have a great sound !!!! How do you get all those amps, I mean do they belong to you, or do you rent them ?
I prefer the jtm45/100 for its punch, but not chance to have an opportunity to push it, anyway, so i am going for the JTM45 re issue with 1960AHW... when I will play in stadium I will get a 1959HW 😜😎
Is the part around 2:20 supposed to be Hendrix' Foxy Lady? The way it sounds is comparable to a chinese Gameboy with 2 buttons and pre installed games your dad brings home and says "I got you this nintendo Gameboy, son!"
The JTM 45 not the JTM 45/100 resembles the tone EVH used to get in the early club days 74 to 77 ... the lower wattage variac'd amp working harder. For this reason I prefer the JTM 45
JTM45 definitely sounds softer and more bassman-like, the 45/100 is very marshallesque. I wonder how clapton got the super smooth tones he did out of his 45/100 when he was with cream
+Rafael Paiva The most powerful 12" speakers that was used back then was the G12H30 55Hz, but two of them would only be sufficient for a 50watter. I'd go with G12-65 for such a rig. That's what ACDC used on Back in Black I have heard. Cheers
Do You know Johan....does this amp have the radiospares choke or the drake choke? Does it come with the higher voltage (560 volt screen) power transformer? I can't get enough of this video. The tone is so damn fine
This 3-year-old video just popped up on my feed, probably because I just watched another video with a 1966 JTM a few days ago. The amps in both videos sound incredible. th-cam.com/video/RCvhs0sVb0A/w-d-xo.html
You look really freaking silly, grooving around with huge blue headphones on. Also, what's the point you don't experience the amp. If you want to save your ears stand somewhere else or put a quality power soak on it.
That 45/100 is one of the best rock amps I've ever heard.
No one has more fun doing gear demos than you! Thanks for sharing all clips of all these amazing amps.
+jcshirke Thanks, that's indeed true! :-)
You need to invite Ola Englund over to see if it will chug.
Why? This guy already already has the best tones on youtube.
Hi Johan, this is the one and only demo of a 45 vs 45/100 on the net, its great to hear them back to back. Well done :) ( jtm45 vs bassman next )
+Luke Porter Thanks Luke! I can do a Bassman vs 67 JMP right away, and hopefully also the JTM45/Bassman soon!
The 45/100 sounds incredible! Early Jimi Hendrix. My new dream amp!
+Simon Warner Thanks Simon!
Who needs furniture....this proves all one needs is a lamp, a couple of plants and a JTM45 full stack. Life is good! ;)
Hahaha! ;-)
JTM 45 and 45/100 must be your secrets to keeping those plants so green!
oh man I love both so much!!! you get such killer tones every damn time!! amazing!! you must have the coolest neighbours!
+John Collier haha, wouldnt dare doing this at my flat! :-)
Johan Segeborn you ever do a Db level check on these amps when they're cranked?
+John Collier yeah, I measured it in this clip for instance
th-cam.com/video/OoPyP6JMSG4/w-d-xo.html
Johan Segeborn ah cool, thanks man :)

Beautiful tones, beatiful playing. Ty Bro
+Super Strato Thanks Bro!
Both sound amazing
+surf247365 Thanks! :-)
I liked the regular 45 better, sounded "fatter" to me. Less bite. You can really hear the power in that 100 watter though!
+xMasterxRazorx Yeah the 100 watter is a bit more like a JMP
This
the 45/100 is a beast Johan...... i love it
+PureToneAmps Thanks my friend! I love it too :-)

Ain't nothing beats that old Marshall Brit tone
Great playing Johan love your demos. I would love to see you demo a Marshall 2061x or PA20. Great amp for smaller venues.
+Phil Cammarata Thanks Phil! Yeah I hope to do those soon
JTM45 and 45/100 are my favorite amps, they can sound like huge angry Fenders imho.... Kinda make sense since they were based off the Bassman!
Great demo and playing Johan!
Very nice amps and playing Johan! I prefer the 45/100 though because it's got more bite. :D
+Edgar Lenz Thanks! Yeah it's a lot punchier!
your videos are amazing! And your riff are cool too!
Could you try with some old Peavey?!
+juan josé vega Thanks! Yeah that's a good idea. I like the Bandit!
I find myself liking that JTM 100 tone more being a Vox fan. Dunno if thats ear placebo tho
This video is badass! Love those tones. JTM 45 is my favorite.

