Since writing that comment two years ago, I have tried the "Twisted 20s" on a couple of my snares and they weren't too bad. I think I'm still a 16-strand kind of guy, when I think about the ideal snare sound I always have in my mind---but I must admit, watching this video again just now, those "Concert 12s" sound awesome!
Don't give a sh*t about the snare wires. To little differences to really hear it. I just always watch Carter because of his great relaxed and inventious playing. Always a treat!
Nice video, but I have to admit I'm struggling to hear any difference. Listening through set of Yamaha HS50M speakers. All I could hear were some tiny variations in snare buzz sustain, but that could just come from small differences in snare wire tensions. Did any of them stand out to you in the room, Carter? Which one and why?
I use a Sonor Straight 8 snare wires strand, on which 2 wires broke, so it makes 6 wires and I have a full sounding snare with 0 snare buzz when hitting toms and percussion.
I'm actually glad there isn't a huge difference. That's a rabbit hole I don't have to go down now, thanks! I think good quality wires are a bulk of the sound.
HS50M, and anything w/ polypropylene cones, tend to be scooped. Listen on a laptop speaker or something that's only midrange basically and it's a little more obvious (in my opinion). The Concert 12 and Equalizer 16 both sounded a bit less buzzy/ more focused/quick/snappy. And the 30 being at the opposite end of that of course (to my ears anyway, and it follows logic too - so perhaps a blind test would be interesting).
I love the Twisted 20. you barely have to turn up your snare mechanism before those Beauties are already crispy clean tight and quiet..( meaning no snare Buzz or ratteling type quiet.. they really do cut down the sympathetic snare buzz on the whole kit too.) I have them on three different drums and the effect is all the same even my 1970s Slingerland COB 14 X 6.5 has them.. this particular snare has a very large snare bed you can actually see it and it looks like the drums actually dented on both sides but it's not they just made very large snare beds in the 70s especially on that Slingerland and they work great!!... and the tone of that Chrome over brass shell still rings out beautifully even when I'm using the Genera HD dry on it the shell tone is still nice. My main snare is the 14x6.5 Pearl Free Floating Mapel/ Mahogany 3rd generation( the newest version with the regular 14 in. snare wire and throw off mechanism.) Also sounds incredible with the Twisted 20.. it just touches up against the bottom and it sounds great! no need to even turn the tension knob tighter.. they sing from the moment they touch very lightly... I would really love to see how the concert 16 sound like on that drum. But the showstopper is that bass drum sound your getting! I'm going to ask for everybody whos watching and listening to this video...Carter McLean!! What note is your bass drum tuned to??....I have the tune bot studio and reall only use it to see what note my individual drums are tuned to once i have finished tunning them.. if I really like the tone and pitch I'm getting I usually like to get a quick tune bot reading so i know what note im hearing....so.. Carter man!.. if you had a tunebot and recorded your bass drum settings we would all love to know what they are👍😁 if you can give us the fundamental note also ..or the note closest to what it's tuned to that would be Awesome! Great video!.. you're playing is Fantastic! thank you sir!..I love the super 30s, the Twisted 20s, and The 16 concerts. Honorable mention the equalizer 16.( they kind of remind me of the Twisted 20..( which is really double 20s and their different sizes if you counted them all there's 40 wires on it but just very close together ..and 2 different sizes and they ARE twisted. they're pretty damn cool when you see them up close.
I like regular Gibraltar 42s or Pearl Ultrasound 42s on my Ludwigs. Would love to see you get a 6.5 Black Beauty and Classic Maple. You have the best tuning and some of the best playing I've ever seen. Keep the Ludwig goodness coming Carter!
Nice video. That Ludwig snare sounds so good with any of those wires. Sympathetic snare buzz is a real problem that supposedly can be minimized with good snare wires. Please, if you ever do another snare wire compare, consider hitting the toms a few times just to see how the different snare wires react against the resonance. Thanks for sharing Sir.
Love the Puresound wires, especially the Custom Pro wires. I also highly recommend trying out Grover Wires made by Grover Percussion. I use the Jazz Darks, and they're extremely sensitive and crisp!
choosing a puresound video randomly, not looking after i make it play, listening to see if i hear a difference, damn that bassdrum sound good, damn that snare is perfect, look the screen, damn that guy plays effortless, scroll down and see Carter Mclean .....holy shit i understand .
It's Puresound Equalizer 16s for me, all the way. Can't go back to even 20-stands, let alone things like the 42 strand! Even 20s sound mushy and not well-defined to me, no matter how tight you make them (which just ends up choking drum anyway), but those Equalizer 16s let the tone of the shell come through. They're dry, crisp, and cut down on sympathetic buzz.
I've never seem the custom 12. They sounded pretty cool.I for the most part have stuck to 20 strand.Carter have you ever tried out the canopus vintage wires? If so what do you think of them? Thanks,David.
Can you include the equipment used to record? I can hear differences in sound and volume. I think including a harder style would round out the demo. Also, an explanation of the "series" in the puresound line would help thank for the hard work.
Nice video, but I have to say, that better comparison will be with wood snare drum, because this Ludwig will sounds amazing with any type of snares. Metal snare drums is very sensitive. I like a lot concert 12, Twisted and Equalized.
I have to agree with some of the others, that I can not notice a real difference between them all. That said, they all sound good. So in my view, any would work. I am assuming that this is a Ludwig Supraphonic snare??
I think you’re right about the shell being really high quality, but the sound has as much to do with tuning relationship of the heads, not too much tension on the wires, etc. carter has his tuning skills maxed tf out
I think for this drum I preferred the custom 30s. Nice fat splat. I’m generally not a fan of pure sound wires though. For me; Ludwig snare = Ludwig wires.
@@davidpfeifer9489 i think since he made the content so it's his right to decide if he want to sell it...you can choose whether you want to buy of course.
Sounds great but... IMHO those Earthworks mics tend to have the same "punch in your face" sound in every recording/video. If you listen to the Drum Center of Portsmouth video demos they have the same exact sound. Artifact. Have a listen at this one th-cam.com/video/119u8iTrUY8/w-d-xo.html
Bro, your Tom shakes so much when you kick. You should definitely get a stand for it. It would make the recording sound a little bit better because the Tom is sitting stable and the sound waves aren’t randomly moving about. Just a suggestion. I noticed it right away. Hope it helps. Much love!
He rarely close mics the toms on these older kits (the newer stuff he uses for more poppy songs have different kick legs / don't wobble). Guessing the wobble isn't making an audible difference in the overhead, being such a tiny difference in a mic that far away. Just my guess, have never tested.
Isn't playing the drums meant to be fun and emotional? Watched a few of your vids and you have the face of someone in the dentist's waiting room. Great playing though.
Simon, isn't your idea of playing drums a bit narrow? Not everyone expresses the same and faking it is distracting for the musicians and anyone watching (and even listening sometimes it screws up the player's vibe). Carter talks a ton about listening to the other musicians - this is sort of opposite of someone drumming who's caught up in their own emotion. And even while playing alone, some of us are not just expressing ourselves but also attentively listening to the drums and the room and responding what we're hearing. It's a different approach than simply "having fun". There's nothing wrong with either approach. Both approaches might land people very different gigs, and his I don't think care about his face (especially not LK). I don't think your comment came across as kind, just FYI.

