    People sleep on Mazdas. This is an absolute beauty. CX-5 along with the 6 have to be top of the segment. Only if people weren't so caught up with the car brand and compare cars.

      When I think of Mazda's, I think of the older mazda's with the rotary engines,, and the problems that they had with them... I wonder how many others think of the stigma of older reputations...
      PS: Yes, I realize that they may have gotten better since.. But car selection depends upon more than just looks; some people consider other values, like trade in value, or even long term reliability... Just depends upon the person..

      @@MrPir84free It’s sad how many people think the same way about Mazda. It just comes down to ignorance. People think all Mazda’s used that engine. The Wankel rotary was only used in the RX series sports cars which have been discontinued for awhile. Mazda is currently one of the most reliable brands.

    I don't normally comment, actually almost never, but your review was over the top great for me. I've been following the Mazda CX-5 for about 3 years now as a vehicle i was interested in and have been watching as I plan for the future. The CX-5 always felt behind the other vehicles I was interested in during the 2013-15 years. I don't buy new cars just due to the poor investment/value sake, so seeing the features I'm interested in coming out now really encourages me that in a couple of years I'd be able to make the plunge forward to a new-to-me vehicle. Your review was well thought out, and extremely well executed; high quality images and video and audio do not go unnoticed! Superb job, really well done.

      Yep, I also bought a 2.0 litre automatic in 2022. 100k km (62k miles) on the clock. Here in New Zealand Mazda sold this model since 2015. Alex' review is still spot on, even though this car is now 6-7 year old, and I fully agree with the review. My only comments so far are the engine noise when you're really pushing the 2.0 litre up the hill. It revs at over 3000 rpm in the mountains. On flat terrain it does everything well. Other than that, no complaints at all!

    As a 2016 CX5 owner, this review is right on point! Well done Alex!! Couple of additional things prospective owners should know: (1) no memory on the driver's seat; and (2) no traffic reports integrated in the navigation system itself. Mazda supposedly had a fall out with the traffic report provider. So to get traffic report, you have to go to the application setting, which pulls up an awful map that shows the general freeways in the area. You can't zoom in. So it's very difficult to get any detail. Plus the updates on traffic condition are not real time or accurate. In other words, if traffic report in a car is important to you, do not get the CX5. For me, I just pull out my iPhone and use Google Maps.

    • @zeuler6836

    Alex, your detailed reviews are most informative. I test drove the 2015 CX-5 last year but I wanted the improved infotainment system found in the 2016. I'm glad I waited. I bought the Grand Touring trim with all the goodies. My body fits perfectly into the driver's seat with all the controls ergonomically well positioned. I feel like the car and me are one. I drive a lot on winding mountain roads going from 2200 ft elevation to 6800 ft and the engine handles all the steep grades and the handling is crisp and sure-footed. This SUV has made driving fun again.

  • @gene978
    @gene978 9 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Hey Alex, I am so so Glad Mazda pulled away from Ford and has REALLY put themselves back in the game again with journalist recommended cars and SUV's. Have to admit they're whole line up now is a home run and to think just a few years ago Mazda was on no ones mouth except the Miata.

    • @cadsux
      @cadsux 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      gene978 Actually, they haven't fully separated. Ford still licenses variants of Mazda's MZR engine family, known as Duratec and Eco-Boost. The Mazda CX-9 still uses the Ford Cyclone V-6. The old partnership benefited both companies. The first gen Mazda3 was based on the Ford Focus; the design of the previous gen Ford Escape was led by Mazda. Not to mention other shared platforms such as the Mazda6/Fusion, CX-7/Edge and CX-9/Flex, with only the CX7 being discontinued.

    • @cadsux
      @cadsux 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, in 2013, Mazda had phased out the MZR line and replaced it with the Skyactiv line. The exception was the previous/3rd gen Miata, which was still used the MZR (with a Ford oil filter!) until the new 2016 model. Since 2003, Ford has licensed the MZR "Z" variant (aka Duratec) and since 2011, the "L" variant (aka Ecoboost). The Ecoboost is sort of the descendent of the turbo used in the Mazdaspeed3 and CX-7. It's ironic because Mazda abandoned it due to reliability issues, and now Ford has some teething problems as well.

