  • The Chateau de Chenonceau is a French chateau that spans the river Cher, near the small village of Chenonceaux, Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire. It is one of the most famous chateaux of the Loire Valley and is often referred to as the "Ladies' Chateau". The estate of Chenonceau was first mentioned in writing in the 11th century, and the current chateau was built in 1514-1522 on the foundations of an old mill. The bridge over the river was built (1556-1559) to designs by the French Renaissance architect Philibert de l'Orme, and the gallery on the bridge was built from 1570 to 1576 to designs by Jean Bullant.
The chateau's history is fascinating and has been shaped by powerful women throughout the centuries. In 1535, King Francis I incorporated it into the Crown Estate as part of a debt settlement. Later, King Henry II decided to offer it not to the Queen, but to his Favourite, Diane de Poitiers, “in full right of ownership, seisin and possession, completely, peacefully and perpetually, to dispose of as her own and true patrimony.” This artificial exit of Chenonceau from Crown Lands meant that it was saved, two centuries later, from the French Revolution. In the 18th century, after the chateau was purchased by her husband, it was Louise Dupin, lady of the Enlightenment, who welcomed to Chenonceau the greatest scholars, philosophers, and academicians in France to her famous literary salon.
Today, the chateau is a popular tourist destination and is well furnished with Renaissance furniture, a good collection of 16th and 17th-century tapestries, and a great number of masterpieces. Visitors can explore the bedrooms of the ladies of the chateau, who played major roles in the history of Chenonceau, and admire paintings by Le Primatice, Rubens, Le Tintoret, Rigaud, and Nattier, among others. The walk to the chateau is breathtaking, surrounded by tall trees that bathe you in a green light. As you exit the path of trees, you will immediately see the stunningly beautiful castle in the distance with its stone lions to greet you. The Chateau de Chenonceau is a must-visit for anyone interested in French history, architecture, and art.
