      This is a Tool Assisted Speedrun/Superplay. I am not playing in real time, but rather crafted a playthrough where I decided what exact buttons get pressed on which exact frames; then finally playing back those inputs.
      FCEUX, the NES emulator I used, makes this especially easy, in my opinion.

    Ok, I'll be that guy - why am I seeing enemy shots go right through the player without anything happening?

      It's because the player's hitbox doesn't match the visual sprite.
