When folks complain, it often says more about their day, or lives, than what you do. I am always grateful for those that share tutorials and hints and reviews. Thank you for all the time and energy that you spend to make videos and share with all of us. (And feel free to reread those POSITIVE comments every day, because you deserve them.)

Another quote from Eleanor Roosevelt that has been my favorite for MANY years is, "No one can make you feel inferior without your permission."
Remember that you do so much to help and inspire so many of us. And importantly you bring joy and laughter which can be very hard for some of us to find.

Thanks as usual Lindsay. Glad you have moved and this has not dampened your spirit. You are a great uplift and an inspiration to everyone. I can say for myself you are the best thing that has happened to me on you tube. I will not miss a video now and follow your blog. You have opened up a whole new life for me with your fab tutorials and i now have the confidence to tackle all sorts of projects that were previously out of my reach. Thank you again most sincerely.

I am APPALLED at anyone that watches you tube videos and makes negative remarks to positive people. People like that...who needs em! Keep it up, Lindsay! I look forward to every single one of your videos! You are such a positive person. The world needs way more of them.

sometimes for practice, I suggest that people get a vogue magazine and either use tracing paper or an overhead transparency or just draw over the faces with felt tip pens to kind of imprint it in your brain, then try to redraw it in your journal. That proves to people that faces really do fall on the lines like you are talking about in your video. Just as I was typing this, you were saying the same thing! LOL!

+Sue Cole Interesting teaching tip. When I had students collect personal mark making styles we did something similar. I would have them find subjects that they love and trace them with a black sharpie, then draw those repeating lines in nature. Basically Lindsay instructs practice repeating facial shape contours and you urge tracing repetition. These techniques of tracing over faces helps people build the hand muscle memory to draw faces and confidence!

Oh Lindsay -- I don't often comment but I am a loyal subbie for sure. I can't wait to see what you are up to each day and I look forward to hearing your beautiful voice. Why anyone would bother to comment negatively on a video of yours is beyond me -- if they don't like it .... Helloooooo!! A click of the mouse can take them somewhere else on the World Wide Web! Where I might add they can find numerous and I do mean numerous videos to comment negatively about. Next time you get one of those comments -- please just say "NNNEXXXXTTTTT!" Love you!

    Lindsay,
We are so lucky to have you share your many talents and teaching with us. I have noticed at least one "thumbs down" on most of your videos but seldom see any negative remarks; I always think that person must not understand what the thumbs mean. It is like the reviews on Amazon where someone gives a one star (they hate it) and say it was their favorite book. LOL Some of your videos are things I'm not into but that's OK. Someone else will enjoy that project. I'll just keep watching for one that interests me. Thanks for all the smiles you give us.

I think your art is unique and great. Many people as myself learn a lot by watching the different Techniques you use and apply it to their own art.

  • @jaspermartin7444
    @jaspermartin7444 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

awwww.... Dear Lindsay, it's obvious you have a heart of gold. Just such a lovely, kind and thoughtful person. Thanks for the quote, I too used to be bombarded by what felt like constant criticism, even in the midst of generous compliments. From out of the blue, those hurtful arrows felt like an ambush and never knowing where or when the next attack would occur made it even worse. Suppose that's why submerging myself in art holds such appeal. I'm hiding. :/
While I've learned better and healthier ways of dealing with various re-occurring issues over the years, for whatever reason I've never really figured out how to cope with all the sustained negativity. It's had a cumulative effect; instead of getting better at dealing with random barbs and inexplicable demands, after several decades I'm now just exhausted by it all.
The only good news is that I've finally learned that it's okay for me to just... WALK AWAY, literally just walk away from them, to not give "energy vampires" the reaction they want in that moment, and instead, to _try_ to remind myself that their negativity is not my burden to bear. I'm still working on it though...
And of course it's okay for you to express your hurt later to the rest of us, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's also struggled with the same thing. Hope you're stronger now! :-) And as always, thanks for the vid. Maybe some journaling type thing would help me too...

  • @veryberry39

If I ever had my own channel, I'd wind up shutting off the comments...which would admittedly deprive me of the genuine people, but at the same time I hate how vicious people can be. If someone doesn't like your stuff, that's fine; but if they had any respect, they'd either walk away or make their criticism constructive. I'll never understand why people enjoy being rude. For what it's worth (even though this video has been out a long while), I just spent all night binge-watching your videos!

it was one on making a multi strand necklace and what I gleaned from her, um, feedback was that she wanted specific directions where as I am more like " cut the wire the length of the necklace you want and use the beads you like" instead of "cut the wier 22" and use twelve 20 mm citron briolettes, thirty 12mm roundels etc" I would rather give you ideas and info on adapting it for with you have and want to make than just copy me exactly, where is the fun in that. My style is clearly not for her, and that is OK but 5 comments to tell me what I was doing wrong, why did she keep watching? OK I am done beating that dead horse LOL! Have a wonderful night and thanks for your kind words:)

thefrugalcrafter . Some people seem to think that people who do videos on TH-cam owe them something. I follow another person on you tube who makes money selling flower templates that she makes (and sells them for a very reasonable price), and one lady blasted her for selling them instead of giving them away! There are always bad apples in every bunch. You just have to ignore them (after calling them whatever names you want to in your head).

