    I found this series of videos a few years ago and continue to come back to them when working on my CS9. I am currently enrolled in a gunsmith school and use my CS9 among others while learning about extractors and such. After all these years there is still almost nothing to be found online pertaining to the disassembly/reassembly of this generation of Smith and Wesson and I still return here and rely on these exceptional videos to follow the excellent step by step procedures. Bookmark this one folks, there is nothing that even comes close. The best you can expect is a novice field strip from all the others. Thank you very much for taking the time to clearly teach the proper techniques involved. This video should be the first thing that comes up when you type in Smith and Wesson CS9 or 3913 but unfortunately for some reason you have to search hard to find it.

    I know the video is five years old, but I wanted to thank you for the detailed disassembly of the 3rd generation slide. Recently, I needed to replace the recoil spring in my S&W 4566, and I ordered a replacement from Wolff. Along with the recoil spring was a firing pin spring. Having never replaced a 3rd generation firing pin spring, you video was spot on and made the task much easier...thanks.

    Thanks for a very good explanation and description of disassembly. My 6906 was becoming almost impossible to move the safety lever. Field stripping and cleaning didn't help. Probably dirty, but after taking it down and wiping surfaces clean, it now works smoothly and easily. Really a great pistol!

    Great vid, recently purchased a 6904 that was missing the right side safety lever which would cause the whole safety/decocker assembly to become frequently misaligned and would cause the decocking function to not work and also make reassembling the pistol a bit of the bear.

    I am a master gunsmith and I enjoy watching what others do and work on, this was by far one of the most informative and in depth videos explaining things for people who do not know I have personally ever seen. Great job keep it up.. I’m sure this set of videos has helped lots if you have a model 39 to 39-2 I believe the slide install is a bit different as far as the rear site and springs underneath, The decocker is a bit different as well

    It never fails to amaze me how easy it is to take a pistol apart on TH-cam.
    I got mine apart as far as the rear sight. Even with a decent sight removal tool. I couldn't get it to budge. Yes, I took the allen out first. =) At least I got to clean and lube the assorted parts. It didn't look like that had been done before, ever. Now the safety is a LOT less crunchy.

    a trick that makes removing/inserting the slide safety lever *much* easier:
    1. put some electric tape on a pair of narrow pliers
    2. when you've trapped the firing pin behind the pin safety, instead of using a punch to push in out of the way from the rear, pull it out by the other end with the pliers protected with tape
    3. standing the slide on its nose helps - you pull and stabilize in one motion, so you don't need three hands
    this way the pin is completely out of contact with the safety lever and manipulating the lever becomes a breeze, in or out

    I'm about to replace some parts in my slide - thanks for the How To. I was wondering why the screw in the rear sight does not have to be removed or loosened? What is it for, if not to hold the rear sight in place?

    • @blubelly2
      @blubelly2  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I assume you are talking about a slide with with the fixed "Novak" style rear sight. If so, then you do have to loosen that "set screw" in order to remove the rear sight. That screw is there to provide "tension" from the sight to the slide in order to keep it from drifting during firing of the gun. Some sights fit rather loosely and it is obvious that that screw is what holds the sight in place.
      Hope this helps.

    how do i remove the safety and trigger on my S&W 459?

  • @rucker69
    @rucker69 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My 5906 does not have the small plate under the rear sight, nor a recess for it. When I took off the sight, the springs went flying. I found them, but putting the Meprolight rear sight on is going to be a task. Any advice?

    • @blubelly2
      @blubelly2  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +RhetoricalQuestion
      With the slides that do not have the plate it is still pretty easy to re install the sight. Get the sight started on the slide first and tap it into place just until it barely starts to cover the hole for the first plunger and spring. Then drop that plunger and spring in to the hole and while holding the spring in place with your finger tip or something like a pencil start to gently tap the sight further into place on the slide and you will see that the sight will cover the hole enough to release the spring with your finger. Now when you get the sight to the last hole you are ready to drop the last plunger and spring into the hole and again hold it into place just like the last time and drive the sight into place. If you are concerned about losing control of the springs again and losing them while you are attempting this try doing this work while your hands and gun parts are inside a small plastic trash bag or extra large zip lock bag. This way if anything goes flying the bag will catch it.
      Hope this helps.
      BB

    • @blubelly2
      @blubelly2  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The extractors on these guns are known to wear. Probably a good idea to replace them every 10000 rounds or so. Shooting steel case ammo is going to accelerate wear and tear on any part that it comes into contact with, especially the extractor and feed ramp. Just how much faster it will wear gun parts than brass cases is open to opinion.

    WARNING! A word to the wise regarding any attempt to remove the extractor pin. Removing the extractor pin is by far the most difficult task, it is factory pressed in with hydraulic tools. To pose even further obstacle: most of these 5900/6900 series models are long out of production and the pins are now seized in place.
    Getting the extractor pins out of an older gun can be a challenge (understatement ALERT!), as they usually require some force to break them free and get them moving. We're talking a 4 oz ball peen hammer and a starter punch. If you can manage to get the pin broke free to move with a starter (bend resistant) punch, the pins can then be removed using a 1/16" steel pin punch. Bending the 1/16" punches is likely but it so happens to be a great way to create a new 'starter punch' when the punch is broken off at the base where the taper starts.
    If the pin won't budge (and it likely won't) and you persist with more forceful strikes, you'll likely mar, or deform your slide. S&W performance center will be your only recourse then, if they even work on an altered slide, you gotta call them in the United States at their country code, then 800-331-0852. Smith & Wesson no longer supports these long out-of-production guns - though some limited parts are still available until supply runs out.
    Most extractor pins will definitely NOT move as easily as this one did in the video here. The remainder of this vid is accurate and helpful regarding slide dis-assembly and well presented.

    I thought you were doing great untill you busted out the hammer and started on that rear sight and left hammer marks...even if the hammer was nylon or something soft...get the tool and press it out.

    • @blubelly2
      @blubelly2  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +lilstevo74 Surprisingly, using a nylon hammer like I do in the video will not mar the metal surfaces. Any marks you see left behind are because the oil is completely quenched from the metal surface. As soon as you spread some oil the marks disappear. I have removed countless sights and other gun parts over the years without damaging the cosmetic surface using that same hammer.
