- Gloss Medium vs. Matte Medium: The Epic Battle - who will emerge victorious?
Really, it's not a contest. Both are use fluid mediums for thinning out acrylic paints. You can mix them in any ratio of paint to medium you desire.

If you are new to acrylics, matte medium and/or gloss medium are a good introduction to using mediums in your paintings.
If you mix them with heavy body paints, they will make the color more smooth and brushable, less thick and textural. Acrylic paints have a slight shine to them when they dry. Using a matte medium will decrease the shine and make it more velvety in sheen. The more matte medium you add, the less shine. Keep in mind, as you add a greater percentage of the medium, the less pigment you will have in the mixture and the less coverage you will have.
Matte mediums have aggregates in the acrylic polymer emulsion that inhibit the reflection of light off of the painting surface. Therefore, it can have a cloudy appearance.
Gloss medium has the same viscosity (or thickness) as matte medium but it dries completely clear. It also INCREASES the shine of paint when mixed in. The more gloss medium, the more glossy the paint will appear when it dries.
(By the way, both of these mediums will appear shiny when wet. The difference is only apparent upon drying.)
Ask yourself if you prefer shine or no shine?
Do you want to get transparent layers?
Do you want to thin down the tube paint and make it more smooth and brushable?
Try one or both of these mediums and allow yourself to play and experiment with that they can do. The only way to really know is to try it out. Mediums can really change the depth and character of the paint and increase the expressive and color possibilities.
Why not just add water? Water dulls the paint and if you add to much (more than about 30%) it could have long-term detrimental effects on the paint film. Watch my video on underbinding (the danger of adding too much water) here. • Worst Mistake Acrylic ...

To me, when my acrylic paint dries (without anything added to it, no matter what brand I use) it always dries looking flat and blah. I like the richness of oil paint but I can't tolerate the mediums that go with it, so I have switched to acrylic paint. I was surprised to hear you say that when acrylic paint dries, it looks shiny. I guess I should just try different gels and see which one I like?

So if I have ultra matte, almost chalky paints and I want a satin finish, I would need the gloss medium in small amounts?

Hey! Can you maybe tell me what medium I should use if I want to to paint a whole canvas with only one acrylic color to create one rich, smooth, without any marks one colored canvas ? It will usually show brush strokes or other unevenness. What medium should you recommend to make the acrylic color more fluid and maybe should I just pore it over the canvas instead of paint it on? Thanks :)
Yes, pouring on it with acrylic pouring medium might get the result you desire or it may be that What you are looking for most likely is the right type of paint, rather than a certain medium. What Is the purpose of the matte medium? Is it to give the acrylic paint a thicker consistency or more manageable?

Very nice tutorial- thank you. I have a question about matte medium. I put Golden liquid matte medium over (and under) sections of silk paper that had a nice shimmer- however, after I put the matte medium, the shimmer of the silk came way down bec I didn't realize that the medium was going to be as cloudy/translucent as it is. I would have preferred to put a gloss medium and then maybe a matte varnish. Do you know of any safe way to remove the medium? Thanks.
Caren Kaziyev I am not familiar with silk paper. If it were silk fabric you might try removing it with alcohol, but as it is paper, the alcohol might damage it.
Thanks, Michele. I put a very thin gloss medium layer over it when the matte dried and it looks really good now. I thought I would do damage if I tried to remove the matte. I just had to wait until everything dried thoroughly.

Excellent question, Megan! It's a little more subtle than that and these things can be so dependent on personal taste. I would say with one thin coat of matte medium you would hardly notice it but with successive coats you might. But always best to make little sample tests on scraps of gessoed cardboard or on small canvas boards. When you say you are using matte medium as a sealer, do you mean a protective varnish? +Kim Moberg It's a thin consistency so doesn't model well. Have you tried using modeling paste? You can let that dry a little and mold like clay.
These are great - thank you. What I'm trying to do is create a thick matte coating on top of a grey cotton canvas type fabric. I'm making bags from this fabric and want a deep, smooth covering that totally masks the original fabric. I have used a soft body paint mixed in with a little matte medium (bright orange) and what I've found is that it sinks into the fabric and doesn't give this thick effect I'm looking for. Any ideas on how I could achieve this? Thank you.
Could you actually work with these two mediums together in the same canvas? As in with fine detailing. Perhaps I'd want a certain section of my canvas to have a matte look and the apple i painted I'd want it to have a glossy look. Also i am seeing other medium Gloss/Matte products saying that they should not be used as a final varnish, is this true?

