Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.
One day, a talented and powerfu general named Ling Bu Yi comes to the town - and falls in love with her at first sight. He resolves to marry her, even though it will cause him no end of problems if he decides to pursue this union. As far as myself and my friends are concern this movie should really won and international Oscar award. In terms of Asian awards every actor and actress on the set of this movie should win an award. They are fantastic. There two people whom I will give serious personal awards are Lin Buyi body guards. Those two Gi and the other one are marvellous in intelligence gathering, protecting their master and doing everything possible to see that their young master was ok. They never left his side

What I love most about this drama is that the writers and the directors weren't afraid to have niao niao love interests show their emotional side. For once even the men cried. "BRAVO and Well done ".
I tell you what, I wish more directors would allow their male characters to fully emote and cry when they should because it hits deep. I feel a much better connection to a character who weeps when they're sad or overjoyed, be it male or female.
Right. Even the most stoic person should be allowed to cry. Men are people too, with emotions just like everyone else.

In those times, I don’t think men in reality were allowed to cry because they would be considered weak like a woman because in those days, women were considered weak no matter their physical strength.
The dialogue between Huo Buyi and Yuan is satisfying, 2 men in love with 1 woman but still can talk calmly without insults. They have grown too, compared to the beginning of the series
This drama is so educative and shows you what "love" truly means, it shows you that live is more than the feelings but it's more of action. The film shows you about the things couples should really do, talk and work towards in order to gave a good marriage. This is what courtship is about.

Oh really. Her love was true. His was not from the beginning. I enjoyed this movie till the night before the wedding. I watched it to the end and decided that I had wasted a good deal of time in seeing how hateful people can be. Tell me where did the revenge get them. Where has revenge gotten anybody. No where but more revenge.

Wrong. This drama shows unhealthy, obsessive, posessive behavior that has nothing whatsoever to do with real love. It puts an abused girl who was abandoned for 15 years by self-absorbed military parents, into the clutches of a self-absorbed career military man who had NO problem flatly abandoning her for another half a decade. She has spent LITERALLY 20 years of her life totally abandoned by military people. Dude wants to posess her, but he doesn't give one single care for her needs, her wants, her wishes, her wellbeing. She could as well be a painting or vase he liked to buy. She needs to marry someone who actually cares about her wellbeing, and can spend time with her instead of expecting her to understand why she's being abandoned yet again. I wish the idiot writers would let her marry and find happiness with someone who's actually going to give her a GOOD life.
At first I didn't want to watch this drama because it had many episodes but I feel like they could have made it to 100 episodes because it was worth watching 😭😭😭 general huo and ss did there best.. let me just say the entire crew did a marvelous job🤝🤝🤝.

