Israel, Syria, Iran: how the Middle East is about to change

  • With the Israel Gaza war reportedly on the brink of a ceasefire and Iran reeling after the devastation of Hezbollah in Lebanon and the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, the Middle East is on the cusp of a complete realignment in 2025.
    [Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...]
Will Syria buck the trend of so many nations after the Arab Spring that have descended into chaos after the fall of a tyrant? The country’s new de facto leader Mohammed al-Jolani, who is now using his real name Ahmed al-Sharaa, says he will be moderate and will stay out of his neighbours affairs.
But will neighbouring powers stay out of Syria? What will Iran do now that so many of its proxies have been devastated since October the 7th?
And if there’s a ceasefire in Gaza, what next for the Palestinians?
To discuss all this and more in this week’s episode of the Fourcast, Matt Frei was joined by Channel 4 News’ Foreign Affairs Correspondent Secunder Kermani and Jonathan Rugman - who covered the Middle East for years at Channel 4 News and is a now a Senior Associate Fellow at the defence and security think tank Rusi.
Produced by Calum Fraser, Rob Thomson, Silvia Maresca, Ka Yee Mak

I have no issue with discussions like this with its abundantly obvious biases. However, I think it wrong that the very same people are those who go to these places and we expect to report the ‘facts’ with as little bias as humanly possible. I think this is a significant misunderstanding of Israeli society in general, and it's current attitude towards PM Netanyahu in particular 14:17. Yes, Netanyahu's political fortunes have improved since October 7th, given the successes against Hamas, Iran, and in particular Hezbollah. That said, most polls still consistently show the current coalition government dropping to 43% of the Knesset (Israeli parliament), down from their current 57% majority. That a huge 25% drop. Conversely, most Israelis, including left-wing Israelis, disdain International organizations and NGOs, such as the UN, ICC, ICJ, Amnestying, Red Cross, etc. They consider them to be inherently anti-Israeli, and mostly anti-semitic. As a result, the attitudes of the organizations towards Netanyahu actually serve to increase support for him. Also, many Israelis want the war in end not because of pity towards Palestinians - whom they consider responsible for the current situation - but because they prioritize the release of the hostages. If not for that, most Israelis would like to see Hamas wholly destroyed.

EXACTLY!! Turkey is probably the most important player and factor in Syria and the Levant region at large. Erdogan is expansionist and wants to reclaim the Ottoman territories. Despite his own personal sentiments about Israel, the Turkish population wants him to be more involved and to do more for the Palestinians. His lack of action is why his party lost during the last elections. And since then, he has dialled up his rhetorics against Israel because he read the room. Turkey is a more powerful military power than Iran and a Sunni nation. The Egyptian and Iranian President held a meeting for the first time in 12 years, facilitated by Turkey. There is no Palestinian state. The last and only elections were held on the West Bank of the Jordan River in the Palestinian Authorities '-held areas in 1996. If the Palestinians were to vote, Hamas would win hands down, just like in Gaza in 2006.
You're right there is no open-ended question about Syria. With the Turkish-backed Sunna Islamic rebels, the most optimistic possibility is a regime similar to Egypt, but most likely identical to Assads Regime. Pro Sunna instead of Alawites.

They say they are Jews but are without Semitic lineage. They're descended from Khazars who converted en masse to Judaism, to avoid taking sides between the Ottoman and Byzantine empires.
These who say they are Jews but are without Semitic lineage were transplanted to Palestine starting from the early 1900's to 1948 by the British empire and Rothschilds (who funded Scofield to distort the New Testament and brainwash evangelicals like Huckabee), from places like Kiev, Bucharest, Berlin, Budapest, Warsaw, and Moscow, to displace and commit atrocities against Palestinian Jews, Christians, and Muslims who had lived in peace for centuries.