Absolutely. Painters routinely use many different mediums in one painting. True they are not designed for final varnish. Check out my video on varnishing for more complete inform ation.

Yes, definitely! all the acrylic mediums, and even acrylic paint work like a glue because they all share the same acrylic polymer emulsion binder, which acts as an excellent adhesive!

Does it matter which one you use if you're going to varnish your painting with gloss varnish in the end? And for glazing, its it better to use glazing medium instead of gloss medium? I don't really know the answers, I'm just asking.
Great question, Chris! I find for myself it’s important to me to pay attention to Gloss versus Matte as part of my painting process. Because I will use them differently in different parts of painting. And then when I varnish I try to be sure to echo what’s happening on the painting with a varnish. But if you know you like gloss then you can just put it on at the end where the varnish. Everyone’s different it’s your painting! Your rules!
And as far as glazing I prefer to use glazing medium. And that might be because I painted with oil’s for so many years I like how the glazing medium levels and glides on the brush and dries more slowly. But it’s really up to you! I would try both and see which you prefer.

wayner Definitely. I have found all brands of acrylic paints, mediums and additives (with very few exceptions) to be entirely intermixable.

I listened to this without sound because i can't listen to it at the moment, so I apologize if you already stated this information, but I just purchased both gloss and matte acrylic paints but no mediums yet. So I was wondering if could I use one specific medium on both? Or do I literally have to use matte medium on matte paint, gloss on gloss, metallic on metallic etc? Lol kinda late but your response is highly appreciated.
Tanisha - you can mix and match to get the exact sheen you like. So maybe you want your gloss paints slightly more matte, add a bit of matte medium to it. You get to do WHATEVER you like. That's the fun of painting. Enjoy!

+EsteeDarla Absolutely. Both will work fine for gluing things and for decoupage.
I bought this thinking it was a gloss varnish to finish off pottery and paintings. Can i still use it by itself?
You may want to check my video called “how and why to varnish acrylic paintings”. It’s a mini course with information to help you decide. You can technically use gloss medium on unglazed bisque fired ceramic. But it’s not waterproof so it depends on what you’re using the ceramics for. If they’re just decorative and you’re not going to fire it it should work. However unglazed ceramics will absorb a lot of the water from gloss medium so you may need multiple coats To obtain a glossy sheen. And my video goes into more detail on why gloss medium isn’t my first choice for varnishing. But Liquitex gloss medium was originally designed to be a multi-purpose product for furnishing as well. But manufacturers have come up with more specialized Solutions since then. Again my video explains the difference.

Try it on a sample painting but 50% water is too much dilution. Good luck!

Yes, Kenneth. You can thin it up to 30% with water. After that you risk diluting the polymer to the degree that you will be underbinding the paint film and risk issues with the longevity of the painting. why would i want to add the medium or varnish to my paint as oppose to waiting until the painting is complete and then varnish it?
If you didn't mind the extra step, you could do either. Mediums also let you add more texture, or take it away. It just depends upon what you want your end product to look like, and what texture you prefer to paint with.
What kind of paint do you suggest that I use for glass ?
There are special paints on the market - usually designed for craft applications that are designed to adhere to glass. You can check out your local craft supplier or go online. I have used Liquitex Glossies in the past but not sure they still make that paint.
Wondering if you can apply the gloss medium over. Faber castel poloychrome colored pencil which is an oil based pencil. To make an eye look glossy?

Dee - acrylic doesn't form a permanent bond to glass unless you sandblast the glass. You can use it but it may lift in time and won't be fully adhered.

I attended a lecture by a rep from Liquitex and one of the things she said was that matte medium was just gloss medium with tiny glass beads in it. I never use matte medium because it, to my mind, just cloudies up and dulls the color. Just my two cents. :)
Hey there! Yes, matte medium has aggregates in it that prevent light from reflecting off it and creating shine that gloss medium has. Some people like the matte finish so it works for them. You can always just put a matte varnish on at the end if you want to cut out the shine.