The thing I love about this episode is that our favorite couple finally got a chance to talk. They finally got everything off their chest that they had been holding in for 5 years. Even though it was heartbreaking and they are separating for a while. It's good that they were finally able to talk and tell each other their feelings. I also love that Niao Niao got to talk to her mother. After everything she's been through these past couple of episodes, she needs her mother more than ever. Plus, this episode shows how much Niao Niao has grown up throughout her journey in this drama. She went from an immature child to a mature lady throughout her journey in this drama.
I agree that the mother talking to Niao Niao and acknowledging some of the mistakes she made is good but her explanations/justifications fell a bit short. Right from the beginning she had no trouble differentiating how to treat the cousin with compassion and empathy as a daughter compared to subordinate troops. Likewise, she repeated ignored warnings and advice about her heavily biased and poor behavior towards her daughter and the predictable consequences. It is easier to forgive someone when they fully acknowledge not only their mistakes but maturely demonstrate a deeper understanding of the long term consequences of their actions without shying away from responsibility and accountability by claiming ignorance.
Besides some of the cultural features, I feel the problem was that every time Niao Niao behaved in a way the mother disliked, it was a case of unrealistic expectations. This is born of a refusal to recognise and respect the positive qualities and merits already possessed by her daughter, including some character traits similar to her own or those acquired to ensure survival, and her right to independant thought. There was also a reluctance to recognise or be confronted with the evidence of her own inability to meet her responsibilities whilst demanding her daughter do so without any support. Worse still was her awareness of the lack of duty of care from those under whose guardianship she left her daughter, then using that suffering to her personal advantage, all of which compounded the original abandonment issues. This evidence made denial of culpability impossible at a subconscious level and difficult at a conscious one which consistently manifested in highly reactive cruel and aggressive behaviours.
The character development of the mother wasn't linear. The few times there seemed to be an improvement in the mother/daughter dynamic the mother would swiftly revert to her default tyrannical setting painfully intensifying the contrast in the aunt/niece dynamic. When the mother finally wanted to make up for 20 years of neglect, disrespect and lost time it was too late to pick up where she left off. Rather, she needed to respect the alternative supportive relationships Niao Niao built with the empress and others to fulfill this need even if it meant they permanently replaced her as a mother figure, role model or confidante. She also needed to invest energy in building a functioning relationship from scratch of a nature and at a pace that respected Niao Niao's needs.
Despite his merits, her father was overall too inconsistent and his loyalties pulled in too many directions to be what Niao Niao truly needed in the brief period the family lived together. Upon leaving the palace, although Niao Niao overheard the grandmother acknowledged her own harmful behaviour, it isn't the same as a the direct acknowlegement that unreserved reconcilliation often requires especially between parties with a large difference in power or authority. This is one of the reasons that crimes perpetrated by people in positions of trust or authority like family, teachers doctors, priests and police are considered to be especially heinous.
Nioa Niao had enough self respect to set boundaries on what behaviour she would tolerate from others and to hold them to account as well as being accountable herself. Her vengence was never unprovoked nor would I consider it disproportionate or excessive. Even when she became resigned to unchanging persecution and dropped all expectation for fair or humane treament she still showed compassion and gave opportunities for people to redeem themselves. The fact that Huo Buyi demonstrated full recognition and acknowledgement that the depth of his betrayal corresponded to the degree of trust he was given, and completely accepts Niao Niao's right to choose, was his and the relationship's saving grace.
Life experience has taught me that, regardless of biology, a parent is someone who fulfills that role in your life. I also know what it is like when family use other family members as a weapon to manipulate others for their own benefit. Love, trust and respect are all things that are mutually earned and maintained, and are not automatically restored by forgiveness. Once destroyed it takes time to build new emotional bonds that make love endure, relationships can't be forced by someone's need to be forgiven. It takes time for people to break long established patterns of behavior even if they are truly remorseful.

@@Q3shara yeah, perhaps this essay on the character's psychology might have been worded a bit less like an academic article given the context, but I agree with your analysis. At the end of the day, the mother's choices all along always put herself first, never Shaoshang. Whatever was her motivation, shifting between duty as a mother, duty to her family, guilt over abandoning her daughter and missing out on her upbringing, duty towards Yangyang, fear of consequences etc., it was always about herself. Even when she started being jealous of the empress, or when she ignored Shaoshang's accomplishments, dismissed her love for Lou Yao, blamed her for Zisheng's proposal, everything, really, she only ever looked at Shaoshang from the outside. And yet she's a smart woman, and Shaoshang was pretty outgoing from the first time she saw her. The problem was that, at the end of the day, Mom was only thinking about herself. Even in this scene, now, that she's so sorry and regretful and only wants to atone, she's so hopeful for a sign of enjoyment from Shaoshang for just a piece of cake, and when Shaoshang doesn't just smile and forget all her pain, Mom's face falls and she's disappointed. That's so self-centered. Niao Niao ended up having to make her feel better. Again.
Shaoshang is amazing at everything; she never needed anything from anyone except genuine caring. She only really got that from the empress. Everyone else in her life who gave her hope for it, disappointed spectacularly. No wonder her interest in human relationships is shattered.

