      @@johntay3831 Not really hard, but the skin thickens and becomes a bit more “leathery” and calloused!

    Congratulations on your achievement. I am in awe! I also love hiking barefoot and have spent a lot of time in the Himalayas doing just that. Yes, it's much harder descending on stones barefoot than ascending. I have taken shoes sometimes just for that purpose as I've caught unawares a few times. I agree by doing such a dangerous trail barefoot you are much more aware of the environment. I would argue you are in fact less likely to risk an accident. The key is preparation and from your commentary, you are well prepared, very mindful of your surroundings, the risks, and how to manage them, and take things sensibly. I hope to see a lot more from you.

    I walk barefoot a lot and I also like hiking barefoot. Last year I climbed two highest mountains on Madeira barefoot and it was an amazing experience. One was in a sunny weather, the other one was cloudy, misty and a bit rainy. And I also became quite a tourist attraction.
    Also, I agree that you don't need good shoes to hike. You just shouldn't wear inappropriate ones ;)

    Why do some people like to walk barefoot ?
    - Motivations range from a desire to reconnect with nature and to seek a spiritual connection to needing to ease physical pain. Among the people we spoke to for this piece, a few choose to be barefoot at all times, while others wear shoes during winters or when stepping into establishments that mandate footwear.
    - Pleasureful: The point of walking barefoot is to experience the pleasure of feeling the surface beneath your feet. The sensations are marvelous: cool, warm, textured, plush, smooth, rough. In anything in life, if you can experience the sensations of whatever you're doing, this is a beautiful thing.
    ~ In fact, walking barefoot is natural, so normal: 🦶🏻☺🦶🏻
    Humans have evolved barefoot and the feet are well-equipped to handle any problems they might encounter on the ground. Aside from accidentally stepping onto something that might be painful (e.g. a Lego) you’ll be fine. In fact, it’s much healthier to go barefoot, than to let your foot sweat inside your shoe, creating a dark, damp and warm environment, perfect for the growth of bacteria and fungi.
    Aside from that, your average modern shoe is too narrow for the human foot, meaning it will compress and eventually deform your foot causing all kinds of issues !

    I’ve been climbing 40 years & really impressed with your adventures. I’m not good at barefoot, but I used to barefoot for around 4 years in the 1990’s. I’ve seen loads of barefoot Nepalese people in the mountains above Pokhara in 2010 & some in France & in Iran & Palestine. U asked for feedback: very bad choice of descent on Snowdon/ Yr Wyddfa: I always take 1 cheap three piece walking pole with me; especially useful for descents. The Llanberis tourist descent is a hell of a slog. Instead we have gone up either The Miner’s route or Pyg Track & then descended via Garnedd Ugain & Crib Goch & the north spur to the A4086.
    I 100% agree with you that an experienced barefooted is so much safer than the flip flop / crocs / loose trainers tourists - you’re mountaineers & adventurous. U need better navigation 🧭 skills - a 180 degree mistake is plain wrong. You don’t mention you have a compass, but you state you used GPS…. A compass is an essential way to check bearings.
    I love your open hearts & showing emotion. The 1st time we did the Welsh 3000’s, I was hallucinating on our final assent on Grib Goch & going onto Snowdon - lots of flying dinosaurs, especially pterodactylus. My friend had never told me that he’d tried the year before to do it in under 48 hours & had to stop - he was so ecstatic & disbelieving that we’d done it in a bit over 15hrs (but we missed off part of Yr Elan due to being lost in thick mist). I love had u sowed the raw emotions and joy & pain. If your ever in Devon give me a shout :)

    Upon futher consideration, I can relate even more and admire for both your resilience and your wise decision when reaching the limit. It feels like your companion might have had better barefoot training, or that this trip was at the time suddenly too much. I know how it feels. I did hikes where I walked for a good number of hours, but towards the end it was increasingly difficult with every step, especially on ground mixed with pebbles or worse, gravel. Whish I had the vlogging mindset then...

    This past summer I discovered the joy of barefoot walking and I can’t get enough. I am barefoot most of the day and when I wear shoes they are soft thin sole canvas and I don’t wear socks. I began with waking in the park on the grass and as my feet toughened I am now able to walk on rougher surfaces. Have to be careful not to over do a good thing. I even hiked barefoot on some hiking trails. Hope to take longer and longer barefoot hikes next summer. I am determined to condition my feet even during the colder months. I noticed the coats so I guess cold barefoot is doable.

    Being barefoot is the most natural thing. Obviously one needs to work up to being able to do something like this, but it's so normal for the human body to be barefoot. Well done.
    I would say, pushing oneself barefoot is great, but only until one isn't safe anymore or one has pain. Put shoes on when you need them. It doesn't impact the legitimacy of what you've done. The community of people that love to be barefoot and wear barefoot shoes are often a community with injuries, not because they spend time barefoot a lot, but because it so often becomes and all or nothing proposition. Be barefoot when it feel great, wear shoes when that's better.