thefrugalcrafter . lol dead horse! please dont change your way! you have always answered people if they had specific questions... we love the way you do your videos, you inspire and give 'instructions' but not boxed in so we cant add our own creativity! when it is important, you give it to us, otherwise, most of us ' have a clue' as to what to do! and you are there for us when we have doubt/hand holding! lol DONT CHANGE YOUR STYLE! you rock! she needs to go to a professional class and PAY for it to get specific instructions i guess, this is not for her. and its not like you are getting paid to share with us... geeze! people need to get a clue and have something called 'GRATITUDE'! :) Lindsay i appreciate you very much and what you do for us....... and you may never know just what you do that helps many of us until we all leave this earth!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'm excited to start working on drawing faces now -- it's one of those things I've tried and tried to do, with less than stellar results (some of the faces are downright scary, and that's truly not what I'm going for!) Oh please don't let that negative Nelly's get you down (no offense to non-negative Nelly's). You do great work and tutorials and are an inspiration to so many of us! You have inspired me to start drawing again over just stamping and card making let alone teaching me to knit etc.
Some people need to learn that if they can't say something nice or constructive then to say nothing at all. Sending you a cyber hug!!! Thank you for all that you do and your infectious enthusiasm. You always make my day brighter! and my "art" approachable rather than frozen inside of me.

This video was totally awesome. I learnt A LOT! Thank you! I have been doing Jane Davenports drawing lessons and wanted to get some ideas on side facing and down facing so I wouldn't feel inadequate, so another perspective is really good for me to have, a whimsical face verses a more realistic face. Extremely important to any budding drawer.
Negative comments.. I don't have any videos, so I can only imagine how personal some people get, I would be devastated. I would have to remember that if they watched a video, that they obviously disliked, all the way to the end, then they were likely doing so just to be critical. Then there is 4580 views and only 4 thumbs down. (some people , like on tablets and Xbox etc can't leave comments trust me). I hope most crafter's ignore the thumbs down button - so the rest are Trolls (people who are determined to be meanie faces).
PS. I pinned this so some of my followers could have it, a simple tutorial is perfect for people that just want to have a go and have fun with it.

Hmmm I see you opened a can of worms mentioning an unhappy viewer. You have quite a few subbies so one unsatisfied viewer is impressive statistics. I don't think I saw any of the comments. I tend to take in the opinion, swish it around, absorb the criticism if it's worthy and spit it out if it's not. Sounds like this was someone having a bad day if there was five comments. I love your art journaling!! Even if a page isn't my style you motivate me to work on my weekly page. Please don't stop your art journal! I too look every day for a new video! Thank you so very much for your tutorials. I really enjoy your lighthearted approach in sharing. In regards to people critiquing your tutorials I feel that some people need to get a life! No, I personally do not take my time, money and efforts to completely expose myself to others "dislikes" or bad or insensitive comments....I am a subscriber to many TH-cam channels. And it bugs me when I hear you guys having to either defend yourselves or be bummed out because so coward is criticizing what you share. I believe that you probably sacrifice your time, some money and exposing yourself to others while someone sits in their home not doing the same but, slamming someone else. Sorry for the long comment. Keep up the great videos. Be encouraged that there are others that enjoy them. Blessings

I did comment on how much I love the new camera angle and it is just so much easier to watch and I want to see you draw and paint right side up ;) You have inspired me to try watercolour. I bought the Sakura Koi Watercolour Field Sketch Set - 24 Pan Colours and am both excited and afraid to even wet them...hahaha I would really love to see you do some more watercolour tutorials with your "new" camera angle.
Thanks and don't let anyone make you feel badly for one second about any of your work.

I have a spring stream watercolor tutorial with the new angle, it is an easy one for a first painting too if you want to try it:)

Hi Lindsay, I have just created my very first art journal page ever, something I would never have thought I could do, thanks to your infectious enthusiasm, creativity and encouragement. So I was upset to hear that you had been fretting over unkind comments left by some mean minded person. In my experience, individuals who are unable to give positive feedback &/or make constructive criticism, are generally not very capable themselves. Their negative comments are driven by jealousy. So just keep in mind how very many more of us you have encouraged and inspired and don't let one sad individual bring you down. Can't wait for my Gelatos to arrive in the post, so I can start playing with them!! :-)

Aww, thank you so much for writing:) It is very sweet. I am over the negative comments, there are always bad apples out there. All it took was for me to read the encouraging comments form folks who regularly watch to set me strait and to see the nasty comments on really popular youtube videos to realize that some people are just nasty and there is nothing I can do about it except to ignore it. Thanks and I am so glad you find my videos encouraging. Well done on your first page BTW! Have fun with your new gelatos too!

I'd give few additional tips :)
    1. Make the hair a bit bigger than the initial shape of the head, as it never lays completely flat against the head in real life. (If you don't do this, your facial features usually seem to be too high on the face.)
    2. In the 3/4 quarter view the initial oval is usually too narrow and has to be "buffed" a bit, it should continue past the ears. Otherwise it looks like the back of the head is missing.
    3. Depending on the angle in the quarter view, the eye further from the viewer can be partially obscured by the bridge of the nose.

Thanks for the quote. I know some folks who could really benefit from hearing those words! Thanks also for demystifing drawing faces. I need to just start drawing and not worry about it. I used to make cloth dolls in the 80s and paint their faces free hand and they turned out really well - it should be like falling off a bike, right?!!

omg, sketching with a sepia cray pas! um, I have those too. lol Years ago someone gave me a nice set, and some lovely markers, never used any of them. (Dried markers can be given a new life by soaking them with water). Anyway, never thought to sketch with a colored stick, much more interesting than charcoal!

    hi
love your videos and the way you show different techniques.
I have a question about art journaling. I use acrylic paint and my Gelli plate, but my pages stick together, how can I avoid it ??

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Ria-Kirstine Mølgaard you can rub a chunk of wax on the pages so they don't stick:)
