Sandy Munro had an episode discussing outlets. A standard dryer outlet was not recommended. A commercial or industrial outlet was recommended.
I had an outlet installed for my Leaf before I heard about choosing the right outlet. When I checked, I found the electrician had installed an industrial outlet. It's also good for home owners to keep in mind how many appliances they are using. I was using too many appliances while charging the car and blew the main breaker.
When I first purchased the Leaf I was told I couldn't take long trips. I took my charging station with me after doing some research and I drove from Portland Oregon to Hanford California. In the areas where there were no charging stations I plugged in at RV parks. Using a dongle and app I was able to monitor the battery level and temperature.
I knew from my research to be prepared for some long charging times. It was an adventure I was prepared for.
Today's EVs are different with long range batteries. The battery in my Leaf can be replaced with a larger battery the cost is less than a new car.
Hope you have many long years with your Leaf.

Not yet an EV owner, but it's interesting to hear your experiences. Nice video, Linn. Thanks.

Just fyi, placing the charger in front of the electrical panel within 36" violates the 30"w x 36"d clear space req'mts of the electrical code. Same w/the rectangular box above left of the charger

I would be interested to know approximately how much it costs per mile for the electricity and how much of a dropoff in mileage occurs due to temps below freezing.

I have followed your EV journey and i am completely convinced this is the right way to go with transportation but what do you think of solar cars? The electric Viking has been explaining them and I think they are even better, would you switch? Would you test one?

Does this unit tie in to the times when the electric company charge the least for power? In the UK some companies will give you different rates for different times, even down to the hour.

I love my Leaf its a 2013 with 70000 miles on it and has lost 2 bars I use a 3.5 kilowatt charger hooked up to an old water heater circuit

Can you use the charger without the RFID card?

It has 3 ways to start charging: with the card, with the app and directly, you just have to connect the plug and in about 5 seconds it starts charging your vehicle

I would be curious how many battery bars Darbins leaf has lost, but its hard to get an answer from her

If you look at 4:29, on the far right, it looks like the car has lost 1 battery line from its total range. Pretty good in my opinion

My unit failed 9 months after I purchased it on Amazon. I contacted the company and proceeded to send photos and proof of the installation. Additionally, I hired an electrician to check the breakers, and took my car in for service to eliminate every possible problem before asking for a replacement. The electrician confirmed, that the unit had failed and a needed replacement. On July 3, 2024, the company agreed to send me a new unit and thanked me for providing the evidence of the failure. Unfortunately, after multiple promises and apologies, they refuse to send the unit. They claim to have a hassle free 1-2 year warranty and I went the extra mile and provided them with the documentation they asked for. This company has ZERO integrity, and shouldn’t be trusted, you have so many options out there and can do much better than this company.

I would never ever own an EV. Seen them catch on fire, seen them take out a home when charging. The batteries loose a percentage of charge year to year. I'll stick with my Honda with 40mpg and no fear of ever being trapped on the road looking for a charging station and waiting a half hour or more to charge or wait in line to charge. EV's are garbage

So because of the charging situation, you are stuck not ever being able to drive more than half your range from home.......and you call this "Freedom"? Color me confused. EVs will never become mainstream until & unless there are as many charging ports as fuel pumps at every gas station/convenience store in North America. The infrastructure is not ready, and EVs will not widely penetrate the mass market until the infrastructure is there to support them.

It's surprising to see how someone can be so wrong about something yet so confident in their position. Maybe 15 years ago you were right, but certainly not today.

@@rickmellor Sorry to burst your bubble, Rick, but easily accessible EV charging points are hardly ubiquitous. Perhaps in some select locations in So Cal there are lots of them......but there needs to be lots of them bloody everywhere, and there just aren't.

    • @kevinvernon3600

@@rickmellor None - because there is minimal infrastructure around here to support one. Charging at home would be nearly the only option, and that is far too restrictive. I am Interested in EVs, so I am paying close attention to supportive infrastructure, and around here such infrastructure is bare bones minimal, at best. It is so poor that I have zero incentive to change to one.

@@kevinvernon3600 sorry that’s your situation. It will change eventually. Around here charging is readily available and I’ve comfortably lived with an EV for 4 years. Not a Leaf, mind you… they don’t have enough range for my needs. But we’ve been able to travel all over the Western states without a problem. We still have gas powered cars but barely use them because going to the gas station is a chore to us now.
