Please note: The version of the app that Dan was using during his Lost Species playtests is the Beta version of the app. The final app (which will be released in the app store before kickstarter backers receive their copies) has more varied research topics, including many more that tie 2 animal types together (example: Lories and Toads)
Dan was also using a near-final prototype of the game for his review. The final version has better graphic design on the sighting tokens, making it a little bit easier to manage the sightings process than Dan describes in his video. Although, to be honest, he is right, the peer review system in Planet X is a bit easier to manage than the sightings system in Lost Species, because of the nature of the 2D map in Lost Species (as opposed to the essentially "1D" circular arrangement of sectors in Planet X).

Thanks Ben! I’m glad that’s the case!!! Now I just need to get over the 5 empty spaces :) I do love this game and will still play both! I look forward to playing The production copy and with the final app. Then maybe I can make a follow up video. Great job on another awesome game. To even be in the same conversation of Planet X is amazing as it’s my favorite deduction Game and that’s my favorite genre! To be in my Top 10 of all time after playing more than 1000 games is pretty amazing!

@@TheGameBoyGeeks Thanks for the kind words. We are honored that Planet X is in your top 10. If we get the chance this summer, I'd love to play you head to head in Planet X at a con!

Interesting. I ordered Search For Lost Species. Our group loves Planet X so it was a no brainer. BTW I just got Sleuth in the mail based on your recommendation. You should do a top 10 deduction games of all time. I say that because you are my “go to” content provider when it comes to deduction games. 😊

Dan thanks for this. My family LOVES Planet X, and even though I am extremely selective about which games I keep in my more limited collection, this review made it clear this will probably be a big winner for us.
I really enjoy your channel and appreciate your work. You are one of the best board game commentators I have found. Thank you!

Fantastic comparison. Can completely see now how lost species has a great theme, replayable species to find and the addition of the cards; but that the streamlined nature of planet X probably makes it the better game for me. When playing a deduction game streamlining the game is a must.

Personally, I find Planet X a little bit more focused and elegant. It's kind of like Sudoku - little frills, but generally what it does it does pretty well. Lost Species is Planet X, but you get to do more things. Map is 2D instead of 1D, you get more options of what to do with the village, you have more complex movement. But honestly, I found it more fiddly to find anything without using camera traps. Moving on the coast you usually either find nothing, or get some information that won't much narrow down your search. Research and special rules are often very conditional ("can't be across the mountain from X", "isn't North of Y" and then X and Y aren't next to a mountain nor do they have anything north of them, disappointment!). So while I could quite readily win Planet X against the AI with minimal clues, even going with the simplest settings for Lost Species I manage to barely find anything by the game's midpoint, which is disappointing.
So yeah, Planet X is nice and tight no frill game, Lost Species for me didn't bring enough new interesting things to compensate for what it sacrificed.

After time has past, do you still view both as pretty good or any clear winner? The theme of both don't really jump out at me, I do like the sound of how streamlined planet X is. My family's bread and butter is deduction games, do you have any others you really enjoy?

I still like Planet X better. I did this other video 7 years ago of deduction games. th-cam.com/video/wyGmCFZl1g8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Xfzw1ESZB2gs71jM