Ludwig raw brass snares are awesome. Great vintage look and classic Ludwig brass sound.

Twisted. I had to take a second listened between the Super and Twisted and then came up with the Twisted as preference. Great video! Thanks!
It hurts how good the sound is
🎼 The snare sounds great!
I've got the Custom 16s on most of my snares. Gonna have to try those Concert 12s👍🏻
Looks like you had fun playing that drum.... you made it sound good with all the wires!

I concur with this. I hate sympathetic snare buzz, and would love to see how these compare in buzz when just hitting the toms and kick.
with that awesome snare all the wires sound great.

Nice! I use the Super 30 on my LM400 and LM402. I have Gibralter 42 on my wood snares but i'm thinking of going to the Super 30 on them too.
Twisted 20 has always been my favorite but I usually just price match a 30 from guitar center because it’s convenient and I’m lazy
JK... He left the same wires on the whole time. And they're stock.
I like the Concert wires best. Cool vid- Thanks
Golden ears picks concert 12.
Gonna get me a drum dog.

I have a new Yamaha steel snare 14 x 6,5 and I want to change the wire with a puresound. The question Is which one? Bigger or smaller than the 20?
I just bought a Black Beauty 14x5.5 which would you recommend. I’ve always been a fan of 24 and 30’s but I’m really surprised how the 12’s sound

Is this Ludwig 14x6.5 Raw Brass Snare Drum ?
I think the Equalizer 16s brought out a little more note-y shell "pop", which I really like.
they all sound good, What kind of heads are on the bass drum?

Nice Bass sound...Tell me about it...Thanks
When in doubt...... 42 strands for me!
I use the concert 12’s on my 5” supraphonic, with the ambassador hazy very taught for a nice crisp, dry ‘crack’
Ludwig snares drums just sound good I can’t really tell the difference in the actual snares. I’m saving up for a lm402.

great video. awesome pup.
What snare are you playing? It sounds so amazing!!
It seems like a Ludwig Raw Brass 6.5x14. Its like a black beauty without the nickel plating.
Is it just me or do more people immediately hear the into to Siamese Dream from SIP❤️
Where did you get that cap? It's so cool.
Sunbeom Kim Nelson Drum Shop sells them on their site.
Very cute 🐶
The 30 sounded the best, but I’d take the twisted 20 for a gig sound.
Please do a snare drum tuning tutorial :)

I want a "McLean" hat.
Love your sound man. What series Ludwig snare is that?
Looks like a raw brass
What's the snare hat lick at 3.12.
sounds like two double stroke rolls into open hi hats: RR LL (R) RR LL (R), where the (R) is an open hi hat.

busyboxst7 That’s highly possibility. Just the angle alone your Tom it changed the sound. Everything imagine.
@@LaceChaser, with a mic 2-6" away, for sure. At 3-5 feet away I don't think you're going to hear any difference moving the tom an inch or two around.
