Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.
One day, a talented and powerfu general named Ling Bu Yi comes to the town - and falls in love with her at first sight. He resolves to marry her, even though it will cause him no end of problems if he decides to pursue this union. She also warns him that she doesn’t trust him, and that her stubborn personality might not be suitable for the wife of a general. @@cindylian3345 in China you take your in laws as true family, so it doesn't necessarily mean the Empress meant both to be bio children. If Niao Niao is her daughter, then her husband is taken as a son to the family.

The Empress really loved Zisheng and naio naio . I was heartbroken when she wished they could be her children in the next life and she would live longer and Zisheng would look after her , what a happy life that would be .
I love the two queens in this series! There's not evil plot or drama. They understand each other and work hard to create harmony in the palace. I especially like Queen Yue, she doesn't take any BS from anyone and is a confident person. I love her scenes.

As strong as queen Yue she cried many secret tears, almost as much as the empress did. The only happy person in the palace was the emperor, but it was hell for the women in the harem. The women could not display their true feelings. The empress knew she was not loved by the emperor, snd she saw it in his behaviour. His true love was the queen.

It's refreshing to see this, after watching Ruyi's Love in the Palace, where, except for Ruyi, everyone was plotting against each other and sadly, so many children died in the struggle.

@@cookie9841 I believe their was a plot where their child was murdered and some bad official wanted the two of them to believe they killed each other child to cause chaos in the palace but they never believed it.
The way Empress Xuan reaches out to Zisheng as he enters her chambers, the way Zisheng rushes to take her hand in his and kneels by her bed, the way she tenderly touches his face and later wipes away his tears, the love between these two is palpable! Her dying wish is that he and Shaoshang would be her children in her next life and that she “ could live several years longer so that you can take care of me and live happily all year long. That’s what I call a perfect life. ❤️”. Loved this scene!
I loved how Huo Buyi raced to save Shaoshang from his obsessed admirer. He held onto the blade of the knife while bleeding to keep Shaoshang from being cut, that showed his love. When he and Shaoshang hung from the cliff and he said to her, if you live I live if you die I die, that was so awesome and showed the depth of his love! I was so sad that Shen'an died. She was one of the few that has ever shown Shaoshang true love. Great episode!

The mother said that it was Zishengs fault that Niao Niao spent five years in the palace . But Niao Niao was thinking about all the cruel ways her mother treated her in that scene when the palace gates closed. The mother is a piece of work 😣
Also, Shaoshang said she is doing it to show loyalty, not filial piety, just like her mother showed loyalty to the crown instead of her child, so it's not about Zisheng.

She believes everything she did for NN is for NN’s good, even when NN pointed out that it hurts her when she does those kinds of things. SMDH mother just hears ‘please abuse me more’
Never would it ever cross her mind that NN prefers to be w a mother figure who loves her, supports her and treats her kindly. She reprimanded NN a couple of times but always in a loving way instead of just degrading NN
His abandonment broke her beyond words tho. Shaoshang didn't choose her family, she didn't choose her parents nor could she do anything about how her mother treated her. But in her heart, she chose Huo Buyi. She gave her love to to him and made herself vulnerable, she opened herself up to him. Only for him to not reciprocate and choose to abandon her without caution. She never really recovered from that. But you're right too, he wasn't the only one at fault for her locking herself away in the palace. If her mother had been as kind and caring as Empress Xuan, shown her that she loved her no matter how or she was, Shaoshang would've never left her family. She's loyal to a fault. Ultimately, all her loved ones abandoned her or misunderstood her or underestimated her, and so she turned away and gave her time and energy to the one person who treated her with love, respect and kindness-Empress Xuan. Her death meant Shaoshang losing the only person who ever truly cared about her. This just hurts ahhh 😢

When Huo Buyi was talking privately with Empress Xuan, at 9:32 he actually refers to himself as "child" (孩儿). This is how a son/daughter would refer to themself when talking to their parent. He's basically acknowledging the Empress as his mother😭

