We are back with another photography challenge - try new techniques, learn new camera skills and explore your creativity. Thank you for supporting the Photo Genius channel. Paul @ Photo Genius
Hi Paul I prefer no 3 as you can see more of the water and I think this brings a little touch more to the photo with the shadows in it great original photo tho cheers raymond
I like how the clouds, sky and sea turned very blue there. It made the photo amazing, very artistic and it makes a great piece of abstract art in its own right. It's more amazing then if the sky and sea had been left at their natural colour. I'm often playing around with the hue slider or even the normal adjustment sliders if I want to turn a photo more artistic. I'm just one of those guys that like to make things look crazy. If I can turn a quite normal photo in to some crazy but cool looking piece of art, then I will, though my friends don't often like them, but then art can be anything. It's what you're happy looking at that matters. I know they aren't that keen on art anyway, so I'm never offended they don't like them. Though it's a bit of a worry, as I'd like to make a career out of my art and photography soon and I'm always thinking, if all of them don't like it, what hope have I got of selling enough to make a living out of it.
Thankyou Paul. I want to begin taking silhouette photography. I'm going to Townsville to visit my daughter 24th Sept. She is studying ro be a vet. I'm also taking my younger daughter with me. Both girls dislike photos of themselves.. however... I believe silhouette photographs may be a great way to capture them that they will like.
By the way, you look so much like my old school mate Matt. I've only recently found your channel and am enjoying the videos. Some things I knew, but some I didn't. But I find it always great to watch tutorial videos to see what extras you can pick up and see if someone does something better or different then I have been doing.
G'day Paul, another crackin vid mate, IMO pic 3 was the best one as the reflection off the bigger expanse of water seemed to make the rest of the photo join together.
I agree with Phil. In pic 1 the subject is all but lost but in pic 3 the shadow helps bring out the subject. Pic 1 could be improved though, by simply zooming in as much as in pic 3. Pic 2 is just too vacant.
How about a comparison of the different post photo software, such as Lightroom or Photoshop? Which ones do you recommend? Thanks for all your tutorials.
Of the three versions of your daughter, I prefer #3. For me, it's a more powerful image and has an empowering feel to it. Actually, these are three completely different images for me; and I can see value in all of them. My choice would depend on the story I want the picture to tell. All these versions of the image are appealing to me. Each has a different feel and tells me a different story.
Hi Paul another one I have saved your explanation of how things are done is fantastic all your images were stunning when asked to chose a favourite I liked your version not using the rule of thirds it really suited that compositin. I am very new to all this and learned a lot from you. thank you so much
What a coincidence 😂 Today Morning i tried to do this type of Photography But the results came very bad I thought of googling this but i couldn't find a helpful video Thanks for this video 💖
Great video as always and I have learned so much since I started taking photo's in December. Looking forward to better weather where I can get out to get more, even bought my kids Rebel t7's and one has had a photography class and one is signed up for one. A person shared in the FB group that Canon has free software called Digital Photo Professional 4 and all you need to do is enter the Camera's Serial number to download it.
Thank you Genius, very helpful. Have you, or could you do a video on the movie function on a Canon EOS camera please? Can't get more than twenty seconds recording time.
Like the topic but really disappointed you didn't do an indoor option too, for those of us still in strict lockdown. I understand principles but always helpful to have even a basic rundown.
Hi Jude, set a subject against a window and you should be able to create the same effect easily. Try at different times of the day to see how the light changes and affects the image. Consider using the timer as well and shooting some self portrait silhouette.
Am really intrigued by challenge 19, thank you Paul. You explained it all superbly J. D. Leonard- Pa., USA P.S. YOU have the knack for explaining tricky things more clearly
I have Photoshop but using it is really difficult. I'd love a link to your lesson on that program, or if you could consider making one I'd feel lucky. You have a great teaching style.
Hello! How to differentiate between exposure compensation and ISO. Both seem to give same result? Brighten or darken your image. In this case could you have reduced the ISO instead of the exposure compensation??
Hi Paul, I have a doubt, it's irrelevant to this video but I know you can help me on this. I have two packs of silica gel in my camera bag. Is it okay to carry it in flight. Please help me
I always have and never been stopped by authorities. My packets I bought have silica gel printed on them too, so I guess that would help if they ever queried it. I always take my camera bags on as hand luggage too.
Why state that the rule of thirds is super important and then state that it can also just be a guide and is not important. This just confirms my believe that professional thirds are just full of it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That is the ONLY evidentiary truth about photography.
Hi Rob, You are absolutely spot on, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and likewise photography (like any art form) is subjective. What I like about an image the next person may not, and that of course is fine because we are all welcome to our opinions. In the video I actually say "Composition is incredible important when it comes to photography" - and I stand by that statement. I chose to feature the rule of thirds as it is the most commonly know and used composition rule, but as I mention in the video "The rule of thirds does not have to apply to every single image", in fact some of my favourite images do not follow the rule of thirds. Thanks for watching.

Number 1. Loving your challenges.
Hi Paul I prefer no 3 as you can see more of the water and I think this brings a little touch more to the photo with the shadows in it great original photo tho cheers raymond
I also like the rocks, or whatever they are, in the foreground. Also, my eye is drawn mostly to his daughter yet still on the whole.
I like the original No.1, great photo. Hellow from Mexico !!!
Hi Paul, love the shot were you placed your daughter in the top third. More water sets it of really well. Cheers. Phil
Paul, I’m not only jealous of your photography knowledge, but also your hair!
YESS! PAUL IS BACK!!
I think the first one was the best
Silhoutte first one 👍
Definitely the original picture with the axis in the centre. That definitely works best with the reflected symmetrical image of your daughter.
My vote is for #2. Great video Paul!

LOVE THIS! I should be able to do the adjustments in Affinity Photo and I am so glad you don't do 'manual' to death, I love Av mode for my cats too!
Thank you Marjorie - appreciate the support.
That's a nice one, if you have done one on Snapseed editing please let me know the link, if not done earlier I expect one from you.
