Conan is one of the few talk show hosts that actually understands Aubrey’s humor. It’s so refreshing to see someone so easily banter back and forth with her because ususually people have no idea how to keep it going. Conan and Aubrey have amazing chemistry and I can’t get enough of their interviews!
Yeah, I think I see what you're referring to. It's as if she was forming her thoughts at the same time she articulated them and processed what she just said right after, which I think a lot of that comes from her improv comedy background.
Not to compare myself to the great Aubrey Plaza of course, but I do the same thing. For me it's just because I find it really difficult to keep conversation flowing for some reason. I'm just generally kind of awkward when it comes to it. Not to play armchair psychologist, but maybe it's as simple as that for her as well.
@burteriksson Not really. She's done multiple "legit" interviews where she explains that she accidentally screws up the interview and just says stuff on the spot instead of following the usual procedure actors do during interviews. She's gotten better over the years and does well in interviews nowadays, however.
val roe honestly tho. i was literally lmao the entire video despite watching countless clips of her and knowing what her humor was like, even while the audience was silent most of the video.
I've watched countless interviews with this woman and it's just impossible to say if she is ever being serious. It takes skill as an interviewer to be able to follow that level of brilliancy, and Conan is one of the few that knows how to do that to get the most out of her. I love her so much.
I'll occasionally get an Aubrey/Conan clip in my feed, and I'll sit and watch 30mins to an hour of old clips of them. Never gets old. They're both hilarious. 😄
This shows why Conan is a pro. Most other hosts would have thought this was not going well and she probably wouldn’t have been invited back. Conan actually allowed it to be what it was, and facilitated some great comedy.
You're right about Conan, because he does get her humour, and is fast enough to to dial into it and use it. But with other hosts, such as Letterman, there were a lot of missed opportunities to respond. To be fair, unless you know her style, the deadpan delivery makes it hard for each punchline to land. Still I've never seen a host who wasn't impressed by some of what they heard (and saw, as she is real easy on the eyes).
I hate it that in any of the Aubrey Plaza interviews I saw the audience is always kinda scared to laugh or don't laugh at all like DAMN y'all have a girl that is literally comedy gold in everything that comes out of her mouth, show some respect!!!
She throws off the timing of the usual talkshow cues for people to laugh. It's a more organic, whole-grain form of call and response. A group that comprises a typical audience are expected to laugh on cue, and her subverting the timing leads to them waiting for their cue, so it gets drawn out in a way that can be interpreted as them not liking it. Molasses, not sugar.
Letterman is the only other host I've seen that instantly got her schtick and let her run with it. What was fascinating is that Dave knew every single time one of her stories was bullshit, and he either laughed and let her run with it, or just to let her know he was on to her, he would say 'No you didn't", chuckle and then let her go into her next crazy story. It was amazing watching the old consummate pro dance with the young quirky crazy girl like they were old friends. Dave was always great at recognizing the few of her caliber and instantly changing his style to set them up to go full throttle by asking them the right questions, being quiet, and then drawing out just a little bit more to keep them running with it. You could tell he was just so happy to sit back and watch those types do their thing. He was soooo much better than Leno.
Ms. Plaza meets ythe modern requirement perfectly....the fan is troubled that the players may lie and obfuscate, but Ms. Plaza tells Us up front that her stories are half fake snd bullshit, so her fans need not doubt stcall.
Conan's closing remarks at 8:53 almost brought me to tears Conan doesn't judge, he will laugh at anything, point out the strangeness of it, but he doesn't judge. Whoever he is with, whatever walk of life they come from, he will always meet them with empathy and curiosity. Even if he pokes fun at them and his end goal is just to make silly jokes he never strays from that baseline. And that's probably why to this day Aubrey and Conan have some of the best hilarious and trusting and relaxed interviews you will see in any setting
Honestly, people say she's weird, but the only reason she comes across that way is because she's not comfortable putting on a fake glossy PR persona like you're expected to on this type of show. Like, she might make stuff up/kid around, but she doesn't smile and lie at you while expecting you to believe it, you know? I think it's honestly so inspiring.
She feels so relatable. I can't really figure out if that's indicative of my own awkwardness or if she's just cleanly portraying social awkwardness in a way that most people can relate to. I feel like people tend to differ in their sensitivity to perceive awkwardness. Where some people are aware that social situations in themselves are/can be full of potentially awkward elements, others seem blind to it. Then again social awkwardness is a social construct and is limited to exist within and among people. The more social the person is, the more 'real' the interpersonal awkwardness. Whereas a person who is not as social can still find awkwardness in things that the rest of the group don't ascribe awkwardness to. For this reason I suppose there are a multitude of conceptions of awkwardness: 1. Intersubjective awkwardness: Something is awkward when a group collectively finds the situation embarrasing or unpleasant. 2. Subjective awkwardness: Whether or not something is awkward is solely determined in the eye of the beholder. And easily an infinity of other definitions . Can social awkwardness be said to be objective? I don't know where I'm going with this, but I guess I feel very awkward.
ooo this is very interesting. i think in general (besides group situations where ppl think something is awkward because everyone around them deems it awkward) awkwardness is subjective kinda like embarrassment is. it’s only embarrassing if you feel embarrassed. imo, a situation is awkward only if you feel awkward. definitely agree w what you’re saying
I have this sense of humour Most people will never understand you're making a joke Fun to see it in someone else lol And yes, in case people don't realise: it's NOT awkwardness. It's entirely deliberate. Most people just don't realise.
She has such unique demeanor. It’s like she’s trying to not be weird but she’s trying too hard. So she still comes off weird. Then it gets laughs so she just keeps the bit running.
Black Irish refers to Spanish/Sephardic and North-West African genetic 'influence' in the Hibernian gene pool. Aubrey knows her history... A unique and enigmatic genius in my opinion.
The way she looks at Andy when she says she's afraid of mail is genius, her timing is great- and then Conan is just fascinated by her delivery at the end, his face when she's doing that bit
Conan is just enjoying the situation, I feel a lot of other Talkshow hosts (except Colbert) feel threatened by her combo of being really intelligent sexy and not giving shit about pleasing anyone who does not get her
@@alcapoontangmooseinthepoos2310 Idk, I get jumpy when I get a letter from somewhere I haven't heard from in a while, just because I've had companies fuck up and send bills to the wrong address that made them way, way overdue. But I'd guess for her it's a whole other level, just because she's famous and has to deal with that 2% of her psycho stalker fanbase who would actually do some batshit insane things.

My favorite is norm mcdonald and harland williams Conan but she's up there with my favorite too
Conan is a really good host. He can handle bill burr well too. Conan and graham norton are probably the best talk show hosts

Yep! Totally agree. She will just say whatever & be effortlessly hilarious!
Sometimes, it seems like even she’s throw off by what she’s saying

Yeah, I think I see what you're referring to. It's as if she was forming her thoughts at the same time she articulated them and processed what she just said right after, which I think a lot of that comes from her improv comedy background.

Can't blame him. This is the interview where whomever wasn't in love with her...well now they are.
It’s amazing to me how she can somehow be both super socially awkward and also not care what anyone thinks
Micah Goldson that’s because she knows everyone else is stupid 😂
It's because insecurity and social awkwardness don't go hand in hand. That's more social anxiety.
It's because she's not awkward, she just comes off awkward. You can come off awkward without feeling awkward. It's called perception

Every socially awkward person I know doesn’t care what anyone thinks. That’s part of what makes them socially awkward.
