Tips from an old Shipwright is a great channel!! Been watching that guy for years. After working in New England for 15 years restoring antique homes, building timber frames, and commercial fishing, I know that Yankee style well. Here's something for ya: In the world, a Yankee is someone from the US. In the US, a Yankee is someone from New England. In New England, a Yankee is someone from Vermont. And in Vermont, a Yankee is someone who eats apple pie for breakfast!

Watching Pascy upset had me wanting to jump on a plane and come help sand it back with you. I too had a 2 part paint mishap and it was very frustrating. My "Lil'Squirt" is not as pretty as Mirool but she's as good as I could provide being my first time painting in the hot Texas sun.
Thanks for the raw emotion and the window into your experience, it feels good to know we share something so far away. Y'all are fantastic!

Troy you are one lucky man to have Pascale by you side. Great job that needed you both to complete 👏 My wife will help out on the boat but refuses on some jobs she feels are beyond her skil base. On my last boat i done the brush and tip method with my dad and was amazed at the results. Thanks for the videos loving the refit because you are both doing a great job and letting me learn along the way with all your great tips👏👍🏻 my next mast re-rigginng is going to be dyneema after watching your videos and other + researching the benefits. There is something to say about doing a good job regardless of who knows, you know and that counts. I work wood and I strive to make the joint the best possible I can do. No one will ever see the joint (unless it's sawn apart) but I know...and that is what counts.

It’s like I am watching along and the video comes to Pascale in the car distraught 😪. I’m with Troy, painting can get me so frustrated, I prefer to go off and only talk to imaginary people 😂. Attempting to paint outdoors in the elements and various humidity is a challenge, I so identify... I learn something new with every attempt of a paint job and I am 62yo! The roller type, nap height, material of roller also has effects 🥴. So much to learn .. You two have put heart and soul into this refit and it looks awesome in the videos 👍

If you haven't been watching Tips from a Shipwright you have been missing out on a really great resource. Lou is a no fluff do it right with the tools you have kind of guy. Truly simple methods but if it needs to be right it is about prep not the tools. He is also very good about supporting folks. A few of the channels I watch have at one time or another mentioned his help. Glad you guys are able to take a break and regroup. Teamwork and especially teamwork when you are in a relationship is so hard to manage but the rewards of figuring it out together and seeing the job as "ours" to do and seeing it done no matter what that is something! Thanks for keeping your sights on the important thing, each other!

I follow another youtube channel for learning how to paint and do fiberglass work. The name of rhe channel is "Boat Works Today". This guy is very good. He tries out all different brands and compares them. Like fiberglass or paints. And he even explains the cost differences. Plus he even talks about the tools that he uses and different sand papers. I find him to be very informative. And if you text him he even texts you back. Not just for information but to basically communicate.

Awesome workmanship you two! That’s how it goes, you have to know as much if not more when dealing with suppliers, it’s CYA, or you gonna have a nightmare on your hands sadly, it’s like we have to know everything today, because the skilled labor, and experience has left the industry for one reason or another.

Thanks for posting guys! I’ve just spent the last six weeks in Tasmanian waters and I wondered on more than one occasion whereabouts you were. We arrived in Tasmanian waters in late December and managed a full anti-clockwise circumnavigation. Our passage down the West coast was incredible! 25-40 knot Nor’Easterlies and the temperature was in the high twenties! It soon changed dramatically when we reached Port Davey and I am so fortunate to have seen that part of the world in those conditions.
Looking forward to catching your upcoming episodes guys and seeing the lovely lady in all her glory!

I greatly appreciate you both being eco friendly and rolling the paint job on your beloved Free Range beauty, I understand your frustration with the vendor not knowing their products intensely they are offering. This seems to be a more common problem as the masses populace seems to not care about any thing but taking your money with the least amount of work ethic. This is rampant here in the USA. Just like you guys I have to research products before major projects to educate myself before using them. Truly enjoy your youtube video channel. I know its a tons of work to produce quality vids. keep on producing them as it inspires me to sell my business and sail to world.

I was stationed in Menorca, Spain back in the early 80s. One of our power plant guys had an old Seat (Spanish made Fiat) that was all rusted up. He fixed the body work and then took the paint they used to paint the diesel generators on the site and painted the car with it using a brush. I thought it would look like crap but it came out really good. If you came up and sighted down the body you could spot an occasional brush stroke but you had to really look close to see them. I used to love to go down to Mahon and watch the sailboats there and dream of sailing the Mediterranean Sea. So beautiful, f they had left me there I'd still be in the Air Force.

Another interesting point. If you understand processes and best practice it takes just as long to do it once and get a show quality finish as to fix mistakes twice! That's where the expression 80% done only 50% more comes into play.

