  • Pilot Training Next Program | New Method for Pilot Training | United States Air Force
Pilot Training Next (PTN) is an experimental program under the “Learning Next” umbrella with a focus on understanding how Airmen learn, as well as exploring and potentially prototyping a flying training environment that integrates various technologies to produce pilots in an accelerated-and learning-focused manner.

In the past T-37’s were used for primary pilot training. T-37 were tandem seat jet trainers. Next phase was in T-38’s. Now after T-6 Texan phase pilots either go to a T-38 or passenger type jet.

I flew T-37s in 1999, afterwards we split into T-38s or T-1s. This is not a new change and it had nothing to do with the primary trainer switching from the T37 to T6

I play DCS. It is also VR and I also have the exact same HOTAS, the Thrustmaster Warthog. The F-16 module for DCS is releasing this September and it is going to be completely clickable which means that the inside of the cockpit works just like the real F-16 (besides things such as IFF which is still classified). I'm very excited because this means that if I do get accepted into Pilot Training in a few years, I should be ahead of the rest of the class. There are a few real F-16 pilots that I fly with in the game that are going to teach me how to navigate the cockpit and work the avionics.

Pilot shortage. Bring back the Aviation Cadet Corps. Army, Navy, and Air Force used Aviation Cadet programs from WWI through the mid 1960's to train and commission pilots and navigators (combat systems officers in today's world). Total immersion 24 hours a day, seven days a week, flight training and a cadet structure for military training. In the late 1950's AF requirements were two years college, high physical standards, and successfully pass several screening exams. The screening exams were to determine suitability and used to decide if you were going to be a pilot or navigator. Cadets entered service as an Aviation Cadet, were paid at E5 rate plus flight pay once they began flight training. Three months preflight school at Lackland AFB which was all military training (drill, leadership, firearms, lots of PT). That was followed by twelve months of flight training. Upon successful completion commissioned as a second lieutenant and received flight wings. Date of commissioning was backdated to date entered service as a cadet. Good record and promoted to first lieutenant in six months. That resulted in some second lieutenants who were not old enough to buy a beer outside the officer's club :)

That simulation is being run on P3Dv4 and they are running one of the newest training simulations of the T-6A Texan II, and it was made by none other than A2A Simulations. Who have been making the most realistic GA and warbird simulation for FSX and P3D. They were very tight lipped about this project and they have also done a T-38A for the Air Force as well now. Those guys over there really know their stuff. If you own P3Dv4 or FSX and like GA plane and WWII warbirds theirs are with out a doubt the most realistic planes that you will find. Don't believe me? Ask the US Air Force. XPlane is too limited for the the Air Force needed. The A2A Texan ll is a module that actually deactivates the P3D flight engine and injects their own running outside the program. This method gives them much more fidelity in both aerodynamics and systems. XPlane by contrast does not allow the ingrained architecture to be messed with or turned off. A2A has been in talks for many years with the XPlane devs on this front but thus far it has been a no go, and that is why this airman, aircraft mechanic, and former Army aviator will always stick with A2A because they don't fly by the book, they fly like they fly in real life and not many planes hit their numbers all the time. Fouled plugs, dragging breaks, bad fuel, forgotten pitot cover all will affect how a real plane flies, and that is exactly how A2A planes perform. I think that only PMDG can match them but that is only because A2A hasn't started doing modern airliners but their L-049 blows the PMDG's DC-6 out of the water in terms of systems fidelity and immersion. So for me it is a no brainer that A2A was selected for this project and I have been a loyal customer of theirs since 2008.
