Thank you for this post as it brings back fond memories of my travels from Nelson to Christchurch by Newman Coach Lines & boarding the Southerner to Dunedin. Bring back the Southerner!!

I liked the outside vestibule, they had one on the northerner at the same time and I loved to stand out and have a puff and look at the night sky , listen to the DX , feel the cold air of the central plateau. Good times

Brilliant - Right from the OLD Station , even east end was being used , Old Factorys , Dual track to Rollerston , Shunting yards and Triangle to the Coast. And of course ADDINGTON WORKSHOPS in Full. Rakaia bridge getting Grated walkway installed , Track to Methven looks removed.

@@heriot-edievale9783 Yes it's an excellent video! Was privileged to ride in The Southerner Passenger Express train a few times over it's lifetime. One of its drivers in the '80s lived opposite our family home here in Invercargill - a Maori gentleman with the surname Davis. Sorry I've forgotten his first name. Drove it for many years. Might have been Gordon? Every time I heard The Southerner either leaving or returning to Invercargill I knew Mr Davis was at the controls. At Christmas 1979 a group of friends of mine plus myself [5 in total] took The Southerner to Christchurch from here in Invercargill. We were allowed to place our fully loaded touring bicycles in the guards van carriage. We rode a circumnavigation of the South Island i.e. we left Chch and headed up to Kaikoura, Blenhiem, Nelson, down to Murchison, Reefton, over to Greymouth and then down the West Coast, over to Central Otago/Hawea, then Cromwell. We split there and one of my friends and I headed to Alexandra while the others headed to Queenstown. My parents were holidaying in the Alexandra Holiday Camp and my father had a trailer and so with much relief he loaded our bicycles on to it to take back home to Invercargill. We were all aged 16/17. Traffic was kind to us. That wouldn't be able to take place now days - too many unskilled drivers plus increased traffic numbers on the roads in my opinion. I really hope you enjoyed the Last Train Ride To Clyde on 29 April 1990. Would have been a sad but on the other hand wonderful occasion.