Final result was far better than the orange peel texture, you guys would not have been happy "just leaving it". It was worth the extra work and that's how you learn. You go into something knowing that you are going to make mistakes and then when it happens it's always such a surprise. I'm always amazed by the random things that derail my projects 😆. Years ago i had to paint a 68 footer, from gunnels down to antifouling was about 6 or 7 feet so using two pack i needed help to keep the edge wet, and even worse it was in high black gloss so the owner knew a young chap who could swing a brush and employed him to help me, 3 inch brushes, best brushes and while i cut in top to gunnels and from antifouling up about a couple of feet we went like hell and kept the edge going down one side, lunch breack then the other side and transom, she looked fantastic after and other people wanted their's done but i was too busy with my decorating business to spare more time, black is a very hard paint to get it to look right but we did ,never forgot seing that boat in full sail keeled over and flying, beautiful.

Great video guys and it was nice to see Troy trust his roller and not overwork the paint with a brush. I've been rolling two part paint on my own 40 year old steel hull for many years and only use the brush for around edges and fittings etc.... We only use the 100mm (4") roller on my 65ft schooner as it is much easier to control the flow and keep an even pressure on the backstroke. Another point is we use a quality Foam roller (Stanley) and switch it out to a new one about every 5-10 minutes. The secret is to not let it get saturated with paint and let the ionization process when it starts to tack off flatten out any lines you first see. Most people think it is sprayed.
Love your videos and have learned lots from you both... Nick and Zaida... StarGazer

I love your idea of raising the deck fitting attachment points by 10mm above the deck surface.People may not think too much of it unless their deck with its balsa core sinks in every time they try to stop leaks in that deck. (Like my 50 year old one) Naturally a little pond forms and adds to the aggravation. I have had to use two cans of spray gutter sealer on my deck to stop the leaks till I can install the fitting raising fiberglas escutcheons!
Regarding your spiffy polycarbonate windows. I can assure you that you can resurrect them should they get un-spiffy by using a drill mounted polishing wheel and LIGHTLY polishing with Meguiars Mirror Glaze or equivalent.
I performed miracles on my slightly mutilated Lexan motorcycle helmet visor using that substance.
You two have a fabulous show. Very informative.

You guys love that boat, I can tell. It's like a child that you're willing to do anything for. I've done projects like that before and its soul crushing when you have to go back at it again.

Thanks for this. It's daunting tackling our paint job with very limited knowledge.. some really good info here

It's good to see your perspective. On boatworks today they showed a new Alexseal roller additive that works without tipping. I really enjoy learning from everybody. Thank you🌻

I understand being a perfectionist as I an there as is my husband... I think you both did a fab job a t the "painting an tipping" but I will agree with you that small roller we call them "hotdog rollers" as there the size of a hotdog.....lol! I use them for almost everything. I teach art an ceramics. Well did....
Anyway I love the attention to detail spent on this sailboat... I am looking forward to seeing y'all set sail...Very excited for it!!! Sendin hugs to ya both!

Louis Sauzedde is a great shipwright. Love the content of his videos. He is “old school” and has a wonderful way of teaching

The Wattle Poly U400 paint has been popular in the marine industry for many years now as it is one of the easiest 2 pack paints to apply ,especially for amateur painters and is the easiest to touch up when spraying.

Great work guys. I painted the deck of my Northerner/Compass 28 earlier this year with 2 part, roll and tip. Primer, undercoat and then the top coat..... it rained. It wasn’t forecast. Took me three days to sand off the thick orange peel. Then i had to battle the morning dew. Agh what a battle.

Hi guys! love your shows! I know it's late but I have been a painter with my own company and a couple rules for my crew of up to 13 was...
1- it's not how you put it on... but how you take it off.
2- always brush from dry to wet when "laying off".
4- don't "paw at it" but long strokes work best if possible... then don't touch it... let it flow out.
5- don't be cheap with your first lay on because you can take it off quicker than you can put it on.
6- Nylon for latex... china bristle is best for oil based otherwise it "ropes too much as it dries. Never china bristle for latex because it clogs and seals the bristles.
7- I always dedicate the brush to oil or latex never interchange back and forth.
I hope that helps someone... you guys are doing a great job and I (an old dog) have learned some new tips. We have a lot more in common Troy... fun stuff... we could swap stories! Til the next one.

Such a helpful video as we're about to repaint the gunnels of our 40yr old boat. Loved the idea of less than glossy gloss topcoat to help it match in with old gelcoat. Jotun - check. Cheers guys

It's good to show the tough stressful parts af the job. It prepares others who try to do the same types of jobs for sticking through the inevitable adversity that comes up.

I loved seeing the name go back on the transom, then "Hobart". I felt strangely proud, was that a kind of re-birthing of her?

I’ve done a fair bit of painting with different paints and settled on oil paint-One Shot sign paint with enough Penetrol to slow the drying time to be able to tip. I paint my 40’ hull by myself in the water from a raft to avoid boatyard dust, tipping with the 7” foam roller as I go. With enough practice, you can get good results this way, save money and save the left over paint for next time or to color match. (I sometimes lighten with white or mix the colors.) it is easy to sand.
