Key did a whole SuperM song by himself like only Key could.😁
What?
What makes *GASOLINE* so special is the fact that KEY gave his absolute all in the making of this album from the beginning until the end. He prepared a 2 hour presentation slide about how he wanted this concept to be and was heavily involved in the planning, making and execution of this entire MV from the styling to the song lyrics to the choreography, literally everything - this can be confirmed from his making films that are uploaded on the SHINee youtube channel in which he is seen depicting his ideas and constantly on the roll throughout the entire process. This can also be confirmed by Kenny the choreographer who worked with KEY for this song. She is Beyonce's backup dancer/choreographer as well as MJ's choreographer. In her words, she says "KEY is a full artist that know exactly what he wants & very developed in his vision & artistry. I learned a lot working with him, it was truly an honor. I'm a SHINee fan." That itself already speaks volumes. This era truly is like his baby and if he doesn't get the recognition & awards he deserve for this I'm gonna be hella disappointed.

i was actually kind of shocked at how odd the reception to this was by non-fans. of course, there were loads that loved it, but it was really upsetting to see a rise of homophobic remarks being made at key (and even shinee soloists in general). there were huge posts blowing up about how "unrelatable" his music is because its "too much" and "too flamboyant" and "has too many queer pop references" and its gotten to people straight up giving death treats and spitting out homophobic slurs. it upset me so much as his fan, but looking at the lyrical content of gasoline, that is exactly what he was talking about. ever since his debut, people put him down for being himself because of his eccentric self-expression and because hes "out of the norm". in gasoline, he talks about how these remarks only pour gasoline onto his ever-strong fire. its so cool and empowering to see him like this- seemingly in his final form, unafraid and confident. i couldnt have asked for a better comeback, truly.
Let the tasteless and homophobic people hate… Those who Love Key are the only ones who deserve this masterpiece.
And also I think in this song Key let them know that he doesn’t care about their opinion and he will keep slaying and delivering💙💙💙💙💙

I am so happy that SM is giving Key huge levels of creative control now. This video concept, the outfits, the lyrics, the composition of the song itself - they're all Key. Even though he isn't credited for composition, he worked with the composers to make the song sound exactly how he wanted it, down to making vocal sounds to show the composers how he wanted the instrumental to sound. My ONE complaint about this song is that SM never shells out for session musicians so we got synth brass - can you imagine how insane this song would sound with real brass??

I think someone might have said this already, but Key is currently releasing a "mini series" on the SHINee youtube channel about the making of this album. There he explains he's supposed to be multiple gods/deities, and he's supposed to be playing a different character in each outfit. Very good watch if you want to sort of get into how this came about and the creative process... very amazing
I also want to add that the SHINee solos are so creative because the artists are very involved in the whole process and have more creative freedom than other artists imo. I do think he had a bit of a budget issue tbh, because he also talked about that in Bad Love.

Love how spot on PD is with the budgeting issue and the deity/villian/god part.
i actually kind of love the fact that they skipped the second chorus. i think if they added that it would have bordered on too repetitive. by taking it out, it gave it a sort of shocking effect but also made it “just right” in terms of repetitiveness
He’s outfit was so Rich and Androgynous. Masculine with A Feminine touch!! Gives me a little of prince vibes.

Also key said that he wanted to portray few different characters. He's playing different gods and deities, inspired by both Western and Eastern mythologies and beliefs. He didn't want this mv to look just like typical "one guy wears different clothes and looks cool" hence the very different sets and outfits

Makes sense. There was a lot of Helios/Apollo/Sun King imagery, and the chain headpiece reminds be of Asian kings'/emperor's headpieces, with the rectangular hat with pearls hanging in the front.

the creativity, fluidity and power in this can be summed up quick: this is the closest to *drag* mainstream kpop has ever been. kim kibum has been carrying unapologetic innate queerness with him through his entire career and finally seeing it truly realized again (the last time that showed up to me was in born to shine) is a giant privilege
He promoted "Bound" and i think that the same kind of energy can be seen in its choreo

Since Gasoline feels like a declaration or a battle cry I want to say that Key is some sort of Deity declaring his domain
I think shinee as soloists are so different and special because they are all perfectionists! and i truly believe they care about what art and content they put out more than anyone else and will not settle for average.
After watching the MV you'll now understand why he said his staff were like, "But where can you go from here? How could you possibly top this??" All hail Key, our ✨fabulous✨ galactic overlord; where do I sign up for his cult? 🤩
I love the overflowing confidence of the song & the grandiosity of the visuals. It's so epic though, that it's not really a song I can put on repeat; it's just too much for my lowly human brain to handle more than a few times a day. Can't wait for the listening party eventually!