Huo Buyi Zisheng was raised in her palace.
Empress Xuan had always said that she always did what everyone wanted her to do. I felt as though her last words were her way of finding freedom for herself at last. She had them hidden in her heart for years and was finally able to let it all go. The heartbreaking part was when she expressed gratitude for the Emperor but asked to not meet again in the next life. He had been good to her but never experienced true love in her marriage. She also did not desire to live a life of royalty but a common life where she is free to express herself and not be restricted to rules. Loved her character 🌺

Some people's first reaction was "if they're both her children, they can't be together". But actually, even if she were the mother-in-law to either, she would still count as "mother" in Chinese culture. And since Zisheng actually grew up in her palace as her adopted son, mother-in-law is what she was supposed to be to Shaoshang anyway. And what an amazing mother-in-law, to shut up all drama mean mothers-in-law, she would have been. That's even more heartbreaking.

This episode is gripping with emotion, but the most compelling was when Huo Buyi was with the Enpress. I felt the reality that Buyi did not have a mother growing up, because the aunt who saved him lost her mind when her son Li died. In the same token, Shaoshang found the "mother" in the Empress, instead of her biological mother. These 2 tragic-ridden lovers have to navigate their way back to each other in the most painful and challenging way.
Funfact:the beautiful talented empress Xuan real name is Tong Lei,she is 42 yrs.she has acted lots of dramas as main role or support role.she was the immortal phoenix in blue whispers .am so moved by her acting so far that am definately going to binge watch some of her previous dramas.💙

Zisheng has been blessed with wondeful foster parents. They truly love and care for him.
My heart broke when the empress said that she hopes Ling buyi and shaoshang will be her own children in her next life so she can live longer and happy. The empress have been living a hard life with disappointing children and wishing for love from a husband. Although she had non she still remained a very generous and a forgiving person. One of the admirable and beautiful characters in this story. So glad she had shaoshang besides her during her last years and 🥺❤️ I guess this is most emotional episode!

Shaosheng told the same thing 5 years ago. Glad that, he got it now. Even if it took 5 years time. But it's still worth it. It was so touching that he still wears that string and made that bite marks obvious. 9:04, He finally promised to be honest with her and tell her everything. That's a relief 😌.

20:08 is probably one of the most heart-wrenching, romantic dialogue in this series. Its suppose to be serious but how Wu Lei delivered it was A++++++.
Empress has always been the mother for Shaoshang & Zishang which is impartial to any one of them.
Loved the way she told Zishang not to make Shaoshang understand his choices & behave nicely. This shows her true sincerity.
At last when she asked Zishang to forgive himself before everyone & asked Shaoshang to live her life fullest, not to compromise so that she can have a better life in the presence of all - made it clear to all that no one is allowed to pressurize them to spoil their mental peace.
Empress's wish to have a carefree life with healthy parents by her side & have Shaoshang,Zishang as her own children where there would be no Emperor in her next life - made it very heartbroken that she never could have a pleasant life here as empress but full of regrets. She has suffered a lot in silence while wearing a smile on her face & treating everyone generously. She never harmed anyone nor intended to. She has been the purest soul who suffered from the beginning.
Shaoshang might have been by her side for five years which her parents think of her shutting down from the outside world but the reality is Shaoshang felt the safest being with her. Empress might not be her birth mother but always understood her, cared for her, loved her the way she is & supported her when she left alone which were more than expected from her own mother.
Wish Empress didn’t have to die & could live a better, happy life with Shaoshang & Zishang far from the capital while watching their little babies playing around her......
After the queen died, it was even worse, because in history she was not buried with the emperor. She could only watch the concubine Yue and the emperor buried together in the tomb. More than 2000 years.
And at her funeral, the emperor also killed people from her family's influence and people who depended on her family. The TV series was not filmed.

