    Jack I repainted my engine looks great and very happy . But have had lots of criticism for stripping original paint .does it really depreciate value of these old engines I mean it looks so much better now but some don’t think it’s an option

      Hi Jay. Sorry for the delay. If you have a really valuable vintage piece I would NOT recommend stripping and refinishing. BUT for all those common old Lionel engines out there, I think it's fine to make them look like new. It's up to you. I love my trains and love restoring the old junkers. As I said in the video, they are worth more TO ME in a restored condition. Thanks for watching!

    Any advice on how to strip gloss paint off a locomotive without removing the original paint underneath.

    • @jackshobbyhut7208
      @jackshobbyhut7208 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry it took soooo long to reply. It would depend on the type of paint that is over the original paint. If it is an oil based enamel and it is a diecast lionel loco, you may be successful with enamel reducer. I can't guarantee that would work. The easy off will take all the paint off including original.

    Would acetone also work for stripping paint?

    • @jackshobbyhut7208
      @jackshobbyhut7208 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew, sorry for the late reply. Lacquer thinner or acetone does not work that well in removing the paint from post war die cast zinc based castings. It is however very good for removing paint from tinplate trains and accessories. That is what I use to strip paint from my Lionel Standard Gauge pre-war restorations.

    Thanks for the tip. Having never used rivets this video is helpful. I choose to Support my toy train parts dealer for a variety of reasons, I'll go with Lionel parts. If the train is special I'll use original parts from a junk train. If those parts are too scarce then Lionel reproduction parts are a last resort.