Hello Michele, I was priming a canvas with golden gloss medium on a layer of acrylic gesso with the idea to paint with ink, but now I want to paint with acrylic, so is a good idea to paint with acrylic on the gel gloss medium surface?...
It all depends on the surface you want to work on! if you like it slick and shiny then gloss medium or gel will get that. It's not necessary to put anything over the gesso however. : )

I have $ store canvas , and I watched lady , do her oil ,black Gesso,white and grey Gesso.
However I have acrylic paint,I want to add Gesso or black paint . Then put in my trees ,then add a glazing technique,where I take blue , and swipe the soft brush with clear glaze and, make sky,and then go over Gesso and then when I add glaze the leaves turn green @ yellow. I was confused because she does oil,and I cannot because of lungs/ paint thinner,but hers was a ( clear ) stain glaze . So the liquidex is white ,I’m confused. Can I get the clear for acrylic,or is the Bob Ross clear effect ,she’s doing only for oils , or should I get liquidex,or something else. I want the picture to come to life ,like the clear medium,but I thought maybe it’s only for oil . She brushesthe Bob Ross clear oil medium I believe over and adds colour and its magic. No Michaels here,hardware ,so gloss medium is a glazing stain? Or am I wrong?
Plus I want to eventually do acrylic paint and oil on same canvas and the co,ours to pop ,but not look fake ,but also last a long time. Is it better to make my own Gesso?

Better-in bulk . ( So I’d be doing a black @ white acrylic/ Gesso,with trees m what’s the clear stuff ( even though she’s using oil , I’ve seen others use this clear,but the stain looks clear,and liquidex looks white,that’s why I’m so confused.
PS if I do add oil ,can I only use baby oil to clean brushes.

It’s just that the texture looks so different hon.
Some acrylic mediums will look cloudy when they are wet but they dry clear. If it says gloss on the bottle or glazing medium then you know it will dry clear. If it says Matt on the container then it will dry translucent. I know it’s confusing. Hang in there! you are doing a great job. Just keep painting keep at it and you will learn and succeed and things will become more clear. Most of all. Just have fun. You can’t get it wrong. Even if it doesn’t come out the way you want Just like Bob Ross says those can be our happy accidents!
I want to use these for paper collage and was wondering if there is a difference in the dried texture of gloss and matte mediums. Gloss modpodge for example dries slightly tacky and I want to avoid that, while still obtaining a clear finish.
+illfayted The matte medium will have a drier texture. When acrylic mediums and paints are dry they can be tacky in hotter temperatures. Varnishing will eliminate that. I tried to do some research on modpodge because my understanding is it's not archival. It was developed for the craft market where longetivity is as not as much of a consideration. It may crack or yellow over time. If you are concerned with longevity, consider switching to acrylic mediums.

+illfayted Don't u use "hobby" materials like mod podge for professional art work. U will be screwed in less that 20 years using that stuff. Or your buyers. Google "conservation and restoration of paintings". These company doesn't sell stuff 4 eternity - it's like the paint industry: u never get sales for "our color will hold for ages". "Now 20% off" is a much better USP and art is tricky when it comes to material science ...

what kind of medium do i need to use just tothin the paint or make a gradient? like instead of using water. i use the heavy body liquitex acrylic and i dont want to make it more matt or more glossy. do i have to buy both mediums and mix them?

When you start a channel you don't get paid for it so I only could ask my student to hold a phone and shoot me and hope they had a steady hand. Thanks for your patience. Please share what is your concern here? If you are referring to my demonstration disks of matte and gloss medium, I made those for teaching to show you the difference between the two with no paint added in. They were not part of any painting. It is a specific technique with acrylic paint where you can apply paint to a palette or sheet of plastic or glass with the express purpose of allowing them to dry and then peeling them of making free standing sheets of acrylic that you can then collage onto a painting surface for example. You can look at the work of artists Beatriz Milhazes or Leslie Shows for examples of this type of technique.

@@zuheyr1 The paint used for traffic markings is different from artist acrylic paints. There are many many types of polymers out there (the binder used to make paints). Acrylic polymers in artists paints differ from each other as well. I looked up traffic paints and they are made from latex.