To be honest, I really really liked Bad Love, I think that retro sound suites him sooo well. That's why Gasoline probably isn't going to be my most replayed song by him. Nevertheless, I love this song and especially what it means for him. Because it's the first time he has this kind of celebratory song about himself as a title track, and it honestly was about time, wasn't it!!!
Also the b-sides on this album?! Simply stunning, just the first few alone, 'Villain' with Jeno, 'Bound' and 'Burn'... I ascended listening to Burn
And I know that for this channel it's less relevant, but I love how they went the extra mile with the physical albums, ever since Bad Love, the packaging has consistently been so fun and creative, I just felt the need to mention it. Because I do think he has a lot of input in these things and it's just so cool!

He really does has a lot of input! Watching the inside the gasoline behind videos, it's really cool to see his thought process and how much of his artistry he puts in various parts of the album.

They did in fact shoot this outdoors, his behind the scenes came out for the the desert and cage part, they shot outdoor because of how many dancers and people he had
It was interesting that you mentioned the budget and how some scenes were left empty/blank + how it was a good/smart decision to leave the more powerful CGI/effects towards the end. I just watched part 3 of the making of Gasoline (it's on SHINee's TH-cam channel). During one of the meetings, Key said: "If the budget prevents us from putting CGI in every scene, it may not be bad to have a set with that vibe at the end of the development of the story." Key really thought everything through like a real director and it was such a smart move.
P.S. The set did use real incense sticks! Your guess was spot on!

i love how sm artists have so much creative freedom with their solo stuff. i love gasoline so much, everything about it. ten said he didn't understand why everyone was excited about their solo projects, but after having his own song and sm asking him for input he was like "i get it now"

I just fall more in love with key every comeback and his music is just so freaking amazing!! It also helps that I just love him as a person, one of the best personalities in kpop in my opinion
I'm surprised you didn't see the connections of this video to Taeyeon's INVU. She's all about the sky and water, and he's fire and earth. She also had scenes on a similar desert looking landscape. The scene with water, was him being trapped by it, and ends with him freed and surrounded by fire looking victorious. It's mythological, and they're like deities on opposite ends of a spectrum. I love all the costumes and effects. The gold shimmery outfit looks like it's inspired by the animation short "Jibaro".

I noticed the connection but didn’t know it was like planned. Since they’re best friends, I just thought they were both inspired by a particular concept. So cool though.
Key is in my opinion the top visual artist of kpop, and probably of all music. His style, creativity, elegance, sophistication, charm, pure beauty, it is simply out of this world. And, as Blondie said: "he walks on imported air". He is unapologetically above.
His first album is also one of my favorite k-pop albums of all time. But it makes me sad when he says he was limited in his choices back then. Having said this even if he was limited-- he absolutely picked the best of the best within those limited choices because that album is absolutely FLAWLESS. Yes he topped himself after that but man I am sure any artist would be proud to look at their debut album and have that masterpiece of pop perfection be it.
This album is INSANELY GOOD

Things I was surprised by watching the making; the desert scenes were shot outside, the cube when he's on it is just a placeholder cube so the actual texture is CGI(makes sense tho since they already have the 3D model) and that the fire surrounding him at the end was real and they did several takes.👁👄👁
I honestly really liked a lot of the empty space in the mv, it felt very theatric like I was there watching the performance or ritual as it feels at times and also it lets there be much more focus on key and the dancers which I appreciate
PD you saying the most PD thing, Kibum literally said as they couldn't use CGI 100% in the MV because of budget, they would use it in the highlights and most important parts.

The way you paused and sort of had this overwhelmed look on your face after your first watch sums up how the whole Shawol fandom reacted to this mv and the song. Everything about Key's vision and artistry is overwhelming in a sense because the amount of creativity that goes in is just something you don't usually witness being expressed by kpop artists. Well, at least from my limited exposure to the kpop industry as of late. The fact that Key is such an all-rounder also plays into this display of creativity which leads me to think that he was truly born to be an artist. Not an idol, but an artist.
I like to believe that this mv is set in the same universe as INVU, in a far far away cosmic land of powerful gods and deities

Key is what look for in K-pop. Honestly all the SHINee boys are my standard for a good soloist album 😫!!

