Random fun fact: The whistle used in the movie, and on the model it seems, comes from Sierra Railway #3. The number 3 also played as the C.P. #131 in Back to the Future part 3. On a side note: i hope Lionel or MTH comes out with a model of #3. I think it would be cool.
This is actually still highly debated. It’s believed that the 3’s whistle was used on Polar Express, but Railtown 1897 volunteers still dispute that it was used on Polar Express based on the fact that Sierra 3 was in pieces for restoration at the time of production. While it certainly could be that whistle being run on air or on another locomotive, the chances of it being another Lima 5 chime seem more likely.
@@OutaTimeFPV every official thing i've found on the subject said that it was #3's whistle, but who knows. I would believe they put it on another locomotive for it since it was being restored. The director of The Polar Express was also on the team for BTTF3 so he new about the #3. I don't want to start an argument, every where i go and see someone mention this it turns into a flame war.
@@Railfan105. oh yeah, no intentions of starting an argument. It is strange though that none of the staff at Railtown remember what whistle was used. We may never really know, but it certainly is a Lima 5 chime that sounds a lot like 3.
Fun photo fact: the Rivets on the bottom of the tender frame are flashing and stroking, so they seem to either stand still. And also move backwards even though the tender is actually moving forward!!!!
I have the starter set version from the 1st generation of the set made by Lionel. In 2005, I got the train set for my birthday and over the years, added on cars and already got 10 coaches, including one that I made once
Enjoyed this 😊 and the comments just added more steam to my interests to be "stoked" about it with each steam chug, whistle blast, bell ring, clickity-clack and train fact, train in motion, now you must know I'm all fired up for Eric's NEXT video, PJR
Not an expert on steam train designers but I heard the real polar express was based off a Lima Locomotive Works “Mikado” and that nerd with the glasses says it’s a Baldwin loco works “Berkshire” I have my doubts
I wish Lionel based the engine more on the movie than the real locomotive. With a recessed headlight, lack of numbering, no water heater, correctly placed whistle, white lettering instead of gold, black rods instead of silver, and the Sierra railway #3 whistle. This model is more like the actual Pere Marquette 1225 locomotive.
It's based on the real thing because its a very expensive high end model. I think the less expensive entry level set they make is based a little more on what's in the movie.
@@Ericstrains ik its based on the real thing, but it just makes it a bit less worth it when you realize this, and the legacy pere marquette 1225 are practically the same thing. I think if they really want to make this a legacy Polar Express, they should make it as movie accurate as possible.
@@LarryDickmann i have a couple prewar pieces i want to refurbish. Menards has some affordable goodies but yea the barrier to entry rising will be the undoing
I really wish could find one of those for less than 5K$$$ everyone is asking for the. I'd like to pay like 1500-1800$ which sounds reasonable for a legacy steam loco.. No way are the worth more than my original 700e...

Well it is true on one note the whistle is Lima 5 chime from the shay division
In some scenes you can see the cab has a flux capacitor in it
Now make it drift on ice
Impossible at this point but maybe in a few years
Nice Pan Am boxcar in the background I love Pan Ams scheme

This train is amazing I love it
Fun fact o-scale tracks are Metro tracks
no 3 rail tracks irl do not look like lionel tracks. the third rail is outside both of the other rails, unlike lionel which has it in the middle
Nice one 👍

My only nitpick it that it still has the flying Numberboards and the headlight isn’t inside the smokebox
Oh well, nobody’s perfect 😃
@@Ericstrains still looks just as good!
Such a classic and cool train now make it push a delorean up to 88

Very cool!
Is it expensive

Inwish companies would make a $100 base loco with upgrade sets you can buy and put on yourself. The barrier to entry is so high now!
It's a rich man's hobby now. You can't even get an old Marx train on ebay for a good price anymore. It's a shame.