    • @jramirez31890

      +Jonathan Altieri Love my second gen Mazdaspeed 3. That MZR once built lays down some great numbers and still lays down 400+ whp on a stock block. But yes even on my 13 model their are still a lot of FOMOCO parts.

Also, no one has mentioned the sporty covering over the steering wheel in the center. Its a mesh black, very nice....I'd like to see more of this in the interior (Very Sporty looking). My only gripe is I went with the T model in stead of the GT. Also, the noise level inside. I measured an average of 67 dBA and I was doing normal driving, normal speed, no wind. I know car lighting can be difficult to capture depending on exterior lighting and exposure etc, but it would be great if you could go over all the exterior lights and show them in the ON state. I think that would be a worthwhile addition to your videos. Keep up the good work!

    • @Snafu2346
      @Snafu2346 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Snafu2346 After seeing the CX3 review, which looks like it would be a fantastic little CUV/SUV, I think the CX3 went a little TOO small for what I need. If it had the storage capacity of its rivals like the HRV that has a significantly more storage and yet staying similarly sized as the CX3, it would have been more than enough. The other part where the CX3 doesn't work for me is that its nearly has the same clearance as a regular Mazda 3 at roughly 6 inches.
      Sadly weather can get quite bad here and light flooding can occur and I need a extra bit of clearance. The overall clearance of the Cx3 wouldn't be optimal but the CX5's extra clearance and overall higher stance would probably be fine.
      So I guess that means I have to save up the extra few $$$ for the Mazda Cx5. Or...... The other vehicles I'm looking at would be the Subaru Forester or CrossTrek. Both provide me with the utility that I need, but don't offer the driving experience that I want.
      Woe is me.

    I watched this with great interest, as I recently back-to-back-to-back-to-backed the CX-5, Escape, Forester, and Tiguan and I'm a little surprised to hear you talk about the connected feel of the CX-5 as well as praising its transmission, because those were the two areas where I felt the CX-5 fell short. Without a doubt, when I trusted the car, the CX-5 grips and has a neutral handling balance that is very impressive, but overall I found it felt "dead at the helm" and didn't make me feel comfortable through the seat of the pants...of the four CUVs I just mentioned, the CX-5 was last in this "feel" regard (even though, again, it probably had the best grip and dynamics).
    I also found the 6-speed automatic to be easily confused, overly economical in drive, overly aggressive in sport, and just generally clunky, slow to respond, and dimwitted.
    In my book the CX-5 had the best interior, the best exterior, the best economy, and the best overall handling capabilities but I found it 4th of 4 for transmission, that connected-to-what-the-tires-are-doing feel, power, and visibility. I found the Forester 2.0XT to be my top choice with its great power:economy ratio, super-sharp CVT, surprisingly playful and car-like handling, and functional, airy, quality-feeling interior.
    In any case, thanks for your continued thorough yet streamlined reviews, you cover a lot of ground in 15-30 minutes and are a great resource. Keep it up.

