Planting Elephant Ears in a Pot. recently I potted up my winterized corms and bulbs of big elephant ears. Alocasia or elephant ears are tropical and south american plants that provide one of the best foliage features for any garden. The ones I own are 1 year old plants that I am now putting in the garden. In Pots.
These are the basic requirements and qualities of alocasia:
Position: bright but indirect light
Soil: good potting compost and well draining
Rate of growth: vigorous especially when the temperatures go up
Hardiness: tender

Thank you! It was an experiment for this application. I thought if I could plant all the rhizomes in one pot then it would produce heaps! I hope this gives us the inspiration to try something different and big 😃

They looked great in that white pot. I got my first alocasia last year on a whim ( Regal Shield ), without doing any research on it. It did great on my north east facing porch, and even over wintered out there too. I gave it a new pot with rich soil and it’s looking awesome. I finally found a plant that thrives in our brutal Texas heat👍🏻
Oh I am so glad that you found one that can stand the heat of the Lone Star State. Just remember that they like a constant feeding if they’re in a pot. Weak nitrogen solution and given often. I give mine every day. They love it!

I just bought some elephant ears roots. I planted them half way in the big pot. Between the fertilizer and then added some miracle grow and put lots of water in it.
I hope I did it right.

I had no idea you could plant so many in one pot.
I just stuffed them in a pot and all of them came up. A weekly high nitro organic feed also helped

I found it from a old New Jersey neighborhood store that’s closing out back in 2001. It says everything must go, so I asked the owner if she would sell me this pot that’s sitting on the entrance of the store. She didn’t hesitate.
I don't know what I am doing wrong but I got my young Alocasia from Home Depot and it's growing good but every leaf that sprouts and grows ends up kinking, breaking and then dying. The one you just planted looks like it has thicker leaves. My leaves are so thin but do get huge. They have a blackish color on some of them and the plant is 3' tall. It is only mass roots, no corms. I love Alocasia's and have several polly's but I probably won't buy another super thin leafed plant again because they are a pain in the arse. 🤢😾 I do water frequently and spritz it daily. Does anybody experience this? and what am I doing wrong?
The location for the plants are key Klea. I had the same issue with them years ago. Only to find out that alocasias/ elephant ears and such need shady or areas with dappled shade.
I also have the kind of elephant ears here that grow thick shiny leaves. I prefer those better now than the velvety leaves types. For me, the big shiny leaves ones give me more bang for my buck.
I water this application daily. They are HIGHLY THIRSTY and VERY HUNGRY PLANTS!!!
I feed them with a weak nitrogen solution daily as well.

It sounds like you’ve described Colocasia Illustris; I just bought one ( leaves are thin with blackish coloration ) … I placed it on my patio with morning sun, and the leaves would wilt , especially if it didn’t have a good drink. I moved it to a shadier side of the patio and it’s doing much better . I also planted it with plenty of blood meal, earthworm castings and slow release osmocote . I’ve had it 2 weeks and so far it’s going well🤞

Hi Ardith. The secret is every other day, I feed it with a VERY WEAK water and high nitro solution.

I just purchased 5 bulbs. One huge fist size and four smaller ones. Should they be placed in small pots to wake them up then transfer to a large container???
No need for a transfer. With mine I placed all of it in the pot that I chose. What’s important is the watering schedule. I just left you another message on this on your other comment. Please be mindful that your drainage holes are key. The holes should never be clogged up.
I thought Alocasia are the ones that stand up and Colocasia are the ones you planted. Alocasia upright Colocasia hang down???
That’s an interesting question and to be honest I have never classified them using that variable (leaves being upright or when they hang down). I’ll look into this for future reference as well. 👍🏼
Is it ok to grow diff kinds of alocasia this way in pots I'm abit worried about spreading as its invasive in the uk was wondering if I can do this and put pots around the garden.especially wanted alicia pink China as I know its more hardy.great vedio thank you
Thanks for the comment. I guess I lucked out as our weather here in the southern US is brief mild springs, then boom - hot summers which these plants like. To have different alocasias in a pot in the UK might be tricky. If I may, if I were you, I’d choose ones that do not spread heavily and play around with just putting them in one statement pot en masse. Hope this helps 😇👍🏼

Hi there. Thanks for chiming in. What I do with mine is I plant them all crowded in a pot. I water them daily until I see small green leaves showing. This is when I VERY FREQUENTLY (as in DAILY) water it with VERY WEAK NITROGEN-H2O Solution. I only use miracle-gro and it seems to be highly effective.
What type of sunlight do you have it under? Is it best in a east/north facing or south/west lighting?
Hello Marisela. This pot and planting application faces east/north. Alocasias/colocasias/Elephant ears need the morning sun for photosynthesis, but the harsh NC summer sun burns it. Luckily the house shades it by around 11am onwards. 😊🙋🏻♂️
I thought the elephant ears that point downwards were called Colocasia’s. Are these Alacasias or Colocasias?

When is the best time to grow elephant ears indoors,I want to star my first time
Alocasias and colocasias need good light to grow. If you have a covered stop or deck, they’ll be great locations for them. And having warmth certainly helps too. I’d grow them indoors when the shops are offering good unplanted bulbs. Costco, home depot and the like usually offer them early spring.

Hi there alocasias usually grow from tubers or rhizomes. They are dormant in winter, but in springtime reputable garden centers sell them as tubers or rhizomes. I get the really big ones for full impact.

Hi there I am in North Carolina. You may have the alocasias that have naturally smaller leaves.
what soil did you use?
Regular potting compost. I beefed it up by mixing in leaf mould. And I water this daily with weak Nitrogen solution. 1 part to 10 parts water.
What size pot was this?
It’s a fairly large one. 22inches high and 36nches n diameter along its widest point
in your pot these are not alocasias, these are colocasias!
