This is freaking amazing. I was thinking about adding a screen but then thought I was being unreasonably stupid with my new ideas related to HA. So, I am not the only one filled with what might seem like stupid ideas when it comes to HA. It is literally 4:00 AM here in Berlin, and I just finished integrating my SONOFF smart modules.
Refreshing to see a video about your take on this and how you “could” do others but just had requirements you needed. It’s fairly cheap, presented amazing and concise. Benefits of “can be used for other stuff cus it’s a Pi” are great. Really love this video. Will be subscribing to see what else you have. 10/10 mate, keep up the awesome work.
Thank you for showing, quite clearly, how simple it is to do a project like this. Gives me hope I might make a version that works, too. Something to do with that small stack of RPI3 over in the corner.
Thanks for the review, the diasplay indeed works (with touch) on RPi4. I didn't get the touch feature working on a RPi3, but for me that is not an issue :)
Fun fact, every company selling their product on Amazon needs to have a registered trademark. Trademarks take time to be approved because research has to be done to find if they could be infringing. Quicker to get approved if your trademark is just a jumble of random letters. You'll notice it all over Amazon.
They don't (I sell on Amazon). But having a trademark allows you to have a nicer listing (A+ content instead of plain text), it also protects you a bit more against highjackers (who'd sell a dqdiezjf screen on your listing for a jdskjdsjd screen). What is mandatory, though, is to put your brand name in the listing title. And you absolutely don't want to infringe on someone else's trademark, which is easy when your brand name is xcxc,;xnvcx
Random question which I may have missed, but as well as being portable, do you have it plugged in when don't need it to be portable? Do you just plug into the power bank or something?
@@scottpinhorne There's a guy on TH-cam (Everything one place or something like that) who does great charger and power banks reviews and he always checks that: some power banks don't renegotiate their power delivery when their input is plugged/unplugged and so can be used as a UPS
I was thinking of going for the pi route but would an old Chromebook that has a touch screen display work? These can usually run linux or Flex after physically removing one of the screws. Dunno if touch screen or tablet mode would still work.
Probably a dumb question but if I get the Home Assistant Green can I just plug it into the tablet that is shown on this video and go from there with everything set up once I create my account?
@@steveweiland5841 I’ve just read it has a HDMI port but states it’s for diagnostic purposes only so it’s unlikely that it will output a display and more than likely it outputs a text console only so sadly no.

Nothing personal, and you do you. But, this to me feels sloppy. I have at least for testing purposes HA running on a virtual Machine on my QNAP NAS, and well it works. I just get the feeling it could work better on something else. Say a Raspi for instance.
@@Ichijoe2112 if it works well and your happy with it why waste time you could be using for something else just because you feel it could be better? A VM works for me and I agree it could be better :-)

From the bottom...1. HDMI, 2. USB C (POWER), 3. USB C to USB A (to Raspberry, needed for the touch feature)!

Could probably find an older touch screen laptop tablet thingy no one wants for 30 bucks used. but 15 inches is harder to find for sure.
Set up a script that will automatically run Chrome for you with the address of home asustent in full screen
