How fast should Lady Decade speak during the ad? Lady Decade: yes Jokes aside, thanks for speeding this up a little. I was really looking forward for some Nomad content :D
I never had a Nomad, but gamegear was great if you bought the battery pack and AC adapter. They should have just sold the battery/ac adapter with the system. It's basically the difference between people who played it a ton and people who thought it sucked...whether you had a way to power it easily and affordably.
@@graphicsgod my college roomate had one so I was able to get some time playing his...same thing as GG. Awesome if you had a battery pack and AC adapter, a doorstop if you didn't.
@@gameboypunk660 I didn't have the tv tuner but a friend had it...which is what made me want a gamegear and then I never even got the tuner. That tuner for the GG and TGExpress is now among the most obsolete devices in electronics history haha!
I bought my Nomad in May 1997 for around $50 at Toys R Us, along with the 6-pack game compilation for $10. The battery life was awful, but I had a 12V DC car adapter for long road trips. There were even a few times my brother and I played 2-player together on that tiny screen!
I had a Nomad. Usually played it plugged into the wall. Handy only in that I wouldn't take up the family TV. It was pretty cool, but bulky af when the battery pack was saddled on the back.
I saw a Sega Nomad at an indoor flea market earlier this year. Held it, pushed the buttons, took a couple pics. I wanted it so bad, always wanted one since I was a kid. It was the console itself and the AC adapter. I was so happy and excited to see one for the first time in person! It was $300. Untested if I remember right. Really really wish I could have afforded it. But I am happy I saw it and held it anyway :)
That prototype is looking so good. Sad that we never get it in Japan or Europe. Sega has done so many different consoles for a single model ( Aiwa box Megadrive, wondermega, teradrive, pioneer laseractive, jet Megadrive) Great video 👍
When I was 5 years old I asked my parents for “another gameboy advanced” That request was killed by “we never even had one” and those are too new and expensive. I even explained how I liked the way the screen looked in the dark…. Which the GBA had no backlight. My dad was the nerd that introduced me to gaming he had to have known what I was getting at cheap ass lol I had no idea what I meant was a SEGA Nomad until I found one 4 years later and treated it like my higher being for years. I got the Genesis as my first personal console 2 years earlier and was blown away that I could take my home games outside without the games looking or sounding like a GameBoy Color. I still love the Genesis sound. I also collected cellphones from yard sales and used their rechargeable batteries wired to the nomad since my parents didn’t wanna buy batteries for the thing. Worked out so well the battery pack I made also worked on the real Genesis and a portable DVD player when I wanted to make my own nomad
Probably dodged a Wii situation in the English-speaking markets by using a different name. Maybe someone went and looked up words that rhymed with Venus and realized that kids would be all over making fun of the name.
Proto-names tend to survive in some way even if they're dropped well before release. Like the Atari 2600 was originally named Stella and the Gamecube was called Dolphin but after those names were abandoned they became the names of the main CPU in each system.
agreed i can't stand raid ads and think the games awful but I can't bring myself to hate them as they singlehandedly do more for my favorite content creators then I think literally anyone else
@@earthwormjim91 my feeling exactly. We are free to ignore them but we can’t deny how much money they put into our favorite creators pockets to keep us getting wonderful content.
Maybe they weren't rechargeable when they came out, but I remember there may be some better batteries now that i heard nimh for some reason. Maybe there was some very impressive high end premium batteries in 1995 that would also give it a couple more hours, though once again likely not recharable. I looked it it seems like energizer had a rechargeable battery in 97. But I think back then - though things have improved - there was just such a large market for powering on discmen and children's christmas toy fades that companies were just at the top of the battery research game so they likely just got cheaper.
I picked up a Nomad when it came out. I took it to school and played Super Street fighter 2 with my friends during lunch. It was pretty cool at the time.
Great video. It's interesting to note the Venus prototype shares quite a few design/aesthetic similarities with the early Saturn prototype, in particular the colour. As an aside, I would love to see one of those Champagne coloured Saturn consoles (later prototype from TGS) which looks similar to the November 94 retail model - there were a handful used for demo purposes in stores which allegedly still exist.
Awesome to see Sega system I have never heard of. When growing up I had a Sega Pico. It would be awesome to see a Sega Pico video from you in the future.
I have a Nomad! Shoddy screen, perhaps thanks to age now, but it's bloody good fun... So long as I can plug it in to the mains. Excellent video as always!
@Nat20 Damage That actually was one of it's benefits. At launch, the Nomad already had hundreds of games. I imagine if Sega didn't abandon the console, they could have continued developing Genesis games with the Nomad in mind. Maybe even shrink the carts to fit the Nomad better (with an optional adapter to fit the Genesis). You gotta remember that the Nomad was the most powerful handheld console for a while, until the GBA came out.
@@fattiger6957 Yeah, I think the plan was to just keep making Genesis games and start calling them Nomad games after awhile. Not a bad idea, in itself.
Sometime around 1993, I called Sega of America as a little kid, asking for a handheld version of the Sega Genesis. I had a Game Gear at the time (but not a Genesis) and was sad that it wasn't compatible with the 16-bit library. They said that they thought it was a great idea and might work on it. I didn't learn about the Nomad until around '00, at which time I was already saving for the N64, and never bought it.
I am quite happy that I picked one up for fairly cheap some years ago. It's a very cool piece, that I'm sure if was marketed better and had more support over here, would have done a whole lot better. As I kid, I would have loved it, and funny now seeing Nintendo copy this same model years later with the Switch in a way.
I blame the essence of the 90s for the change in appearance from the Venus to what the Nomad ended up looking like. The groove of the 90s made that seem ok lol
Really wish the Nomad kept the prototype form factor. They just popped in six-button controller d-pad and buttons, lol. I think it would have been way more comfortable.

Venus proto build looks like better ergonomics and aesthetics than Nomad. The buttons seem identical to the good version of Saturn game pad. I really love the Nomad! It's comfortable enough to use it on the lap or in bed, at least if you got big hands. I am using rechargable AAs for it. The RGB Scart output is nice as well. So it's basically one-cable solution for playing Megadrive games on TV. A cheap Everdrive also helps with region-locking games. Crazy to think there was a time when back-lit color LCD screens were so exotic and desirable that people would have pissed through 6 AA batteries every 2 hours just to use it.
With the popularity of retro systems, they could rerelease the Nomad in a 32X built in version with a LED backlit LCD or OLED screen and much longer battery life.

I had the screen magnifier and tv tuner which connected to my Multi Mega and 32X so I could basically play 4 systems. Of course the tuner input meant you can use it for any source with the right cable, funnily enough I don't ever recall connecting my Saturn/DC/N64/PS1/PS2/XB to the set-up because I eventually got a 14inch TV.