I loved this empress. She was an amazing woman, mother, and some kind of loving stepmother for shaoshang
I just love this series. I've finally finished my ugly crying and can appreciate the wonderful acting skills from the entire cast. I live for these Chinese series whether it's historical or contemporary. They are so well made, very professional and skilled. Of the 40+ series I have watched, this is my favorite by far. Zhao Lusi and Wu Lei have become my favorite actors - not just Chinese actors, but favorite of all.
I first saw Wu Lei in "The Long Ballad" (loved it - that's now my 2nd favorite) and then I tried to watch Cross Fire, which I think looked awesome (had some amazing gaming scenes), but unfortunately very few of the episodes had English subtitles. I then watched "Fights Break Sphere" (found it as "Battle Through the Heavens" on TH-cam). Loved that one too, it had some amazing battle scenes and I loved that we watched him mature and grow through three years and watching him progress in his ability.
Zhao Lusi is in a league of her own. I have found and loved 7 series (including this one) with her. She always has an amazing chemistry with her male lead. She can be funny and make me laugh so hard, that I can hardly breathe. She can make me cry so hard, that my eyes ache. I saw a clip of her playing the Chinese zither (Guzheng I believe?) and she can sing.

I can't tell how much I love this series. The entire cast and crew deserve all the credit and praise the in the world. It takes a group effort to create this masterpiece. Huo Buyi and Empress moment was so heart wrenching to watch. Empress was a mother to Shaoshang. It’s sad to see Shaoshang loosing her mother. It’s sad Empress never got witness Shaoshang get married to Huo Buyi. I have always love the bond between Empress and Shaoshang. Empress was an awesome character in this drama. The holding of the hands between The Empress and her Emperor was so beautifully captured the hand and finger movements brought me to tears not just this particular masterpiece but also watching my parents do the same thing- as my mother kept holding my father’s hand for hours before he passed away- I have this beautiful photo of their hands captured together- I’m crying my eyes out again as I share this with you all!!

The empress was an excellent role model for Niao Niao and it’s hurts so much to see her go and she was my favorite character at that. She told how she couldn’t raise her children how she wanted them to be so she wanted to be there for Niao Niao which makes me so sad to see her go she was such a great person 😭😭. I’m glad that she can finally let go of her past and rest her head she will always be loved. I cried so much in this episode like this is by far the best funny, emotional, historical drama I have ever seen.🤧🤧

The dying scene was too hard to watch, you could feel the grief of everyone. Kudos to everyone that they convey the sorrow that they felt. Nice one but hard to bear the emotion flowing in the air. Everyone did their part tremendously. Congrats
This was by far the best episode, the queen passing away was one the best scenes I ever watched in any movie! These actors should be very proud of their work!

The empress was so pure…she loved those around her so purely and without guile…and she was, wholeheartedly, a mother to NN and HB that even to her dying breath, she had nothing but pure motherly love for them.

This was amazingly done, especially the goodbye to the emperor and the woman so many might see as just the competition. I have only watched a few palace dramas but hated the backstabbing and murdering of children as they tried to scratch their way to the top. These people aren’t perfect but they do have a healthy respect for each other and their relationship is beautiful. Able to write this now that I have stopped crying.

OMG the Empress' last words... I thought she was going to say she hopes they are together again in the next life but she said the opposite. Such brilliant writing and delivery, one little word meaning so much ("bie" = "don't/not"). She was grateful for him and that if it was her fate to marry the emperor, that at least she married a kind man. But she doesn't want to be his wife in the next life: she wants him and Yue Heng to be a happy couple again, and for her to be with someone else. She was never jealous in the way that she wished Yue Heng was never in the picture so she could have him all to herself; rather, she wished she never had to be a forced between them into a triangle, and could be just a normal wife and mother without the political pressure.
My tears can't stop following. Usually, when I watch dramas like this, I can't stand the Empress's character because usually, they are cruel and just plain evil. In this drama, this Empress was my favorite. Her character touched my heart. She was more than just an Empress. She was that mother figure character we wish we can see in more dramas or have in real life. She was sweet, kind, and a wonderful mother to Shaosheng. She was one of the best characters in this drama. There will never be another Empress character I like her. I gonna miss her.
This amazing show should come with a few warnings. You need to have beside you 10 boxes of tissues, your heart is going to be ripped to shreds and range of emotions that you feel watching this mesmerizing show are beyond compare.
There is not one person who has been cast that has not put in their heart and soul into their roles.
I can’t believe this is the last week of this amazing series! I’m really going to miss all the beloved characters that have become close to my heart over these past weeks. Believing that love will conquer all❣️

