We tried to hike the Welsh 3000s barefoot.

  • We attempted to summit all 15 of the tallest mountains in Wales, totally barefoot. I love barefoot hiking, I think it is great for your foot health and honestly just makes me feel great. Disclaimer, I don’t recommend you attempt a hike like this as your first barefoot hike! Start small, in the woods or your local park. You can build up from there as your feet get stronger. Any questions, comments, compliments or complaints, I would be very interested to hear them.

      @@johntay3831 Not really hard, but the skin thickens and becomes a bit more “leathery” and calloused!

    Why do some people like to walk barefoot ?
    - Motivations range from a desire to reconnect with nature and to seek a spiritual connection to needing to ease physical pain. Among the people we spoke to for this piece, a few choose to be barefoot at all times, while others wear shoes during winters or when stepping into establishments that mandate footwear.
    - Pleasureful: The point of walking barefoot is to experience the pleasure of feeling the surface beneath your feet. The sensations are marvelous: cool, warm, textured, plush, smooth, rough. In anything in life, if you can experience the sensations of whatever you're doing, this is a beautiful thing.
    ~ In fact, walking barefoot is natural, so normal.
    Humans have evolved barefoot and the feet are well-equipped to handle any problems they might encounter on the ground. Aside from accidentally stepping onto something that might be painful (e.g. a Lego) you’ll be fine. In fact, it’s much healthier to go barefoot, than to let your foot sweat inside your shoe, creating a dark, damp and warm environment, perfect for the growth of bacteria and fungi.
    Aside from that, your average modern shoe is too narrow for the human foot, meaning it will compress and eventually deform your foot causing all kinds of issues !

  • @johnq.public553
    @johnq.public553 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Your feet were well acclimated ergo zero issues, which most folks don't comprehend. Barefoot walking or running does not happen overnight, it comes from long acclimation, which results in some advantage over shoes.

  • @algauthier
    @algauthier 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Being barefoot is the most natural thing. Obviously one needs to work up to being able to do something like this, but it's so normal for the human body to be barefoot. Well done.
    I would say, pushing oneself barefoot is great, but only until one isn't safe anymore or one has pain. Put shoes on when you need them. It doesn't impact the legitimacy of what you've done. The community of people that love to be barefoot and wear barefoot shoes are often a community with injuries, not because they spend time barefoot a lot, but because it so often becomes and all or nothing proposition. Be barefoot when it feel great, wear shoes when that's better.

    Congratulations on your achievement. I am in awe! I also love hiking barefoot and have spent a lot of time in the Himalayas doing just that. Yes, it's much harder descending on stones barefoot than ascending. I have taken shoes sometimes just for that purpose as I've caught unawares a few times. I agree by doing such a dangerous trail barefoot you are much more aware of the environment. I would argue you are in fact less likely to risk an accident. The key is preparation and from your commentary, you are well prepared, very mindful of your surroundings, the risks, and how to manage them, and take things sensibly. I hope to see a lot more from you.

    I walk barefoot a lot and I also like hiking barefoot. Last year I climbed two highest mountains on Madeira barefoot and it was an amazing experience. One was in a sunny weather, the other one was cloudy, misty and a bit rainy. And I also became quite a tourist attraction.
    Also, I agree that you don't need good shoes to hike. You just shouldn't wear inappropriate ones ;)

    I’ve been climbing 40 years & really impressed with your adventures. I’m not good at barefoot, but I used to barefoot for around 4 years in the 1990’s. I’ve seen loads of barefoot Nepalese people in the mountains above Pokhara in 2010 & some in France & in Iran & Palestine. U asked for feedback: very bad choice of descent on Snowdon/ Yr Wyddfa: I always take 1 cheap three piece walking pole with me; especially useful for descents. The Llanberis tourist descent is a hell of a slog. Instead we have gone up either The Miner’s route or Pyg Track & then descended via Garnedd Ugain & Crib Goch & the north spur to the A4086.
    I 100% agree with you that an experienced barefooted is so much safer than the flip flop / crocs / loose trainers tourists - you’re mountaineers & adventurous. U need better navigation 🧭 skills - a 180 degree mistake is plain wrong. You don’t mention you have a compass, but you state you used GPS…. A compass is an essential way to check bearings.
    I love your open hearts & showing emotion. The 1st time we did the Welsh 3000’s, I was hallucinating on our final assent on Grib Goch & going onto Snowdon - lots of flying dinosaurs, especially pterodactylus. My friend had never told me that he’d tried the year before to do it in under 48 hours & had to stop - he was so ecstatic & disbelieving that we’d done it in a bit over 15hrs (but we missed off part of Yr Elan due to being lost in thick mist). I love had u sowed the raw emotions and joy & pain. If your ever in Devon give me a shout :)

    This past summer I discovered the joy of barefoot walking and I can’t get enough. I am barefoot most of the day and when I wear shoes they are soft thin sole canvas and I don’t wear socks. I began with waking in the park on the grass and as my feet toughened I am now able to walk on rougher surfaces. Have to be careful not to over do a good thing. I even hiked barefoot on some hiking trails. Hope to take longer and longer barefoot hikes next summer. I am determined to condition my feet even during the colder months. I noticed the coats so I guess cold barefoot is doable.