Try the JTM 45 with an Echoplex and a Phase 90
this guy is the most underated guitarist ever!
+Young Willor thanks my friend :-)

Yeah, you can hear the bite of the solid state rectifier....
Marshall 2245x vs 1987x, thats a comparison i'm curious about. I have a hard time deciding which one i like the best
+Lars Sig Yeah, I agree :-) as soon as I get the chance!
Excellent demo love them both but I favour the 45/100 great playing to thank you 🙏
So cool! Keep reviewing!
+Yann E. Thanks! Really glad you like the clips!
What power tubes are running in the 45/100, how hot is it biased and how much wattage is it actually putting out?? I know they typically use kt66's but I've heard lots of different things about the wattage these things put out and how it really depends on the tubes you're using.
+Shaft Johnson This one has KT66 tubes I'm pretty sure.
Does the 45/100 have dual output transformers or the later single OT? Great tone!
That Super PA sounds amazing! Still KT66's? Bypass cap on mixer?
+JB Berg Thanks! Yeah it's got K66 but theres no bright cap. Cheers
It would be nice to hear a comparison between that JTM 45/100 and the Super 100JH from 2006.
+drSwan77 Yeah, if it turns up we'll do that!
That makes me wish we lived in the same city. I have a super 100JH. It's an awsome amp.
+drSwan77 Cool, where do you live?
Johan Segeborn In Stockholm. By looking at some of your footage I can tell you live in Göteborg.
+drSwan77 Well if you're ever in Göteborg you are Welcome to drop by! Cheers Johan
Wicked tone with both heads, though I prefer the slight sag with the JTM45. What bridge pickup is being used here as it works very well with both???
+Jason Matovic The Les Paul has a retrofitted 2013 Custombucker in the bridge.
+Jason Matovic Thanks, glad you like them!
+Johan Segeborn. Who is the custombucker made by......may look into grabbing one.
@@jasem1767custombucker are paf style humbuckers that Gibson makes for custom shop guitars
I'll bet these would sound even more epic with a vintage TS808 boosting them.
+Ben Randolph we can try that in a coming clip
Johan Segeborn If you were in my part of the states I'd gladly offer you the use of a 1980 TS808. Vintage is king as far as tube screamers go.
I've mentioned it before, but you should seriously make Kemper-profiles for alle these amps. You would become rich!
+MathiasLM89 yeah, we should try that on a couple of them
Johan....do you have a Kemper...???? Best Marshall Tones from you every day...!!!
+Uwe Marquardt Thanks Uwe! No I don't have a Kemper but I will demo one soon here!
The 45/100 had a tighter edgier tone to it. With a Tubescreamer set just right you might even be able to replicate it with the 45 (ala. how folks run the TS in front of modern high gain amps to tighten things up.)

They're interesting critters...
45 sounds just a bit more compressed....45/100 sound like the 45 turned to 11! Love my 45 with a ppimv.
+NYC LP Player Yeah the compression is the biggest difference.

Do you set bass at zero for recording purposes like muddiness or just more how you get the tone you want?
+mike s That's to get the tone I want. On a volume like this the cab itself produces enough bass.
mike s As a rule on any NMV (or even up to single channel JCM800) Marshall with any level of distortion going on, the bass should be at zero or very slightly more if a looser sound is required. Anything else is just a complete mess and looses definition

Aah that makes sense! I've learned a lot from your channel! Keep the awesome videos coming!!
+mike s Thanks, it will be my pleasure :-)

The 45/100 is more punchier, I believe that it has more headroom and clean distortion with the guitar's volume knob more easily
+Glauco Santiago yeah it has. :-)
Johan I love your channel, I love your playing, you have a great sound !!!! How do you get all those amps, I mean do they belong to you, or do you rent them ?
JTM 45 tube rectified and JTM 45/100 s.s. rectified?
+Nathan Cockerham That's correct! :-)

if i use a eq pedal in the loop to boost some frequenceis for a solo, could demage the power tubes?(marshall 1987x)
+Rafael Paiva no you'll be ok
Is the part around 2:20 supposed to be Hendrix' Foxy Lady? The way it sounds is comparable to a chinese Gameboy with 2 buttons and pre installed games your dad brings home and says "I got you this nintendo Gameboy, son!"
+xstingrayx hahaha! ...and I'm the son right?
Can this amp do Hardcore punk?
Johan, are both these amps running gec kt66 tubes?
Do you normally run the bass off or very low on most of your amps you play?
That 45/100 is killer, much more punch and lower mid characteristics, and by lower I mean lower and not upper mids
He used the normal channel only, and his JTM45-100 was a tremolo model, which has some treble roll-off at higher volume.
what is the best speaker combination for a 2x12 plexi marshall?(100w)
+Rafael Paiva The most powerful 12" speakers that was used back then was the G12H30 55Hz, but two of them would only be sufficient for a 50watter. I'd go with G12-65 for such a rig. That's what ACDC used on Back in Black I have heard. Cheers
