@@billraymond2644 The handrails are folded brass with 4 tabs on the inside of the car. Open the car from the roof side or the frame side, then with a small screwdriver while holding the handrails from the outside against the car, apply pressure to the tabs pushing them more snugly against the inside of the car. That should do it! Caution: If you have to bend tabs to remove the body from the frame or the roof from the body, always apply heat with a soldering iron first. If they are not heated they can break off. I'm not certain if the 2600 series cars have a screw on the roof for easy removal, I thing they do.
Your tip to use a light colored cloth to be sure the polishing compounds and waxes are not lifting the paint is a gem of a tip.

When in doubt check the underside first
If it's a C4 then it's probably ready for a restoration. Anything C5 considered time capsule Last of the Mohicans
