Blew head gasket in my 5.3. Quoted like 8k for a re-man motor swap lmfao 🤣 . Guess who’s about to rebuild their first junkyard ls… awesome vid tons of help
I’m going to say this…after watching what you guys did to that crankshaft for measuring and balancing I realized this…no matter how big your ego is at fixing cars some things like this are left to the professionals with machinery and science and math skills. I’m here thinking in the mindset of oil changes, air in tires, water pump, spark plugs, alternator and battery swap. These are very important to know how to do and I do, but some things like this crankshaft which is the soul of the engine’s movement are left to the real deal guys. That’s why I see now why it costs thousands of dollars doing major engine repair instead of replacing brake pads in your backyard.
Yep. Basically get your new parts and take your motor and the parts to a shop to get balanced and also have your block checked for cracks. Then put it together yourself. To save a little money.
THANK YOU for not doing the stupid music that everybody else does on these videos! And for actually staying on a shot of what you're doing for more than 2 seconds. Makes it easier for us old farts to follow and enjoy!
The big difference between a shop (and what you could do in a shop) in the 1970's (my era) and now are TOOLS. You guys have the benefit of AMAZING tech tools. Wow what I could have done with that. (We used to weld with a oxy-acetylene torch and a coat hanger for fill).
It’s crazy you say that. I’ve worked with older guys who could balance a drive shaft with a strobe light. It’s amazing how people over came not having this modern tech and still got shit done
Currently having my Tahoe 2007 LS engine rebuilt with a overhaul kit as we speak, so I thought I'd watch part 1 and part 2 videos to understand what's what's involved with a overhaul 😅 good job guys! My mechanic is doing a lot of work 😮 can't wait till it is done 👍✅
These videos have been amazing. Thank you for all the detail. I plan on buying a 5.3 to put in my prerunner an this has helped me understand components of a engine
In the near future I'll be doing this as well. I saw another video concerning replacing the oil pump. And it was concerning the centering of the pump. And he put a feeler gauge of about 25,000 I think on opposite sides of the crankshaft in order to make sure it was truly centered. I noticed you didn't do that. Keep in mind I have never built an engine in my life. This is going to be new to me. I'm really intimidated but I'm looking forward to it at the same time.
Okay, I want to clarify that I know very little about engines, but at 26:30, there seems to be a lot of old gasket residue that should be removed before installing the new gasket?
Thanks. I’m not a machinist usually farm it out. Beyond my skill set. I like the way you are explaining as you go. However a few places are void of explanation for us dummies. Not sure what or why you are doing. I recommend you add step by step when you edit. Help your subs.
I just got my 09' LS block back from the machine shop and have started reassembly. The only part that I am unfamiliar with is what you are using the dial bore gauge at 15:50 to do? Why are you doing that and what are you measuring? And what would you do if one of those did not measure correctly? Thanks!!
Excellent video! I wish I lived closer, I’d bring you guys my LS327 for a little machine work. It’s time to pull it from its previous ride and prep for install in my 68 c10
Just wondering why no windage tray in the oil pan, didn’t notice the insulation of the dumbbell or gallery plug up front . I built a 416 stroker and installed the windage tray with minor modifications to the oil pickup tube and spacing for the big end of the rods. The cam sounds way too big for a street car specially automatic. What’s the expected idle speed?.
8k!? They probably don't even do half the things you did for that price what parts kit did you go w buddy I like it for my 5.3 you think itl be boost friendly? And how much?
Yes! I would definitely would like you guy’s to rebuild my engine in my 1987 chevy caprice . What I need to do to make that happen. Thank you guy’s in advance.
I’ve have a love hate relationship with the 5.3 I had a 07 with the AFM and it was horrible now I have a 2013 with the 6.2 and it’s been pretty good so far.
i justy installed a new timing chain and when I torque it down to spec the crankshaft does not move at all and the chain doesn't move, I also have the stock sprocket, any ideas? I have a 2002 6.0 lq4.
My dad‘s 5.3 just dropped a lifter. Mechanic quoted him 7000 for a Jasper engine. No DOD in it. Not sure if that’s a good deal or not but that’s installed and a 100,000 mile warranty so not so bad. Maybe.
I can't speak on the VVT or AFM but, I can tell you the DoD has been know to fail. My engine (2012 5.3) had it and we disabled it with HP Tuners software. They have had issues with the lifters failing on the DoD engines. We disabled it at 100k and 30k later there has been no ill effects from doing so. So nice not having the engine constantly switching back and forth between 4 and 8 cylinder.
What do you usually change to do a rebuild 5.3 you see I got this 2003 Chevy Blazer witch comes with a 4.3 engine in it in I want to do the LS swap on my truck I want to make a street truck something I could drive anywhere basically and how would you check the duration.
I noticed in some of your videos I've watched that you use that red goop when assembling. I'm doing my first rebuild, not an LS a 5.7 HEMI. I'm confused on which way to go when picking a good lube for assembly. Some videos they use white lithium grease, some just use oil, what kind do you use and does it change on the what kind of engine your working on or do you always use the same kind?
@@JacobVillemain Great. Thanks! You have really great videos and I've picked up quite a bit. Nice machines and shop as well! How did you get your start?
Does the VVT Cam Phaser make clicking noise when turning it over by hand. Or should it not make any noise. Can't find an answer to this question. Mine is brand new with limiter installed but is making a light click by the spring.
hey i really like you guys my chevy tahoe have 369,000 miles on the engine im about to do the headgasket and send the head off to get new valve stems seat gaskets, so do you think i need to get the camshaft, and crankshaft replaced as well
Woulda skipped that oil pickup clogging cam tensioner. Never had one of those NOT be broken on disassembly, LS2 damper and chain all day long. Along with an oil pump port and shim and block off for the pressure bleed valve in the pan after a DOD delete.
I was kind if surprised you didn't shim out the oil pump. And then lock it in place. Thats been drilled into my head by a local builder as a serous issue.
I have a 2004 yukon XL 1500 5.3 4wd and mechanic down here in Sanford Fl r changing me between $7k and $9k for a used engine i think that crazy . so since i cant fine a honest mechanic i decide to take the tag off and suspend my insurance till i can find someone that can do cheaper or who can rebuild my engine whatever is cheaper .