Zisheng's pained smile at 8:48 broke my heart. He deserves another chance. Even shaoshang is in pain but she still refuse to forgive him and the sad part is, it's fair on her part as well because she was hurt by him in the most painful way to her. I guess this is what makes the story more dramatic, meaningful and beautiful than those light hearted love stories. More realistic.
Also love how they gave closure to Yuan shanjian's unrequited love. He himself agrees that LBY is more worthy of her love.
The background music is fantastic. adds a different intensity and beauty to each scene. ❤️
I felt really bad for Yuan Shanjian throughout the series, he was one step too late in making his confession to NN and from that point on he really had no chance with her. She had her illfated puppy love in the beginning with Yao and then she had her deeper love with LBY that was unbreakable even if it was strained beyond measure, she never left any room for another love to enter after their long parting.

She's perfectly in character: she never needed anyone, she's perfectly capable of taking care of herself and she grew up learning the hard way that in this life people talk about feelings and family and love and puppies, but she could only ever count on herself. Her mother came and confirmed that observation. Zisheng came and forced her to accept him and open her heart to him, and what did he do? Lied about every single thing of himself, promised her the world, and then went off to die alone just before the wedding. What's not realistic is that she would ever take him back after spending five whole years just fine without him. She doubted she even knew him before, now he's become a whole different person, so what's left to salvage?
When Zisheng and Shaoshang said their final goodbyes, Zisheng was walking away and then he held on to the door, it showed on his face the agony of leaving Shaoshang. I can almost feel his heartache and Shaoshang was also in pain. This scene made me cry with them. 😢😢😢

im glad with how the Empress passed. and thank you for keeping it at the end where i don't have to suffer much like Yanxi palace and have half a series without the iconic empress. Empress passed with harmony in sadness, noone fought or objected to Shaoshang sitting right next to the empress even if her own children sat far. the way the Emperor guides her to come closer just shows how much they love her.

I cried when the Grandmother was talking to the maid she realized about the past and when Niao Niao heard it wow. Grandma did a great job. She makes you laugh, cry. Glad she realizes her mistake
I watched it again, and cried again. The reason I go back to this drama is because it's worth it. The new ones has to much nonsense. Cheating, blackmail and other things. This has love, respect, morality, honesty and support. Beautiful 😍❤️. Will always watch it. Thanks for making such a great drama. Also love the little bits of the matrix in the battles.
There are films one does not grow tired of it because they contain great depth, and one is enriched by them. I agree about the new drams, they are more mainstream productions="too much nonsense in them". By now I have watched it several times and each time is as watching it for the first time. The effect does not fade!

I usually don't like drama's where it take the main leads forever to finally get together, it drives me crazy, but with this drama even though it took them so long to get together and then they broke up, I am still hooked. It was the first drama that 20 minutes into the first episode and I was in tears, this is probably the best drama I have ever watched and will probably stay the best drama I have ever watched for a long time.

You will be happy to know that they will be in another project together called "The Last Immortal" aka Hidden God (2023) filmed last winter. Zhao LuSi is the female lead and but not Li Yunrui, who plays the second male lead. But nonetheless, I can't wait!