Its crazy how indifferent they have become throughout the ep's. They both love each other yet their own pride and stubbornness keeps them at a disagreement and in constant fight with each other. They both love each other but want to love each other their own way and not compromise with each other. They are both so controlling that is why their relationship is always in these constant state!!!!!!
Empress Xuan was one of the best characters in this drama. I adored the way her relationship developed with the FL. I was happy about the fact that she wasn't portrayed in any bad way, and that they really emphasized on her kindness. Her relationship with Yue Heng was unique and lovely, you don't see it very often between 2 characters of their station in other palace intrigue dramas. I love that they showed how much everyone respected her as the Empress to the very end. While I prepared myself early in the drama for her possible death, it still hurts. I don't like seeing kind characters die in dramas when they don't deserve it, and she definitely did not. But I think this is an acceptable ending for the character.
I’m sad and mad, sad that a wonderful Empress has passed. And mad that she made herself sick, by letting her depression consume her. She was loved by the Emperor, but she let a little bit of jealousy in her heart. And she let what her children did, taint her vision of how she raised them. She did nothing wrong but love too much, and got back nothing but anguish.
Didn’t know that the loss of another child added to her depression, I understand now why she chose not discipline them too much. But held a tighter rein on her heart, but what was heartbreaking was when she told the Emperor; “That may they never meet in a future lifetime”. I hope she finds happiness and piece in her new lifetime.
Empress : Yuan and Shaushang were never betrothed. Ling Buyi : I know. Empress : Shaushang still has you in her heart. Also Ling Buyi : I know that too.
😅 The arrogance, he made sure he left his mark on Shaoshang that no man compare to him
they went through a lot of intense experiences together, so maybe not out of arrogance but regret for stuffing up the relationship
The father just tickled me into fits of laughter with the bit about the coffin in the backyard still being there. 😂 Her mother knew it was a set-up as soon as he started. 🤣🤣🤣. Love how they work together.

Empress xuan and Yue are both stellar characters, i like how the writers didn't make one bad and the other good, it promotes nice unity, and an optimistic ideal of ppl can get along
I loved this series. Watched it 3 times. I hated how she was treated by her mother in the beginning. She is just adorable Watched her in other series. The chemistry they had together was amazing. How he looked at her made my heart race. Great love story. How they gradually developed this deep love for each other ..
The loss of the Empress for Shaoshang was another blow that pulled the "rug" from under her feet. From one emptiness into the next is hard to bear, and finally Shaoshang's legs gave way.
From all of the Empress's closest by blood Shaoshang was the only one allowed to touch the Empress to the very end.

this episode made me cry so much, empress passing away, NNs parents having the conversation with zisheng, it was heartbreaking, in a way those five years she was also punishing herself, she stood by the empress. All she wanted was some repentance on zhisheng's part, she wanted assurance he wouldn't abandon her. I get where zisheng was coming from, in order to revenge he ended up hurting that one person who was willing to stand by her 🥲
Well at least Madam Cheng was being open minded about their relationship 😊. We are on pins and needles watching these last few episodes 😂

I do not cry easily, however the passing of this beautiful soul had tears streaming down my face, I loved her character. Miss Luo finally showed her true colors from murdering her husband to trying to kill Shaoshang all for someone who NEVER EVER gave her any impression that he liked her let alone would marry her.