How’s it going?
How's it going?
Yes hows it going? With your rebuild? I’ve had bad luck with finding a mechanic so im taking notes & trying to figure things out.
Hows it going?

Alright. Got to see the rebuild.Would like to have seen the Dyno test tho. Thanks for sharing. Trucker Ray ✝️
This has been a fun set to follow. Thanks for bringing us along!

I have a 5.3LS 08 Impala SS ... Low oil pressure. What can I do? Needs help please.
You guys have answered more questions in this one video then any other Tuber has ever..... thanks...
Nice work guys!! I have a 2011 GMC Sierra with the all aluminum block 5.3 170k miles. Gonna do mine once I hit 200k.
You know how to do the job without any doubts. I wish you could show a list of parts you bought and where for how much.
Hpow much would the work you did cost aprox?
Someone's dad owns a machine shop!!! Pretty damn smart for a young guy
Great video! Thank you for walking us through the process!
Anytime you tighten the main caps it is a good idea to turn the crankshaft to be sure you don't have any rough spots. Just saying.
great job, love you brothers working peacefully together in harmony, LOVED THE TWO VIDEOS PART 1 AND PART 2 THANKS FOR YOUR INFO AND KNOWLEDGE !!!

About 6 grand is average cost
@Deez nuts I know that. But it is hard to find someone that wants to do it, and they are very good at it. 👍
Thanks for the response. I live NC, if you anyone in that state holla!
6 grand got mine rebuilt for 4 k

I am checking the clearance between the main bearings & crankshaft main journals. It is always smart & recommended to check it.

My eyes are bleeding. Where are the proper torque sequences for everything? I think the only thing that was torqued in sequence right were the heads.
Great work, what's the name of manufacture for the front cover alignment tool used at minute 24:45?
Where are you located?
So glad to see you guys are knowledgable on balancing
Because of the look of it and what I here you guys do great work
The 460 Ford is a 385 series engine, not an FE.
I’ve seen a lot of other builders make use the front and rear covers were flush with pan deck of block. Didn’t see that step.
Can't believe you assembled that engine with filthy parts.
Hey brother did you reuse the connecting rods that came from that engine?
I saw you replaced the valve springs to match the can but I didn't see a valve job. Did you go through all that work and not do one ??
Dope video u would have liked to have known what you guys expect as far as performance hp and cost
Where are you guys at cause I’ve got one of those 2021 Silverado’s and I wouldn’t mind deleting my DFM when the time comes
Aren’t you supposed to torque the main caps from the center out. As manufacturer specifications? Any engine torque sequence is from the center out
Yes. You are. Never seen it done this way on any engine. It's always from the middle out.
dont you have to shim the oil pump ?
Why didn’t you use two 0.002 thousands inch feeler gauges to center the oil pump and no specials tools to lineup the timing cover?
Doing this will make the engine run faster and smoother?
is it not ok to run the stock crank shaft
Is rebalancing a must do?
Why does my 5.3 jerk and stall when I accelerate at around 12-1500rpm, I have to let off or floor it to smooth out
I have a 08 Impala SS. Low oil pressure. What can I do?
8k!? They probably don't even do half the things you did for that price what parts kit did you go w buddy I like it for my 5.3 you think itl be boost friendly? And how much?

