Geez learning so much from your channel after months of looking at hiking channels first time hearing about wind pants, rain kilts , gaitors etc Great channel!
Finally someone who does not only review, but makes dense and comprehensive comparisons. Thank you! This is the first of your videos I watched, but you got me hooked and i will watch many more. Do you have comparisons of Garmin inReach Mini 3.5 oz vs. Somewear 3 oz, RAVPower Deluxe vs. Anker PowerCore and Petzl Bindi 1.2oz vs. FireFly Ultralight Headlamp 1 oz? I wold appreciate that very much.
The tachyon have large enough leg opening for me to slide over my shoes. No need for a zipper. Also I found them to be be very durable for what they are. I wouldn't trek through brush in them...but probably wouldn't in the Dynamo either. For me... they serve the role of blocking wind... light rain...and bugs. I use leggings for warmth under them if it's windy. I'm sure either one will lead to a happy buyer
Nice review, and that's basically what I reasoned myself. I'm actually getting the Stretch UL from the Japanese site, because it had several of the features of the Dynamo but was even cheaper for me.
Montbell used to have a Dynamo wind jacket also. With the first one I had, the fabric developed transparent areas that eventually became holes. I sent it back to Mb and they sent me a new one which, after several outings, is doing exactly the same thing; the areas under my pack harness are "delaminating". Notice they don't offer the jacket anymore, only the pants. So, buyer beware.
Hi Bungzy, I thought that might have been the case too but it wasn't. Check the Mont Bell link here for the Dynamo wind pants and under the features it says they come with "Elasticized waist with draw string". I guess they must have changed it since you got yours. www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?cat_id=25048&p_id=2305123&gen_cd=1 Really enjoy your 2 minute tips. Keep 'em coming!
Ahhhh! Now I see! Thanks for clearing that up. I thought the pair you showed had a fly zipper. I wore the Dynamo's yesterday and they were great. Thanks again for your very informative reviews.
Thanks for the comparison. Do you still feel like these are the best lightweight pant option? BTW I can’t find the Houdini’s anywhere in regular sizes. How would you compare rain shedding between the Montbell and patagonia houdini?
Breathability I own the wind shirt in the 7D and the 12D I would say there is a 5 degree difference on a cool day maybe. If I was choosing one or the other I would consider the heavier one for winter/early spring? That being said the durability is definitely a factor...I would say that Montbell’s 12D is 3x tougher than the 7D
Hi Bungzy...Many ultralight hikers use the Tachyon pants as their rain pants. I know they aren't technically waterproof, but do the Dynamo pants have the same water repellant specs as the Tachyon pants. I couldn't find any info on Montbell's website.
Hey Bungzy you tried the Omm Kamleika pants? 190g, 4 way stretch, 20hh, 20 g/m2 ...don't know the hh or g/m2 of Dynamo, Montbell didn't seem to have it on their site. Edit: also Ultimate Direction Ultra Pant v2 @ 117g, HH 30k, g/m2 30k
Pretty good advice not getting the Tachyon for backpacking. From their description "done in a day", it doesn't look like they were intended for backpacking. Nice pants for racing though.

These are great, and I swear you are getting better at them, keep up the good work. :)

Was considering both of them..thanks for the review dude..
Could you remind me which hiking pants you liked. You said they had a draw string at the waist!!! Thanks ahead of time!!!
I just got my Dynamo pants and they didn't come with a zipper. It doesn't say they come with a zipper on the Mont Bell website.

Maybe i missed it but any thoughts on breathability?

Great video! Any thoughts on how these compare to the Houdini wind pants?
Are you in Arkansas saw the shirt
Great review. Subscribed.
Nice review, thanks.
Interesting, although I've yet to hear a single, bad, post thru-hike review about them.
Thank you!

They've discontinued the tachyon pants.