    • @Trendyflute
      @Trendyflute 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So to flesh it out a bit more, I drove a CX-5 Touring AWD, an Escape 2.0T SE (a very well loaded one, with the premium leather package, etc.), and a Tiguan SE 4Motion. I'm also someone who would rather have a sports car but am needing something like a CUV or small pickup for my work, so I am definitely looking at something that is dynamic.
      The Escape was honestly my favorite to drive, I loved the brakes, I loved the throttle travel (something I neglected to mention, the CX-5 had an overly touchy throttle IMO, but I am the sort who likes a long throttle pedal), I loved the drivetrain...the engine was smooth and willing and powerful, the transmission was snappy to shift and smooth and did everything I wanted it to, the steering was accurate and feelsome; overall all the driving inputs felt organic and intuitive to me, I was whipping it around comfortably within seconds of getting in the driver's seat. Really just felt great to drive. However, when I pushed it harder I could tell it was going to devolve into terminal understeer quite quickly and it just doesn't have a very large dynamic envelope...making it really the opposite of the CX-5, which felt dead to me and didn't give me confidence to explore its handling limits, but when I did push it, it was impressive. The downsides of the Escape are an ergonomic disaster of an interior; I dislike the stereo controls, the screen placement, I couldn't find convenient storage in the front for my cell phone, wallet, and ipod. The seating position is way too high and you sit practically standing on top of the pedals. It feels kinda chintzy inside, and I think it looks mediocre outside as well...like a pinched off Focus on stilts. But the Escape really nailed the drivetrain and feel for the driver IMO.
      The Tiguan was a pleasant surprise; even though I am a VW fan I've always felt the Tiguan just didn't seem very appealing, I assumed that car would feel underpowered with that engine given how I'm used to that 2.0T in smaller vehicles, but it's really quite lively. The 6-speed tiptronic works fine, it's smooth and reasonably responsive, and it gets up and goes. The Tiguan is the softest suspension of these four cars, but does still handle itself quite confidently; I can easily imagine pitching it into a corner and letting the 4motion sort you out as you get on the gas if you were driving it aggressively. It also has nice steering. I'm inclined to say it's underbraked, knowing it has the same brake disc sizes at all four corners as my 2004 GTI had from the factory, and there's about a thousand pounds weight difference between those two cars, and I thought it very worthwhile to do larger brakes on that GTI...but on the whole it was a pleasant and effective machine with a nice feeling interior, it's a good size on the road. I can't help but feel it's quite overpriced...dealers will give you a lot of money off on them because they don't sell very well, which helps, and VW reliability can be shaky in the first few model years of a given generation, so I know the '12 and '13 Tiguans have a lot of issues but later ones are better.

    • @Mitchellski
      @Mitchellski 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +greetrigh28 Just got one too. I got a manual since I had an automatic for a few days and couldn't stand it! I just felt a complete lack of control over the engine, and whenever I suddenly needed to accelerate I would lose a good second before the gearbox caught up with what I was doing!
      And as for some minor quirks 1) the entertainment system seems a bit dodgy at times (it goes to the "check your surroundings" mode for no reason and locks you out completely, no button works, and you have to wait for up to a minute!), 2) the navigation would often lose my location and show me 300m away, 3) there's a very limited amount of settings (e.g. impossible to set the system/music not to shut off with the engine, or to disable the unfasten seatbelts warning, both of which I could do in my old Alfa 159).
      Still, awesome car!

    • @greetrigh28
      @greetrigh28 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +greetrigh28 I have the 2016, same as in the review. Furthermore, forgot to mention, the touchscreen is automatically disabled the moment the car starts moving, which can be really frustrating.. So for example you're in a hurry so when you set the gps destination you slowly start driving, and suddenly the touchscreen stops responding just before you confirm (which also takes a few too many steps) and forces you to search for the knob, which arguably is more dangerous than just letting you finish using the touchscreen!

    Still the best reviewer on TH-cam. Alex, I'm conflicted between a used Mazda 3i hatchback and a used Mazda cx-5.
    I really don't need the added space of the cx-5, but being heavier it's safer than the Mazda 3 hatchback, but the Mazda 3i hatchback yields much better MPG numbers and about 80% of the space provided by the cx-5
    Decisions....

    I checked out the CX-5 brochure.
    I have to go all the way up to the Grand Touring CX-5 to get the heated side mirrors. Up here in the North East, every safety advantage (like heated side mirrors to make the side mirrors functional in the frost) is a plus.
    All Hyundai vehicles have them. Here I have to purchase the top of the line Grand Touring CX-5 to get what is basic on most other cars.

    ANOTHER AWESOME REVIEW!!!!!
    My SECOND fav CUV...First Fav in looks and design. And the TOP NON turbo...but that is only IF non turbo.
    I purchased my 2013 Escape SE with most stuff, including the awesome 2.0 turbo, for just under S26K. And although I was smitten with the CX5, I could not pass up what I still consider the best engine of any 25K car. Today I am averaging 26.9 MPG on premium fuel. Had to add another 600 in aftermarket mirror Nav/Back/Warning Syst up unit.Not sure if I would not have been better off with factory equipt even if more costly.
    And still feel that at the time...it is still/was the best option.
    The CX5 I tested at the time felt much louder on the highway that you describe. I was getting bad bad wind noise from around the driver mirror. Has this been addressed since you only mention engine noise...and even that only when pushed.