Pretty sure I didn't see you do the oil pump alignment ( that you have a video on ) or even rotate the crank before final torquing.
What brand of pistons are those?
Im in The Process of doing AFM & VVT Delete to my 2014 LC9 5.3
Question: Can I use The Factory length push Rods when using Delphi Ls7 style lifter?
Where can I purchase the assembly?
Pretty good video but I'm not really sure but it looked like #1 was not at TDC when timed an no rtv where the oil pan meets the front an rear cover
Thanks for the video. Do you have to run a regular or low pressure oil pump after the delete or use a high pressure on with the oil pan plug?
Gen 4 oil pump doesn’t require shims to install?
How do you know your not 180° out on that camshaft
Do you reuse all stock bolts on a stock rebuild? What clearance on crank and rods?
I’ve have a love hate relationship with the 5.3 I had a 07 with the AFM and it was horrible now I have a 2013 with the 6.2 and it’s been pretty good so far.
You could’ve spent $100 and turn the AFM off and that would’ve helped a lot.
Can you guys share some of the tools and brands you use like that digital angle torque wrench !?!
i justy installed a new timing chain and when I torque it down to spec the crankshaft does not move at all and the chain doesn't move, I also have the stock sprocket, any ideas? I have a 2002 6.0 lq4.

I use Clevite assembly lube on the bearings and valvetrain, and Driven break in oil for the rings and cylinder walls. I do these for all engines
@@JacobVillemain Great. Thanks! You have really great videos and I've picked up quite a bit. Nice machines and shop as well! How did you get your start?
Started sweeping the floor and moved up from there! Now I manage the shop and oversee production
How important is the balancing with a stick rebiuld?
hi, how is te correct position of the lifter, have one hole of lubrication, goes to up or down
what would happen if i didnt add or subtract weight
What cam did you guys use? Thanks
What's involved in deleting all that DOD, variable timing, etc?
Does the VVT Cam Phaser make clicking noise when turning it over by hand. Or should it not make any noise. Can't find an answer to this question. Mine is brand new with limiter installed but is making a light click by the spring.
Is there much you can do with a 5.3 Ls4??
Hey there,
Are you using a torque to angle wrench or do you just torque them to so many foot pounds?
Good video!
Digital torque wrench that does all the beeping is angle torques
Rebuild it, New motor?
Awesome why did you go 10 over on the pistons that engine looked real good ?
Is there a sequence or do you need to rotate the crankshaft to torque rocker arms?
Why you didn’t shim the oil pump
Do u have to balance it
I have a tahoe 2011 if I change the lifters it's Necessary to change different parts
hey i really like you guys my chevy tahoe have 369,000 miles on the engine im about to do the headgasket and send the head off to get new valve stems seat gaskets, so do you think i need to get the camshaft, and crankshaft replaced as well
What about the flywheel and the crank pulley!!!!
LS are internally balanced
On 6:50/ I was tryn to blow off the shavings 😂😂😂 man I thought I was workin lol
Do you normally consider the windage friction and add oil weight inside the crank oil passage when balancing the counterweight?
how much money did you spend on the new parts to rebuild the engine??
great video keep up the great work
Is it needed to balance the crank?
Where can i get a scale like yours?
Hi there love your work Where you guys out of ? State city
What does it cost in labor to do this?
Try tig braising with brass filler, soft and easy to drill.
Not what you want spinning at 7,000RPM.
Woulda skipped that oil pickup clogging cam tensioner. Never had one of those NOT be broken on disassembly, LS2 damper and chain all day long. Along with an oil pump port and shim and block off for the pressure bleed valve in the pan after a DOD delete.
Just found your channel. Did you reuse the factory main cap bolts? I thought they were TTY and couldn't be reused.
just curious if it leaked without the rtv in the corners for the oil pan ?
I was kind if surprised you didn't shim out the oil pump. And then lock it in place. Thats been drilled into my head by a local builder as a serous issue.
How much does a rebuild cost?
What’s the angle torque wrench for?
Why didn't you clean the block and oil pan?
