I was on board here that time in 1991 in Sydney NSW 2000 😅
I was onboard one of those last trains with my Mother and my Grand parents, And I even remember seeing Merv Smith get interviewed at the time by the big rear window.
I remember the Traffic Cops some were good, others well, let's say they lacked people skills.
I liked the outside vestibule, they had one on the northerner at the same time and I loved to stand out and have a puff and look at the night sky , listen to the DX , feel the cold air of the central plateau. Good times
never thought that would make me laugh
I was on board in 66’ as an 8 year old child. Just newly refitted as the Achilles Lauro! We boarded in Napoli. Disembarked in Sydney. A beautiful ship. Such a sad ending.
Damn, I miss these days!
I’d rather take this than the bus .
What a stunning station to arrive into. Typical underinvestment by nz .
Unfortunately, this is New Zealand that once was New Zealand. Now, it's a third-world country in the South Pacific. Unreal. Rogernomics f@#%! The country and future generations are suffering.
Thank you for this post as it brings back fond memories of my travels from Nelson to Christchurch by Newman Coach Lines & boarding the Southerner to Dunedin. Bring back the Southerner!!
They had great ideas! Nice looking future trains. Dreams are free. Still pretty much the same in 2024 . Nice old video though
Am I able to use some of the footage for a video? I only need somewhere around 4-8 seconds.
yeah am in Hawke's bay now and old really change a rails and house and city of napier and i love driver on kiwirail freight the napier from palmerston north and this old live at whakatu by rails on the street Anderson road and fun was grew and im from born in Hawke's bay me baby 😂 for ages and really enjoyed the story in Napier aye❤
Hi i like your video
No doubt the best way to move stuff around the country. But like all govt departments, wrecked by incompetent morons & lazy thieving workers. Thats the truth.
The ferries look in better shape then than they do now
Hey do you maybe know how much the fare was per person back then? Great video!
great and original content
wow this is a great train related video #trainlivesmatter
The Achille Lauro was built-in the 1920s for hamburger American line and I forget the name of the ship back then but the ship was pretty old by the time Of this video brusher being produced
The Achille Laurel was part of the star Laurel line which was a subsidiary of MSC. This is when MSc wanted to get into cruising but they did not want to sink a whole lot of money into it. It's sad that 3 years later the ship sank What I'm saying is when it comes to MSC cruise lines they have the best rolling stock of all the companies out there cause it's the newest they have come a long way since the Achilles Laurel
Super proud to be a rail kid🙏🙏🙏

I travelled on this ship to Europe in January 1969 and back again to Australia in November 1969. First time I'd been outside Australia - on the way over, we ran into a Force 8 gale in the Great Australian Bight. We had the usual "crossing of the line" ceremony of which I retain the photos. Great memories.
The "Intercity" era Southerner about the time NZ Rail was sold to Wisconsin Central. Still kept in very tidy condition. Gore station platform back.
The sound must have been recorded in the toliet
Not quite but a very echohy room 🤣
isn't this RM31?
yeah that's inflation for you. 🤣
My grandpa worked on that ship but now he's dead he worked the year 60 to 64 or more
They need to bring this back to cut short-haul air travel and its associated CO2 emissions.
My parents took us on a cruise on this ship in December 1993.. from Durban to Cape Town.. fond memories…
Hi, I’d like to incorporate the Kurow footage from this into a video on am making about that branch, would that be ok with you? Thanks
One assumes that despite assurances of the time it didn't all turn out as hoped as the Govenment had to step in and buy back the company.
The issue was more they were running out of money due to capital expenditure backlogs with infrastructure (which the old government Railways Department never kept up with) and the credit agencies kept downgrading them in 2003 which let to an ever increasing interest rates from their bankers (a vicious cycle) and then the inevitable cash injection and takeover from Toll Holdings NZ in late 2003, and the government bought back the rail network for $1 in early 2004. They did try their best in the end once the original shareholders had sold out and had they managed to sell the Wellington rail operation Tranz Metro (and possibly the tracks like they did in Auckland in 2001) plus some other lines and rolling stock to major users such as Solid Energy (the midland line), they may have made it through if the government had eventually bought the infrastructure. In the end Tranz Rail were spending $25m per year on track maintenance vs $50 million in the earlier years and Toll were paying $48m per year in track access fees from 2004-2008 so Toll did manage to operate with a similar, albeit higher level of expense.
Pls post more trains 🚂
I travelled on this ship from Southampton to Sydney in June 1971, fantastic voyage for the sum of £10 assisted passage!
Frankly the scenery is not that great.🙄
I second, third, and fourth that.
no narrator so we have to guess what we looking at
And now the rail service is abismal. Over expensive and hardly used
Those carriages scream of my childhood. So cool 😎
You never know when you got it good till its gone
another sad event .
George Washington chopped down a tree. And couldn’t tell a lie. When questioned by his father. He confessed yes it was I. But as he handed back the axe. He added in defence. Good training sir for lumberjacks. Or would-be presidents.
Bring it back bigger and better. We so need it very much with flights becoming so expensive these days!
Why “bigger”? It didn’t pull big passenger numbers when it was operating.
BRING BACK THE TRAIN 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚅🚅🚅🚅🚅🚅🚅🚅🚅🚅🚅🚅🚆🚆🚆🚆🚆🚆🚆🚆🚆🚆🚆🚆🚆🚆
What is the passenger loading's like on the day you traveled? Where passengers mainly from NZ?
I was on this trip. Exciting, seeing myself a couple of times in the video, albeit briefly.
👍🙏
In 1998, EDOGAWA LUMBER INDUSTRIAL and Hitachi Automotive Systems jointly developed an anti-seismic system for detached house applications that combined an anti-seismic oil damper with plywood.
Is that thing fitted to that train too?
