    British Army reservists have made history by mobilising for their largest-ever deployment in a single formed unit, under their own command. There are around 240 soldiers from 7 RIFLES and 5 Royal Regiment of Fusiliers who will be peacekeeping in Cyprus, after completing training in Norfolk.

    Not knocking the week-end warriors, but can some one enlighten me as to what happened after hatchet man Philip Hammond the then Defence secretary with his crystal ball gazing and pie in the sky idea of making front line regulars redundant , to be replaced after a massive recruitment drive to form a new look British Army based on Reservists, he even had the Gaul to offer inducements to the troops he made redundant , to join up ...enough said

    • @SNOWDONTRYFAN
      @SNOWDONTRYFAN 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Erich Addler Simple fact , he attempted to make up for the massive defence redundancies by coming up with the notion of recruiting 6000 + new reservists to form a so called new look British Army, which everyone laughed at , example weekend soldiers are not of the same standard and more so fitness as a infantry regular soldier, plus their day job employers would be put under pressure if they were deployed over a considerable time away from their work place, as for Hammond's crystal ball gazing about the future rolls of the British Army, and more counter insurgency wars, that went out of the window after Putin decided he wanted to make Russia great again ? as for the recruitment drive, it was a complete failure, even the once proud professionals said no to his proposal of going part time, fast forward today, that massive cull is coming back to haunt the UK , who as we speak are finding it hard to recruit regular soldiers. According to a National Audit Office (NAO) report, UK armed forces have fallen short of filling its recruits by 8,200 military personnel - the largest gap in a decade - and the NAO states will unlikely be filled within the next five years.

      @@SNOWDONTRYFAN I disagree with Hammonds decisions, but one element is specialism. Why would a Doctor, a Roboticist, a Software Developer, an Engineer etc join the Army as a regular when they can make 4 or 5 times the amount in civvy street? Reserves let these people still have good civvy careers, but help the army with their skills at the same time. There's no way the army can afford some of the £100k+ a year salaries some specialisms expect, certainly not in the numbers required, and this is a good compromise.
      As for replacing the frontline with reserves, yeah I'm against that.

    • @SNOWDONTRYFAN
      @SNOWDONTRYFAN 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@flamdwyn2523 totally agree, and have real time experience with the Reservists , more so on the tech side , and importantly how the Regular Army massively depends on the NHS etc , it was the poorest of excuses to attempt to recruit a new look Army based on a part time Army and to rub salt into the wound to even offer cash inducements to the very people they made redundant, to sign up !

      @@SNOWDONTRYFAN Saying weekend warriors is a mocking term so you were knocking them. If anything, it takes balls to work all week and then go work a weekend too. How many reg squaddies would be willing to give up their weekends that often? "real time experience with the Reservists , more so on the tech side" So youre not infantry? If not i dont think you can call them "weekend warriors" when they probably do more direct combat training than some techy regiments..

    • @SNOWDONTRYFAN
      @SNOWDONTRYFAN 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      one should understand when one posts a comment , especially one on the subject of the British Army that it should talk from a position of experience and the subsequent knowledge gained from ones own long Regular Service which includes being a TA centre PSI , as for the idea that reservists would take the place of Regular front line units as and when called up , sheer folly , however one does have a deep respect for example the reserve medical services who are on long tour attachments , especially during combat ops , and yes the TA / Army reservists will always effectionalty be known as the week-end warriors with no disrespect , which of course may ? offend the woke brigade /snowflakes etc that have infiltrated the UK Armed Forces !

      Mike Foxtrot Well my friend,what they did is the best option,otherwise do you want the army to fork out money to build places for worship for every religion followed in the army?
      The conversion will effectively save money whilst providing facilities so more of the muslims,sikhs and other faiths;primarily 2nd generation of migrants, which certain people deem ‘benefit grabbers’ serve in the army.

      We have no paramilitary force here in the uk, army and police that's it. We have some armed police units, but they are few in number and mostly deal with criminals and the thankfully few terrorists. Respect from the dreaming spires of Oxford.

    • @koolyman
      @koolyman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In the UK paramilitaries are generally banned. This is evident in that regular Police do not routinely carry guns, the rationale being to keep society civil and to avoid public fear. The main phrase is 'Policing by consent'.
      The only regularly armed Police Forces are the Ministry of Defence Police, and the Civil Nuclear Constabulary who protect military and nuclear facilities respectively. Any armed policemen get trained to a very high standard and if shots are fired they must account for every shot and are liable to prosecution if unlawful and disproportionate force was used.
      The military have no authority on policing the public.
      I do admire the ANSAR & VDP.

      The closest thing the UK had to a paramilitary gendermerie would've been the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC), but they eventually were assisted by the Army who took over security in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.
      Both the Army and RUC have been replaced by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). They are not considered a paramilitary, but are routinely armed in response to the elevated threat from illegal paramilitary groups. This is considered a better situation than previously.