YESSS i was waiting for this!!! i loved this comeback and the album so much!! the title track has such a different vibe from the rest of the album but it made listening to the album such a pleasant surprise. the grandiose production, the anthemic chorus, the styling and greek mythology references is all SO good and really shows off key's boldness and creativity. i was always a fan of key but this was the comeback that made me go down the key rabbithole and stream all his stuff lol. he really goes against the grain and makes his own path, i'm so proud of him!
edit: to answer your question about the mixing, it definitely sounds better on streaming platforms outside of youtube. i use apple music and definitely noticed a better overall sound quality. for some reason, youtube compresses audios in a weird way. it even happens when i upload my slowed and reverbed videos to my channel :( this isn't the case for youtube music though, which is weird after checking lol

There were many episodes and lots of drama. But now that it's out, I'm happy.-Kim Kibum(gasoline live comeback)
The meeting with SM lasted 2 hours where he prepared powerpoints and sketch of his own ideas. At first the title was A-list but Kibum felt it didn't fit the concept so he thought the Gasoline was very suitable for this album. 27 out of 30 staff voted for A-list but of course Kibum will not leave it alone. This is his comeback and he also wrote the song so he fought for it.
Behind the scene of the mv is crazy! He really worked so hard for this comeback. He invested alot for this too. I'm amazed and so proud of him!
ahhhh!! i was really really looking forward to your reaction to this as a long time-viewer of yours who knows your history w key also because i ult key. this entire release has been INCREDIBLEEE, i know you dont check out concept photos but i think it really builds the whole key experience every comeback, with the bad love album being a retro-futuristic space theme, with this one (although it doesnt show in the title track) is retro horror themed. the concept photos have a straight up villain vs hero story with multiple character (a count dracula, a rebellious graveyard monster smasher, a mad scientist, a ghostbuster, and lastly a fluffy pink friend (he includes a pink friend in every comeback to symbolize his fans haha)). i think this hero vs villain storyline of the concept photos bleeds into the gasoline mv as you mentioned, as well as in the bsides (there is a literal bside named villain) so im very excited to hear what you think! i will definitely try subscribing to your patreon if im able to.
the official credits sm gave key truly isnt enough, hearing his story and watching the behind the scenes videos, he really meticulously planned every single detail in every aspect. a staff told fans that in his initial album meeting, he did a powerpoint presentation that lasted two whole hours (just the presentation not even the discussion). he planned the packaging (which is extremely cool! hes one of the few that still makes kpop packaging exciting and not-the-standard) , the title song gasoline was not only written by him but pretty much composed by him as well (as he isnt a formal composer, he literally hummed a melody, described the sound and horns and all to kenzie and she helped bring it to life), he wrote a couple bsides, helped directing the mv and outfits and everything like he really deserves so much for this and im so thankful as a fan and so proud

The desert scene is indeed filmed outdoors! They only edited the sky part. And yes, it was a budget issue sobs key himself suggested the idea of only putting CGIs at the beginning and the end of the video if the budget doesn't allow them to put it all throughout the video. He released a series of videos to show us the creative process and all his ideas coming to life for this album from the photoshoot and mood sampler, the fashion, the songs itself, to the MV on shinee's youtube channel titled "Inside The Gasoline", you should check them out!! You pointed out exactly how I felt with this video. I was hyped throughout but every so often with the black or long shots I wished they added that little extra something to give it the magic feel or highlight the choreo/outfits, which Key deserves.

Even the stiffest, dryrst folks lose it. That's the power he holds. He "I can show you a miracle" AND BOOM that's what he does everytime! I watch this MV like it's the first time each time. My exact reaction on the bridge lmaoooo I even thought that was a new verse or some sort 😭 turned out it was the bridge and then the song ends. It’s so fast paced but I love the bridge & the outro the most!

The all-black background shots are probably intentional - he makes reference to Sci-fi media in the album materials and the shots resemble similar all-black-only-the-character shots in Stranger Things & sci-fi film Under The Skin (2013).
22:27 ABSOLUTELU AGREE!!!!!!!! I totally get what you're saying about the tiny little budget limitations on what he's trying to go for.
Even from a costuming perspective, don't get me wrong, the looks are GREAT (to the level of lady gaga in the 2000s pushing pop music boundaries) but minor suggestion from me is the 2 piece structure of the shirt and pants for his gold outfit and his blue/white pearly outfit. Bc the shirt hem comes out wide, it makes it look like a boxy embellished shirt, yes extremely fancy, BUT still a boxy shirt paired with just pants. It's jsut jarring bc the rest of the outfits are so fantastical.
I would've made it into a one-piece, a leotard, or ropes, woven, or armor, or layering, layered cutouts, or a modified cloak/cape, an exaggerated peplum or pleated hanbok/jeogori!! Like SOMETHING to make it not just a shirt and pants. Bc the rest of the outfits are SO creative

You can rely follow his thought process and u can see how involved he was in everything. He’s really fantastic and unique and yeah as you said so, so creative
I found it odd that you saw this as a group song rather than a solo act by default, the thought never crossed my mind, interesting. I guess Key's ideas are too flamboyant for the K-pop scene right now. Even his staff didnt agree to make the video so crazy and aggressive :)) The song was made for Key from the first note, lyrics are his as well. Hope you can watch his 'Inside the Gasoline' series to get a glimpse of the process, MV shooting is on 4th episode. This time too he did only what he wanted, juat puahing the limits even more. Can't wait for the repackage!
