  • SIP and VOIP are connected technologies that are actually well known in business use. But no one really understand how this can used for personal privacy. We are going to explain what this is all about and how it works, and what side services are needed to make this function well as a robust communications solution for everyday use. This solution, if paired with a No-KYC (no ID) provider creates some unusual approaches that are a big win for privacy.

    I have a full FreePBX system operating on my property with a few dozen SIP phones. My business uses the same system and ports to specific phones. It's setup was tedious and I documented it heavily to make sure that if it ever crashed and I couldn't reboot a clone, I could rebuild easily. It was a lot of work but so worth it.

      There are probably docker kubernetes sort of containerized apps to instantly deploy Freepbs then you just need to edit your trunk info website user password. Plus if you mount the config locally you can backup settings and redeploy in minutes on a new pc

      @pimactv9778 There are no official or "good" ones. FreePBX is not a good candidate for docker. It is a collection of multiple software including Asterisk, Apache2, FreePBX, MySQL, and a litany of dependencies. It can be done, and some do roll their own, but I find that the juice is not worth the squeeze when you consider you will want to update on the next deployment anyway.

      @@MelroyvandenBerg I am currently working on trying to create a WIki for that purpose. The biggest issue with it is that there are a lot of things that must be in place to start with before a PBX system can be deployed. FreePBX as a simple install ported to the internet (required if you want outside phone number access or remote phone/softphone access to your system) is a GIANT honeypot for script kiddies and spammer hackers and they will brute force your system to the Nth degree if a scan shows it is there. Why? Because it is not horribly complicated to break into it and if they manage to, and I have seen it happen, then they use your VOIP info to drain your call accounts and start massive spamming operations under your number making it worthless in a matter of a few days. This is why the Braxman SIP stuff is 'easier'... they do all the work to make sure that your instance is safe and locked down. Running your own PBX has a huge learning curve and there are 100's of options to choose from within that program that get very overwhelming, not to mention pretty quickly open new avenues for hackers to exploit. Contrary to a poster above, I would NEVER trust any kind of prebuilt Docker container or the likes that has a "preconfigured" system setup. It would be preconfigured for someone else's access and because there are lots of things to change to make it your own, you'd miss important items and it would be a mess. There ARE great multi-video tutorials out there on how to set up FreePBX/Asterisk but be prepared to invest a couple dozen hours worth of time watching them and a week or more debugging. Wish I had a better answer for you - Took me a month of messing with it and the heartburn to go with it.

      I setup an Asterisk server in Champagne, Illinois in 2004 (I think). We were shopping for a PBX system and talking to several vendors in the area. I asked each one if they had heard of Asterisk and only one had. When we deployed Asterisk and they didn’t get the business, the owner of one of the PBX dealers showed up to a meeting with his lawyer threatening to sue us. Doing that project made me realize quality handsets were the way to go because there was a lot of cost for the handsets. We had to use a Sangoma board to interface the PRI-ISDN lines because the one we got from Digium let out the blue smoke when we plugged it in. Later I noticed that Sangoma has appeared to have bought Digium. Also Digium is from Huntsville, Al and I live in Huntsville now.

I still have a PAP2T kicking around here somewhere. I used to have it set up so that someone could call my cell phone and if I didn't answer it my cell service would forward the call to the office number which would pick up the line, Asterisk voice attendant would give the hello, you've reached blah, hit 1 for technical support ... blah blah blah which would ring my office VOIP phone and if I didn't answer THAT it would take a message and then mail the voicemail message to me. There's really a LOT you can do with it.

    Most fibre internet users in the UK are already using VOIP. We are and most of the people we know are. The main phone provider is British Telecom and they call it Digital, and it just plugs into the back of the router. I believe that the majority of the UK is supposed to be using VOIP by 2027. I believe it's still possible to purchase a SIM card for cash & with no ID required at that point of purchase.
      But then, before you can actually start to use the card to make phone calls etc, it has to subsequently be "activated" with the service provider.
      At that point, the user will then be required to produce acceptable forms of ID, before the service provider will "activate" the SIM card & allow it to be used to make phone calls etc.
      So there really is no way around having to provide some type of acceptable ID when using a SIM card.

    VOIP numbers don't work for everything. Sites can tell if it's a landline, mobile, or voip number because the carriers are legally required to report it. Some sites won't accept VOIP numbers especially for account activation. You can bypass this sometimes by registering the number while its registered to a cell and then porting it after creating the accounts.

    Just a comment on a feature that might at first seem counterintuitive to privacy, which is call recording. Apparently it's a standard option on Android phones, but in South Africa of all places (where corruption is rampant) Samsung turned it off recently .. fortunately only after it saved me from what might have been very expensive medical bills due to a service provider's profound failure in communication (long story). Besides this feature of truth verification, there is also great value in being able to refer back to a recording for complex details like directions, or medical/technical information delivered in a call, especially when a pencil and paper are not available at the time of the call.
    So, now that these benefits of call-recording are unavailable thanks to the interference with standard call apps on Android, i wonder if there's any hope of finding it in your solutions?

PBX phones don't have line appearances, you'd normally dial 9 to pull dial tone from a shared pool of lines, COT or PRI lines, then you can make an outbound call. Of course you can get service for your legacy PBX with TDM endpoints (analog & digital phones), there are thousands of hospitals, businesses and government facilities still using legacy PBXs with TDM endpoints.

    Rob, Could you occasionally explain to your viewers what a 'land line' is. Calls to and from me go through my cable provider (Xfiinity/Comcast), but the equipment on my end is hard-wired requiring standard telephone wiring connections. Is this a landline? I'll presume it is. Can you provide a more technical definition? (Since you frequently get new viewers, your explanation may need to be repeated every so often, as needed.) Thanks.

    • @CaliforniaTravelVideos
      @CaliforniaTravelVideos 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, you're on the right track. Originally the telephone company would provide (after shared public) phone lines where each home would have a dedicated copper wire pair between the telephone company's central office and the subscriber's home. The bundles of wires might be on telephone poles, buried underground, etc. Over the years, technologies, economics, locations (distances), regulatory and competition led the way to alternatives from the POTS land lines (Plain Old Telephone Service) over PTSN (Public Telephone Switched Network).

    • @martybecklenberg4846
      @martybecklenberg4846 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@CaliforniaTravelVideos Rob, I'm still unclear about your response. Are you saying that telephone calls coming through a Comcast or Verizon or AT&T Internet cable are valid examples of 'land line calls'? What the difference between such calls and VOIP calls?

    • @CaliforniaTravelVideos
      @CaliforniaTravelVideos 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@martybecklenberg4846 This could be a very long answer, which we'd have to go back to your assumptions and I doubt that's where you want to go. Suffice it to say that a hard-wired POTS line generally has a dedicated wire pair from the "phone company" (Ma Bell or Independent Telco) "switching machine" where the audio proceeds to/from you, the subscriber's touch tone phone that rings on an incoming call and has dial tone when you go "off hook" to make an outgoing call. VOIP by its very name is Voice Over Internet Packet/Protocols which obviously is encoded data - not voice frequencies, etc. When you throw in the assumption that (former) MaBell companies like AT&T and Verizon (as well as when Comcast initially got into provision switched telephone calls using AT&T 5ESS systems, etc) began moving from voice analog to internet switched transmission facilities, the whole conversation becomes... it depends...