My highlight in this episode is when they finally show us the strength and skills of the black armored guards. Well trained and skilled in any fight even if it was an ambush and why they are the most feared soldiers in this drama. Well choreographed fight sequence I had goosebumps 👏
I just hate how everyone around niaoniao changed her into a entire different person, she was lively, bubbly, naughty but what happened? It made me cry so much. And ling buyi was one of the main reason who changed her, if he's so determined from the beginning to avenge huo clan then why he involved niaoniao to his life. He shouldn't have done that to her. She gave him all her heart but still he hide everything about him and abandon her.
This❤❤❤and people are calling her self centered and selfish. Everyone around her just kept hurting her, except for the empress. If I'm hurt so much how can I trust or give anyone my heart
I think they wanted to show, how circumstances change a person. But i do wish she retained some of her open-ness and " Tinkerbell" Energy.. 😢 it hurts to see her not building anything.
To me Buyi still thought he had a chance to do his revenge "properly", it's just that all throughout his journey, the people he wanted to capture kept being killed by his uncle. Even when he was plotting without telling anything to Niao Niao, it was to protect her but he wasn't planning on abandoning her.The death of Peng Kun and his aunt were his last straw, he lost it completely. I don't think the slaughter was part of his original plan, but at this moment he got to such a dark place, even the love he shared for Niao Niao couldn't heal him. I'd compare it to someone with depression and dark thoughts, even when surrounded by loved ones, the dark thoughts overshadow everything.
Niao Niao being so composed and unfazed in these last episode is more because of her sadness and heartbreak rather than her personality changing. I hope they get back together and if they do, she'll regain her bubbly self, he never wanted for her to change.

This is the perfect drama, the best acting, Wu Lei can convey EVERYTHING with his eyes alone; Zhao LuSi embodies SSC perfectly. Everyone from cast to crew was perfect. After more than a year, I keep coming back and the queen passing scene still makes me cry 😢like the first time. Thanks to everybody involved in the creation of this beautiful and amazing masterpiece ❤❤❤❤
leo wu and zhao lusi did this drama justice and i think i speak for everyone when i say they should (if they aren't) give themselves a chance in a real relationship. there chemistry together is epic onscreen and bts.

He is a great actor. To date or not, to date each other off screen. It is not our place. We don't know Chinese culture and their country. What is allowed. They can lose their jobs, too.
the way the mother-daughter relationship is handled in this show is so good, it's made me cry more than anything else in this show. I'd say it might be equally or perhaps even more interesting than niaoniao and zisheng's relationship

Mom being nice at first probably scared NiaoNiao, but it seemed they at last have some peace between them. Yuan Shenjian is a good person, he deserves his own happiness for being so good to NiaoNiao when she needed help, without expectations. Maybe Grandmother can come to terms with NiaoNiao as well

This has been so beautifully acted and scripted. The harmonies and disruptions in the relationships so feelingly expressed. The Empress became the mother that Naio Naio should have had. Her own longed for mother returns and is an unfriendly stranger. It is sad and it reflects life because things like that do happen to people. Zhao Lusi and Zeng Li have been perfect in the daughter-mother roles and given a perfect performance of the intricacies of their situation.

I really love your expression on this matter but it also shows that sometimes just by chance one can find a mother that is not really your biological mother but repaid the empress but looking after her for five years but I find significant is how the empress entrusted her to scatter the ashes of her to the town she originally came and she also wished that Naio Naio and General Huo wu Shang could be her children in her next life and I think those gestures was amazing to watch. Beautiful script writing or shall say adaptation from the original novel.

From beginning to end I looked for the right words to describe this drama but still failed to express it. All I can say it’s the best I ever watched and no one can ever measure up to their work. Actors and actresses, directors, all the crew excellent work you deserve all the awards you can get for this year and the coming year. Hope for more excellent productions like this. They keep us up at night just imagining how is the next episode going to be. Have cried, laughed most because of the Cheng family and the emperor who never stops😂😂😂😂😂, been on tension what more can I ask for thank you.

Technically, she's also not wrong. The sun is a star. So, men & women are neither superior or inferior. This drama has one of the most beautiful plots, and not only about romantic love. The 'mother-daughter' relationships here are the most heart-warming yet gut-wrenching in any C dramas.
That closure scene between HBY and CSS. HBY's eyes say it all. CSS has had time to grief and "move on", whereas HBY still was holding on to hope.

