Why do you think there's so many failures with the Tristar chip? Do you think it's mostly bad quality chargers being used, or that the chip itself is inherently underspec for the job?
Given the persistence of the usage of this chip throughout their designs, I'm starting to lean towards more it being mostly driven by consumers using cheap 3rd party chargers?
I think he already gave the answer at the end of the video: bad chargers. However I disagree with blaming the user for using a bad charger. It's a user facing port that ultimately goes to USB. It is to be expected to be hooked to all kinds of nasty power sources. Input protection must account for that. It's not like Apple didn't try throwing filters and diodes at it (that in my limited experience have a high percentage of cold solder joints - so that may be the actual issue). Still Apple is to blame - not the customer for using 3rd party chargers. However bad they may be.
It really is the cheap chargers that blow them out but that can't be blamed entirely. I agree with Jonas that these devices should accept interference and dirty power much more than they do but there has to be a limit to that. A spike with high enough potential will always jump a gap, so even with protection in the phone, a charger that is REALLY bad can still toast the device. It seems like they are getting popped too easy though. I don't know how some of these chargers look inside but if they are using a transformer to step voltage down, the lack of smoothing caps and diodes could let enormous back spikes from a transformer loose into the phone. The Tristar IC seems to be very fragile..
You know that spark gaps are a thing, right? Apple got the number of outside facing contacts down to 8. Of course there is a limit to how much protection there can be expected. At the price point of Apple products how about this: black soot in the ports vicinity. It can reasonably be done and at that point the blame shifting game is trivial to decide.

you think it may be tri star ic on a 6 plus. my problem is the apple logo loop? black screen white logo goes away, phone shuts off then re appears when connected to power or when holding power and home button, also wont go to "plug into itunes display" i would miss my phone for a week but you seem incredible at what you do. im in Illinois so i dunno if i can drive to you. all OEM equipment. im second owner.

Thank you for sharing your work. I love puzzles like this and the odd ones I get keep me entertained for a hobby. One problem I've not been able to crack is when the apple logo comes up then goes off after about 10seconds and this loops forever. I just had an IP6 with this, the reset_1v8_l line gets pulled low (activated) which causes PMU to cycle thus causing a reboot. Have you ever resolved one like this? I think it's software corruption.

Received a dead iPhone 6s yesterday, not water damaged. I replaced battery and it powered on but drained extremely fast (about 1% per minute) and was not charging. I replaced tristar and it charges good now but only on a wall charger, and battery drains normally. When I try to connect to computer it doesn't charge and iTunes does not recognize the phone.
Have you had this ever happen to you? Do you think it's a bad tristar chip or possibly something else? I already tried a new charge port also.

Hi, I watched several videos regarding Tristar problems. My symptoms are different. I have only apple logo on Iphone 6s after power on. When I connect power cable and measure voltage on battery rails it show me 3,65 V which looks like no problems with Tristar. What do you think about it ? Do you have any suggestions ?

Really sorry for my English! I have done this change and at the beginning all worked fine. after 10 min of charging, the iPhone chrashed. So I took the lightning cable out, and turned on the phone again by powerbutton. After that, I plugged in the cable again and the phone crashed once more. Now it crashes all the time after put in the cable and it reboots. Maybe you know what the problem can be?

I have a 6s that i have put a new battery in and the battery drains so fast and after 1-2 minutes it will restart the phone (i tested this battery in another phone and it has no issues) do you think if i got the Tristar replaced in a phone kiosk this would fix my issue?

I have a 6s plus that doesn’t charge past 5% and constantly reboots randomly. Tried new battery, charge port etc but same. No water damage. Does this sound like it might be a tristar Repair?

How you know is the problem is Tristar IC . Hang on Apple logo . Means whats the produce to check it's Tristar IC prob or other like software and cpu

how much would it be to get it repair
my iphone 6s is in a bootloop with black screen and white apple logo. however when I plug it in with a usb to my pc or outlet it powers on to the app screen, I even restore it to factory settings. but soon as I switch it off with out charger plugged in it gets stuck in the bootloop. Itunes cant detect my iphone there is no charhing symbol it has appear briefy for a few seconds recently. my phone charges slowly when in standby though. any ideas

You only have to get them nearly 100% aligned and surface tension does the rest. It literally lines itself up.

Only recently picked up on your videos, very down to earth repairing if you know what I mean. Have you ever tried repairing off a camera only or would you say a microscope is the only way?
Thanks :) I did it using a lens that I pulled from an old projector for awhile. Then I used a cheap USB microscope to solder and the lens to verify my work. The work turned out really bad though. I was only soldering charge ports and other larger components back then but I didn't fully realize what I was missing until I got a microscope. I don't think there's any way I could do this volume of repairs without it. There's no way I could do long screw repairs without it. I'm planning to make a video pretty soon replacing touch ICs without a microscope just to see if I can do it.

It just doesn't go past the screen with apple logo and it switches off and on then again to apple logo and off and on n it continues this shit. Tried recovery but itunes says error 9 once it reaches to a point where it shows a horizontal bar and then it goes recovery mode with iTunes logo. HELP me to fix this iPhone 4s. Please help . One more when i remove the battery and plug in charger then too it's not getting on. I'm really sorry but this sounds very much like bad news. Unless everyone is wrong about the reason the phone is stuck trying to boot. If it is due to low storage, I don't know of a way around it. It really sucks that Apple does not give any options for recovering data.

I try to reball the tristar ic and it seem that it working. since this morning ( itlian time ) after that intervention the phone is working. but still i need to test it with in 72 hrs. before I can say that it already been repaired

That is most likely the Tristar IC but there's a good chance that it could be the dock connector or something else. I would try a new dock connector first.
