Into Thin Air is a really great read. There is so much real depth there - life and death, wealth and poverty, the downsides of adventure tourism. When the book was first released, I happened to see him at a very small ( unadvertised) event with one of the other survivors. It was really about PTSD and the soul. I came away with HUGE respect for John Krakauer. I was already a fan of this writing, but his heart was there on display and it was impressive. Reading past the story here leaves a lot to think about.

Hi, Olive! Pat Summit is a women's college basketball legend. She wrote at least two books in her life time, 'Sum it Up' and 'Reach for the Summit'. There are also several more books written about her life. I've never read any of them, but I wanted to suggest them to you as possibilities to satisfy your want to read books on the topic.
I was listening to a podcast recently where they were talking about Edith Wharton and I think I need to read one of her novels because I think I would love them!
Happy 2024! I love the idea of Wharton Winter- that is so fun! For your nonfiction choices, Into Thin Air was one of my favorite nonfiction reads back in 2020, excellently written. Sounds like a great reading month ahead!!
Into Thin Air is a great book! I bought my husband the book when we were dating because I had him watch the movie when we first started dating and before he went back to basic training after holiday block leave. I want to read it again.
Happy New Year, Olive! I have read almost all of Edith Wharton’s works & can’t praise them enough! The Buccaneers is very good, but The House of Mirth & Ethan Frome are two of my favorites, though a bit on the tragic side, but so well-written. She was a remarkable human being as well as an author. Her autobiography, A Backward Glance, is fascinating & inspiring & will help to appreciate her writing even more. Hope you can fit that in at some point in the future; you won’t regret it! 📚

Happy New Year Olive! I am currently reading The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill and The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston both of which I'm enjoying. I'm planning to read Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson, Song of Blood & Stone by L. Penelope, Valdemar by Mercedes Lackey, A Court of Mist & Fury by Sarah J. Maas, several ARCs that come out this month and then will see how things go as to what I may read next. I hope you have a great reading month and I also am trying to read the physical ARCs that I have as well as slowly work at reading the back log of digital ARCs.

There is a TV Series made back in 1995 based on Edith Wharton's The Buccaneers as well if you're interested. Zuleikha is calling to me so I'll probably check that out first, but the bear book is up there for me as well but I'm a sucker for animal books.

I’ll be so interested to hear your thoughts on it after you’ve read it. I’m starting this year off with a non fiction, In Cold Blood. I’ve had this on my shelves for some time and added it to my book tube spin books this year and Rick MacDonnel picked it’s number. So finally it is going to get read. I'm currently reading " My name is Barbara " an biography by the legendary Barbara Streisand. Its a very long and lengthy book with 966 pages . But, its so good because she is telling the truth about everything and why she wanted to be an actress and singer. So highly recommend it . I love reading memoirs and biographies because your going inside a person's life and why they chosen the career they wanted or the choices in life they made.
I've been re-inspired to read Edith Wharton thanks to The Gilded Age, and might join you for the reading of Buccaneers. I used to have The Custom of the Country but I think I accidentally donated it when I was debating if I wanted to continue Edith Wharton's works. Currently I'm reading Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) by Jose Rizal. Its set during the time when Spain colonized the Philippines.
Great selections! The first novel sounds a lot like Ruta Sepetys' Between Shades of Gray, which I personally really liked that also covered a family being deported to a Siberian work camp (the Lithuanian liquidation ordered by Stalin)

I enjoyed " From the corner of the oval," and didn't know she had another book out .Her personal life, perspective, and job title were all very interesting and her writing style relatable and engaging !
A sports recommendation…Andrew Maraniss wrote Inaugural Ballers, a true story of the first US Women’s Olympic Basketball team. You’ll recognize lots of names! I have loved all his other books, too, but my favorite was Strong Inside, the story of Perry Wallace, Vanderbilt University and the SEC. Check Maraniss out!
I read Into Thin Air several years ago. It was a total page turner wondering how much crazier the mountain climb would become. I just knew Mount Everest and/or any icy, snowy mountain climb was a no for me. Enjoy!

'Into the Planet' by Jill Heinerth would be a good book to pair with 'Into Thin Air' for a video. It's about cave diving. Jill briefly explains the genetic component of risk seeking and it's value in the exploration of deep water caves and possibly, someday, outer space.

It’s not American college basketball, but when I think if women’s basketball the first team I think of is the Edmonton Grads. They hold the North American record for women’s sports team with the highest winning percentage. You may want to look for The Grads Are Playing Tonight by M. Ann Hall.
