I LOVE the idea about a train running from Harlan to Evarts! It's a brilliant idea that should be submitted to the Tourism bureau!!! I would go in a heartbeat, and I'm sure lots of other would, too. My dad, who grew up in Harlan County, died in 1978. It's been so many years, sometimes it's hard for me to remember the sound of his voice. But I will watch the Harlan County USA movie just to hear the accent, the speech cadence, and it takes me right back to my childhood, and the sound of my father's voice.

I remember the train depot and also the old Harlan hospital that was torn down and the ackley hotel and they have put in lots of new roads and built up stores and things . And Mac's grocery store in evarts is gone . History and memories is something we can hold on to

Great video. Loved seeing the old post office I use to take dad to to get his check. Those weeds are called Queen Ann’s lace I believe. Yes we were warned that they may have chiggers and it terrified us as kids 😂

It ran up to the head of the river in Holmes Mill to the old Jericho Mines, and loaded at their Tiple. It didn’t go into Virginia. Great video guys!!

Awesome video and thanks much for posting and sharing it. I was wondering what original railroad company built and owned this branch line, but when I noticed the milepost with its pyramid top, I knew it was the Louisville and Nashville (L&N) RR which became part of todays CSX . The L&N mileposts have a pyramid top. The branch is connected to CSX's mainline line that runs between Corbin KY and Norton VA. Back in the day L&N and the Norfolk and Western (N&W now NS) interchanged freight and passengers at Norton. Not sure if CSX and NS still interchange freight at Norton. I really appreciate you folks work capturing and sharing Appalachian history and railroad history in particular. 😃

I was told the same thing about the chiggers being on those flowers . Those flowers are called queen Anns lace or queen of the meadow.

I think it would be a good idea if they used the trains to transport goods to the local stores and businesses. It would take less time and less fuel to do that. They could turn the old depots into areas to unload the trains and employ local people driving small trucks to distribute it. In winter when the roads are bad , the train can still get thru

  • @RadRoger

They could reopen those old tracks again to allow pedal cars on them that you pedal like a bicycle. I've seen quite a few videos here on TH-cam of people riding those on abandoned tracks and some of them even have little go-kart engines on them. That would be a really good move for tourism.

The track going out of Evarts toward Holmes Mill didn't go to Virginia. It stopped at Glenbrook. In the early dsys freight was hauled into Harlan County by train. My grandmother said when they moved to the Evarts area the train only went as far as Verda. From there their belongings were moved by wagon. Lots of places have converted abandoned railroads into bike trails. One good example is the Virginia Creeper Trail in Damascus VA. Lots of people come there to ride. They will shuttle you to the beginning along with your bike or you can rent a bike. Its about 17 miles long. If something like this was done in Harlan/Evarts area and it started around Holmes Mill it would probably be around 25 to 30 miles. This could really help tourism.

Many triangular concrete markers out there. They mark property lines. I have seen where they have taken old trail rails and now use them with pedal cars that you recline and pedal like a bike in a cart that fits the rails.

I was coal miner for eight years. They got laid off permanently electrician. After Barack Obama, it’s sad. It’s a very dangerous job, but you know the risk somebody working in the coal mines. God bless minors and their families.

There is a code on the side of the rail that will tell you where and when it was made, and the weight per yard of the rail. The year is spelled out but the month of manufacture is represented by hash marks representing the months.

I was always told that chiggers lived in those flowers too. I think they’re called Queen Ann’s Lace flowers. I always tried to avoid them when I was growing up and running through the fields. Nothing itched like chiggers!!

Remember stuff called " Chig-A-Rid" to put on chigger bites? It stunk, but worked...
I think my grandfather said track was 90 pounds per foot, but don't quote me on that

Nice rail walking show...(19:12) The side of the rail should give the weight number. If it was stamped 136, that would be 136lbs per yard.

They remove a rail so if they do store cars they dont want the conductor going past this point....this line is not abandoned according to CSX, if they abandon it they pull everything up. They still own it.

Well, lets take a walk back in time when George Bush was in office 41 first president, remember his vice president ? Dick Cheney now think ( Halliburton )…. Did you google Halliburton yet ? See where it says “ gas exploration “ ? Wait a minute Mr Cheney and his daughter Liz are well know republicans and from 1995-2000 the extraction of natural gas ( aka fracking) took off and the gas renaissance was started and unfortunately the amount of gas fired boilers increased and the need for coal and all of these coal fields and the trains we loved seeing are gone forever … thank you for taking some time to do some research …. Thanks for sharing this old depot and a little history, take care …

This would make an excellent bike trail! Rails To Trails should improve it.