    Congrats on doing as much as you did! In my experience (13 years) feet get tough but your mind will also get tougher. Thus certain sensations that initially drove you nuts become a little more 'tolerable'.
    But feet, like all body parts, do benefit from rest. So I wonder if at least a day's rest is feasible for this challenge...?
    Anyway, I hope your mood improved, your soles healed up and should you ever try again, this experience will condition you to some of the fatigue that was certainly to blame for the second day's trials!

    I like to walk around barefoot and people look at me. I actually appreciate it, because it means they are curious. Even if it makes them uncomfortable, the fact that they give me their concentration for a few moments means they are considering the merit of what I'm doing. Even if they give me a 'dirty' look, I always imagine that inside their mind they admire me for doing something that brings me pleasure. I generally give them a smile which tells them: "Yes, I'm enjoying this, and I'm going to continue doing this regardless of what you think of it. You can do it too, if you want to."

    If you don't mind recommendations, I suggest more forefoot and middlefoot strikes. Those alone should reduce further any kinetic impact on your feet, legs and back in general. Also climbing backwards downhill like the other one suggested is a good pragmatic solution to ease the rest of the trip.

One tip, if you get a cut on your foot compeed blister plasters work well and stay on in water. A quick suggestion for your descent… walk backwards. It’s sounds crazy, makes you look funny and may not always be the best choice depending on exact conditions, etc… but it does help ease the pressure on your feet as your knees are absorbing more of the impact.
    Sorry that this was such a hard challenge for you…. But so happy you achieved as much as you did.
    I found your channel by total chance. The algorithms seemed to notice I was watching more ‘outdoorsy’ content and recommended your channel. I’m glad it did. The channel shows a lot of promise. I hope you keep making videos.

    • @PhilWaud
      @PhilWaud ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really understand what you are saying here, and its a good suggestion when you are wearing footwear. Its an entirely different problem when you are barefoot. As your foot comes down, youre committed to where you place it so its often hitting a sharp stone or a loose stone.. As you ascend, you can test out foot placement and pick the best slot, but not when you come down. Your feet get battered and sore very quickly. I think walking backward may even be worse as it exposes your toes and the softer parts of your feet more. I hope you dont take this comment the wrong way, just wanted to share my take on what you suggest.

      @@elventuresearth Off the top of my head I can't think of what I would suggest you make. At my end I am planning to start a new channel after not updating my current one for a long time. Part of what I want to do is make short films with interesting people. So maybe I will drop you a message down the line if you would ever be up for such a thing.

    A truly extraordinary achievement. My respect! What do you estimate how many kilometers you have covered in total on the ascents and descents? How many hours did you walk barefoot in total?

    • @elventuresearth
      @elventuresearth  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to say exactly because I didn't have a gps tracker on. Maybe 10 hours on the first day and 12 on the second? For distances you'd have to check the Welsh 3000s route info ☺️

    Gah, sorry about your GoPro. That stinks! Climbing those craggy peaks without shoes...well more power to you. You must have soles like leather! 😆 I take your point about how hiking barefoot requires you to be more in tune with the terrain - it's similar to how if you are trail running down techy stuff you are paying much more attention than if you were hiking . But it seems likely to me that there is greater risk in barefoot hiking, especially in inhospitable places. Feet are so important and shoes, any kind, will offer at least some protection. Watching you climb that scree...yeesh. In a different situation with scary weather if you were forced to hurry, well that could get bad fast.
    That shot at 07:24 is telling, with those randoms descending easily while you step gingerly from rock to rock.

    • @elventuresearth
      @elventuresearth  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, I was gutted about the loss 🥲 my soles are very leathery! And I agree, shoes offer protection from the elements and that's the main reason I still wear them.
      And good spot, I left that shot in for that reason!

      That's a good question! I have been slowly working to finish it so I did Tryfan via north ridge earlier this year (Video coming soon hopefully) and will do the carneddau as another standalone day :) not really thought about doing all three sections in one hit again, that distance is definitely hard on the soles !

      @@elventuresearth Forewarned would be forearmed, to some extent. You could nerf that Glyder descent much the same way you said Em did, but also pack your trousers with a magazine or something, so you could bum-slide down without completely mincing yourself on the way.

    I try to walk barefoot as much as I can (during the warm season), attempted short hikes as well, but it would be a long way to go compared to your achievement.
    One question: how was the weather, ie temperature, on average, and how chilly was the lowest temperature and did you have any issues handling it, if so, what measures did you take?
    Thank you.

  • @VasiliTimonen

    Well done! The foot review at the end was very interesting. Did you notice your fingertips swelling up in sympathy with your soles (evidence that our distant ancestors went around on four legs)? IMHO you did well to stop when you did. Firstly, barefoot hillwalking in the wet can be lethal -I write from experience! Bare feet don't have the necessary grip on wet sloping grass or smooth rock. Then, you pointed out that the sides of your feet were hurting. Your lateral longitudinal arches took a battering, and that particular pain was a warning. It's a pity that your fourth toes are hammered, they'll never be happy with barefooting. I wonder if short metatarsals like yours reduce the risk of plantar fasciitis? I tore my left fascia on a round marble-sized pebble while on a barefoot ramble, and that meant no barefooting for six months! My non-conscious awareness of what I'm about to walk on usually saves me from that sort of hazard, but I was watching a red kite at the time.

    • @elventuresearth
