For different that Spa this weekend for Lewis. If you're the front runner, track position is everything. Drivers behind often have more options like Russel trying a one stop. That really wasn't a big gamble, because when Russel pitted he was behind Verstappen. So, if it would fail, we ended up back behind Verstappen again. Mercedes did the right strategy yesterday in Spa with covering of Leclerc and Piastri and they also made the right calls in AD 2021. Other examples from 2021 was Lewis in Hungary where he was unable to pass Verstappen on track, pitted for new rubber and did 20 quali labs and at that point all RB could do was trying to get to the end of the race before Hamilton would catch up with Verstappen. The reserve happened in France 2021 I believe where Verstappen did an extra pit stop and caught and passed Hamilton in the penultimate lap. The benefit of leading a race is that you have (mostly) clean air and tire management is a little easier, but the downside is that you are limited in terms of strategy. You have to make the safe calls in order to maintain the lead and often that means reacting to the drivers behind...
This narrative is very silly. The safety car was suppose to extend til the end of the race. Michael Masi did not follow the proper procedures hence why he was fired. Please do not spread misinformation.