The Empress, as many in the LLTG TH-cam community have commented on, died very elegantly. She had the time to share her heart and last minutes with those she loved.
The Empress , I think shared with SS to marry and live life with the one you love, don’t settle and be miserable like she lived. So glad to hear she didn’t settle and marry YS. Although he was smart, handsome and rich, she ultimately was true to her own heart (would have liked to have seen how that came about).😢
The crazy Luo daughter’s role was to share with SS how miserable and near death the General was at the boarder. And another important key she left, was the importance of excepting both the good and bad in the person you love. After all, no one is perfect…not even our General. She was true to her crazy character and not only willing to kill others, but also herself for her crazy definition of love (please don’t follow her crazy thought process. You can’t make someone love you. In SS’s words, Girl, just let it go!)😮
The purpose of dragging SS out of the palace to her home, unconscious and soaking wet, when she has a room at the palace and access to physicians was for the General to be made aware by her parents how sick and near death she was when he abandoned her. He wasn’t the only one wanting to die and seeking death. 😢
Alright, enough tears, misery and death. Hopefully the last episodes will be dramatic and focused on the will to live life in it’s fullest! That was the last wish of the Empress for SS, HBY and the viewing audience. ❤

Everyone is exhausted in this episode, they all grow and start to understand their mistakes.
I’ve never cried so much in a Chinese series before. This episode was just having my tears flow like a river. The Queen was indeed Shaoshaong’s mother figure that’s why she wanted to be close to her even till the end. The Empress was truly the most admiring and reserved character in this series. She really was spreading peace amongst her children and to everyone within the kingdom.
Love the scene with buyi and the empress. She loves and cares for him and shaosheng so much. He thinks he hurt her heart but she was really just depressed because of her marriage and her dissapointing kids
what a great acting.. love this series . after very long time i have given my time to ay series. n still love it with every episodes. not a single scene was there when it looks boring or less or overacting. whether its a big or small actor .. their acting is just awesome. love it..love from india..
Shaoshang's mother said the reason for her to stay at the chingqui palace was huo buyi, but if you think about it, shaoshang's parents were also one of the reasons among many, it's not his fault alone !!!

Wow what an emotional episode I bloody balled my eyes out, Shen'an dying speech was so long I forgot she was dying bahahaha 😂 Shaoshang is so heart broken 💔😭😭 was great seeing all the Royal family together as one and the 5th Princess finally showing remorse 👏👏 for me I want to see Huo Buyi and Shaoshang finally together. Only 3 more episodes roll on I will definitely be watching this one again.
Wow! Amazing acting skills each and every actor's. As viewers, we are also develope the feelings along with the charectors. It's worth to watch this drama. Amazing castings, direction, editing. But alas! This journey gonna be end.
When the empress passed away I cried 😭😭 . I can't even breathe.... I felt pain..... I've never felt like this for any movie or series....I've been watching Chinese Korean thai japanese drama for nearly five years. I've never cried like this. It's a great masterpiece Every actor/actress played their character well.Not only main character Each character has its meaning and their place in the series. It's show's the all kind of love in the series like love between the main character, love between parent and children, love between general and soldiers, etc..... This drama clearly shows romance love, comedy, suspense, patriotism,action, loyalty, life lessons etc. I've never write comments like this. It's my first time writing a very long comment......
Guys the cliff is a magical place for the two it's where they'll always fall in love ❤️
Sorry. Off topic. I love how they reassure us that no animals in the cliff falling scene were harmed. That they were CG and animal props. Not many show/movies take the time to let the public know. Sometimes you just have to hope for the best.
I'm satisfied to watching Zishang is regretting and in too much pain with heartbroken not to take seriously Shoshang's words.

Sad to see Empress Xuan not making it to the end. She was a great character indeed, and glad there were no twists between her and Concubine Yue for the throne and Emperor 's love for them.

This whole series was awesome, I have never watched an series like this. It's truly a masterpiece even in an another language. I love this TV series, I felt all kind of emotions. Happy, Sad, cried my eyes at every episode, angry, butterflies, heart racing. My goodness if there's an international award I would vote for this show and actors. ❤ 😍 💖 ❣ 💕
