You're so right. The entitlement of the doctor's that they can do whatever they want to whatever is removed from our bodies is disgusting. The laws with OSHA don't allow you to keep whatever the doctor's removed either.

I was not impressed with the attitudes of the medical community in this book either. Such a powerful story though.

@@ReadbyFred agree. I found the interviews with the "health professionals" to be the most frustratingly arrogant. The book is a must read. There's a lot that goes on that the average patient isn't aware of.

Great in depth review. I like you told the family story. This was a very informative book with so much talk of consent, or lack their of. I enjoyed finally reading it.

I love this book! I read it two years ago and I still think about it often. The author did an amazing job of educating while also making me feel so deeply for Lacks and her family

I also read it when it read released & still think about it. The writing is incredible & I felt so sad for her daughter. I remember crying when I read that she had died. I'm also am SO VERY GRATEFUL to Henrietta Lacks because her cells led to the advances in fertility treatment that, w/out which I would not have my 23 & 19 yr olds.

@@elizabeth-betsyjohnson7195 - that's amazing to hear about your children. I felt saddened for Elsie's fate, and was heartbroken on reading about Deborah's fate in the final chapters. Thanks for watching :)

This is such an amazing book and I’m so glad that many high schools in the US have it as required reading and it’s part of the Medical School curriculum as well. If you haven’t read Hidden Valley Road it’s a perfect followup to this and incredibly well done.

What a great review! This book has been in my mind for so long and I just need to get my hands on it. Hearing how much the medical industry deprived and robbed this family of, to be quite honest, is not surprising. It takes stories like this one to hopefully make change in medical policy.

Thank you for the compliments Kristine! Olive has a great channel, and it was very nice of her to shout out so many smaller channels. I recommend The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks; Skloot did a great job in telling the story :)

@@ReadbyFred Thank you once again for replying to my comments. H Lacks has been on my radar for awhile. This book sounds like it would give me all the feels that I love in a book. Science has always been a buzzword for me in my reading taste. Loved Radium Girls, the book and the movie. The titles I have been placing on my 2023 loose tbr are Soul of an Octopus, The Poisoner's Handbook, Behave: The Biology of Humans At Our Best and Worst and Invisible Women. So glad I reached out - Great to connect w you!

I love this book because of 2 things, I learned about Henrietta and her unique story. Second, the book showed a journey of creating relationship and earning trust with Henrietta's family and the race dynamics, etc.

I enjoyed this book as well. Skloot did a great job giving us Henrietta's story, and the story of Henrietta's family. Deborah was my favorite; sadly she passed away in 2009.
