You will be surprised how many people do stupid things in the computer, specially older people. Even with this naive strategy he can get lot of people. And even without downloading anything, just by connecting the wifi (which lota of people do) he can filter your data for non encripted sites and check url requests.
Yeah, don't use a public WiFi for anything sensitive! Simples! (And personally, I wouldn't use a public WiFi period!)

I don't see how connecting to what you believe is a guest Wi-Fi or putting in your name and room makes no sense, I've been to plenty hotels that required this. Even if the guest signed in before and was later prompted to put in their name and room number they might just assume the hotel updated their sign-in process.
This kind of hacking will works for a guy who just download anything pops up.

She's on Apple the most secure device out there and will send out multiple pop ups before your device is compromised like demonstrated in the video, the only reason he was able to access her device is because she wanted it to be hacked.
I own an iMac, the device will automatically block risky software in your computer, it won’t let you open it no matter what you do.
Apple is not more secure, there are just much less "viruses" created for them because less people use them. These programs can be encrypted to bypass any security measures made by apple or Windows. One is not inherently more secure than the other, but the "hackers" will focus on windows because lots more people use that OS.

Nope. Bitten apple isn't secured that much as you think. Her PC isn't hacked by through some software she downloaded or installed, but over WiFi access. It's called "fishing" catch, but you know nothing about these things. Win and Mac OS can be hacked on a million ways, but you keep paying high price for a bitten apple as you usualy do. Advertisement really makes wonders, especially apple's. 😁

Edit: as someone (correctly) pointed out in the replies, this comment isn’t entirely fair. These attacks are easy to execute *if* you use prewritten scripts & tools. Doing it all yourself is a different story. Overall, I’m glad they published this story. The public needs to be aware of this stuff b/c it will only become more and more important as time goes on

Always use your phones hotspot feature or connect to it via USB when at a hotel. Practice at home so you know what you are doing, don't get frustrated and connect to the hackers monitored wifi.