Wish the drama continued to be more similar to the novel, niao niao is actually very amazing. she didn't follow any dumb / evil woman into traps and didn't need to be saved, she was able to save herself and resolve things. she became strong! the drama is great, but she needs saving everyday, doesn't really show how strong and logical she's become. she became conservative and careful and did everything very proper and gave up on her fun hobbies.

Well, she knew something was up as soon as she got there. She was questioning the lack of guards, the clothes she was wearing, who was going to be seated at the spare table. SS should have dropped the bomb about being invited to the town in Yao’s name though because that might have changed what was to follow( not really because it wasn’t in the script lol). She’s asking why they are going to the ancestral hall when really they should be going to a birthing room so she’s not dumb at all it’s just the script writers not letting her show her abilities 😤.
I haven’t read the novel. The second time she got into a carriage with another woman that did not like her I was thinking, girl, fool you twice, shame on you.

It's not Shaoshang parents fault for leaving her behind when she was little. It was the fault of the Grandmother and madam Ge . The only fault that Shaoshang's mother has is that, she didn't show her love and affection after their unite after 15years instead she treated her harshly.
Hou buyi also grew up with hatred and ego of revenging his family and Gu city,so it was difficult for both of them to rely or trust eachother because of their childhood trauma,😪😪and when Hou buyi jumped off the cliff,he did that in order not to implicated her and her family but she counted it as abandoning and find it difficult to forgive him 😞😞

I still think that partially it was parent’s fault. They left behind the daughter instead of the twin brother. The grandmother would probably treat the grandson much better even if there was scheming by Madam Ge. Probably would have spoiled him, but treatment would have been better then Niao Niao.
The separation and meeting 5 yrs after made them both grow up and out of the tragic sphere they were both in, but obviously it's a long road before they get together. It's still not a peaceful time in the nation.

Girls were considered as delicate, and boys will be raised to be tough, they are supposed to protect the ladies in their family. Ladies should be pampered, that's the mindset in Asian culture. This is why they decide to take the boys with them and leave the girls at home. Because they go to the border not to have fun but to defend the nation. They are going to war anytime and even when there is no war to expect. The north border has a very harsh and rough condition.
Living there is not only hard because of the lack of necessities but it is also hard on climate. If they could choose... means, if there is a mansion in the capital with family members that they could trust and they had to make a choice which kids to leave cos it's not possible to bring them all for this or that reason, then it's more reasonable to leave the girls in the capital.
Especially since they surely expect their girls to learn how to be a gracious lady and has good contacts, literate aka educated... then staying in the capital is better for the girls.
The mistake was made only because they had judged persons wrongly and didn't expect the sister in law would be that evil and let her greed/jealousy to get the best out of her and mistreat their daughter to that level.
They know that the mother in law is a simpleton and fond of money, but they didn't expect her to be that greedy.
Niao2's mother always sent money generously all those years. All the rewards from the emperor would be sent home, they might only live on salary in the border.

I can only say that ShaoShang would never be ShaoShang if she didn't grow up in surcamses that she was in. And she would never meet any of three the man... And she would never survived the attacks in the palace...
So... when you think about yourself and asking why... why... why... you have to know that you are created the way that you are so you can survive and blosam.

Niao Niao’s mother’s apology doesn’t do it for me. She talks about how she got up at 5 am to make snacks, just for Niao Niao and still makes it all about her. Then she said she didn’t know how to be a mother to a daughter yet she was to Niao Niao’s cousin. Then she gives other excuses with her apology. Just seemed superficial and still narcissistic. Side note: I really hope YS finds his soulmate.
You need to be more forgiving. Remember that we are talking about a different cultural background than the Westerners have. She acknowledged her mistakes and she tries to build a better relationship with her daughter. This is more important. I prefer an imperfect character than having these perfect characters who do everything right. I mean this is why I feel I enjoyed so much this show. All the characters were flawed.

the scene with huo buyi and yuan made me feel flamboyant. they spoke like two grown men with respect to each other even though they both loved the same woman. huo buyi knew the pain and hurt he inflicted on the love of his life, although he didn't want her or her family to be implicated for his revenge, but now he would do anything to wipe away the hurt she feels and SY loves her because she is the only one who would not shy away from competing and challenging him no matter what even though she isn't a scholar. she is cut from a unique material from the other women and she owns it with grace, but he will never own her heart. both men love her and want her to be happy, so whosoever she chooses they will be ok with it, because no matter what the other will still be there for her.
This is my third time watching this series and each time I'm still hooked on the story and acting. It's just superb, chef's kiss. The agony in their eyes of their final goodbyes.