    If you don't mind recommendations, I suggest more forefoot and middlefoot strikes. Those alone should reduce further any kinetic impact on your feet, legs and back in general. Also climbing backwards downhill like the other one suggested is a good pragmatic solution to ease the rest of the trip.

    Well done, I'm an old trad climber from the 1970's and have done Crib Goch in all conditions. I don't think what you did was dangerous at all. I'm a great fan of barefoot walking but it does tend to be slower than blundering along in boots. Don't pay any attention to the nay sayers. One tip, if you get a cut on your foot compeed blister plasters work well and stay on in water. I live on the west coast of Scotland and often walk barefoot through dead bracken so get small cuts and that's what I put on to prevent infection.

At 13:20 when you show your soles the stones in the background look like an archeologic site. Do you know anything about the history of that area, it looks very interesting, Your soles look really marvellous considering the long tour in this hard environment. Not even a scratch, they look totally fine. You must have some kind of "Superwoman soles made of steel"... 😂. Glad that nothing really bad happened on that trip.

    Gah, sorry about your GoPro. That stinks! Climbing those craggy peaks without shoes...well more power to you. You must have soles like leather! 😆 I take your point about how hiking barefoot requires you to be more in tune with the terrain - it's similar to how if you are trail running down techy stuff you are paying much more attention than if you were hiking . But it seems likely to me that there is greater risk in barefoot hiking, especially in inhospitable places. Feet are so important and shoes, any kind, will offer at least some protection. Watching you climb that scree...yeesh. In a different situation with scary weather if you were forced to hurry, well that could get bad fast.
    That shot at 07:24 is telling, with those randoms descending easily while you step gingerly from rock to rock.

      I love the scenery and your story. I'm wondering if you conditioned your feet a bit more if you would be able to tolerate it better. I've been barefooting for 4 years now in all kinds of surfaces and also - 10°C (no wind) more and comfortablely over time. I am inspired by your adventures and would love to try this for myself with a couple of friends. I might combine it with a trail bike like a Honda Trail 125 with a camping hammock to establish a base camp. My main concern would be rock or mud slides. I am always amazed at how the weather can vary so much on a hike like this. Again, thank you for your video and story.

    God engineered our feet to walk the earth for an entire lifetime. Humans are the only creatures on the planet that wear shoes... we don't need to, but most people are too wimpy to let their feet touch the earth. In difficult places, bare feet are safer because you can feel your traction on the ground, your feet can conform to uneven footholds, and your natural balance is enhanced. I think your descent was more difficult because your balance point moves from the ball of your foot to your heel. You definitely have to condition your feet before you can attempt something like this though.

    Pretty stupid thing to do. Not only are you more prone to slipping and causing a fall it also has no midsole support and can severly damage your feet doing that.

    • @elventuresuk
      @elventuresuk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would argue that middle support is one of the most damaging things about modern footwear (for most people). Arches are well designed and get weaker over time when supported

    • @richardjones2811
      @richardjones2811 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elventuresuk The thing is, people with high arches or flat feet will do this and become injured. Barefoot can be acceptable for people with perfect anatomy which is rare.

    • @elventuresuk
      @elventuresuk  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@richardjones2811 I would argue that not being barefoot is what causes flat feet and high arches! I'm not a doctor or anything so I'd never tell a person with damaged feet to do something against the advice of their doctor, but some foot exercises will help strengthen those muscles and in most cases help fix the problem (I agree that barefoot hiking is likely to be uncomfortable for people with high arches and flat feet tho)

    Congrats on doing as much as you did! In my experience (13 years) feet get tough but your mind will also get tougher. Thus certain sensations that initially drove you nuts become a little more 'tolerable'.
    But feet, like all body parts, do benefit from rest. So I wonder if at least a day's rest is feasible for this challenge...?
    Anyway, I hope your mood improved, your soles healed up and should you ever try again, this experience will condition you to some of the fatigue that was certainly to blame for the second day's trials!

    Upon futher consideration, I can relate even more and admire for both your resilience and your wise decision when reaching the limit. It feels like your companion might have had better barefoot training, or that this trip was at the time suddenly too much. I know how it feels.