I've now watched this drama 4 times completely. It's incomparable! I only started being interested in Chinese dramas last year ('22). In the search for captivating shows, this one hooked me in the first 15 minutes. I waited every week for the episodes to release and was never disappointed. Amazing all the way through. And I've seen many of these actors in other productions but never as good as in this one. Yuan Shen was the best at facial expressions. His love for Niao Niao was always written on his face because he could never really speak it so it was very poignant. This scene between Huo Buy and him was full of closure as was the whole drama. So well done.
For a second at 31:52 it felt like zisheng and yuan would make a great pair 😂😂

This has been a great drama with so much action.! The fight scenes were so realistic. Huo Buyi trusts his Black Guard Army so much that he can sit and watch them fighting until he just has to fight! So many confessions, but Shaoshang's mother's confession was somewhat confusing. She said she did not know anything but raising boys, as to why she treated Shaoshang unfairly, but she knew how to treat Yang Yang who is a girl! Lou Li has let her hatred of Shaoshang fester for years and it surfaced as her trying to kill Shaoshang. Can't wait for the next episode and for Shaoshang to forgive Huo Buyi!

The excellent background music; The highly professional and accomplished Director Fei Zhen Xiang; The wonderful television couple of the protagonists, Wu Lei and Zhao Lu Xi, with the awesome and unique chemistry between them; The great cast of actors as a whole; I honestly don't know what to distinguish and what to first admire! Well done to All who worked to Produce this Epic, Masterpiece Series that will go down in the annals of Television Production History! Such love and Globally now, another Series and another TV Couple of Protagonists, a Couple with a great appeal to the Public like Lei-Lei and Lucy, will not exist again, at least in the short Future! Personally, the scene in the 6th episode when Chi Sheng/ Ling Bu Yi, sees the face of Shao Shang for the first time and is dazzled, is the first of my most beautiful scenes in the Series! Especially Chi Sheng's highly romantic words "Love forever at first sight" make me "melt like wax" as we say! It is also the scene of the marriage proposal, in the 24th episode where Chi Sheng says that for him there is no other woman better in the World! Another woman to be innocent and brave together! A woman who loves and hates with the same passion! And when he says that he will never marry another woman in his life but Shao Sang, there I literally "turn off"!!! But what a shame that this couple that we loved so much, from what it "seems", does not maintain even the basic friendships relationships! The general TV Audience and Worldwide now, loved and adored them more through this Epic Series! They probably don't realize that if they are at least friends and not just in "words", it will give satisfaction to the Audience and encouragement to continue, deservedly, supporting this excellent Couple with the unrepeatable Talent in Acting! My heart breaks for Yuan Shanjian. He loved her for many years. One thing I couldn’t understand about shaosheng. She could forgive her mother and grandmother for their mistakes of 15 years. But couldn’t forgive zisheng, who is so repentful that he himself thinks that he is unqualified for her and she shouldn’t firgive him. He is so ashamed that he stays away from her and protects her quitely. No matter what he deserves a chance.
Because she's still in a deep frozen depression. It's easier to just not "feel" when one is in that state. I think SS figured she could go through life like that. It took a literal explosion of a fire to melt her frozen heart...as you'll see :).

I actually understood her. She never knew her parents and she knew the character of her grandma. The general on the other hand worked so hard to melt her defenses.
