I agree 100%. I tried your method and changed the sequence of my press and trimming and my 2 most recent blocks are the best ever! I maintained the integrity of the shape SOOO MUCH BETTER. One tips - don't preface your work by saying you are not a piecing expert . .. . indeed you ARE! You are THE FIRST to talk about the piecing in this way in my humble experience.

How refreshing to see a quilter admit it took "two days" to cut all the pieces! I don't care if you mean one hour or ten hours, I appreciate it so much. I love the paper plate storage method, that really does the job! ...and thanks also for explaining about "turn of cloth".

These are fabulous tips. I have never heard of "turn of cloth" but it totally makes sense and there is really no need for a scant if you are following your tips. Thank you for the awesome tutorial!

The folder corner clipper tool makes perfect corners every time, no drawing a line, or triming after stitching.
Great explanation on where to draw the diagonal line. I’ll definitely be trying this. I also appreciated the lesson on diagonal seam tape. I bought some, but I couldn’t figure out where along the line to place my fabric.

Love those pins going diagonally! I also like to combine it with “2 pins method”. You pin first straight on the seam after nesting to lock the position and then with the second pin you pin diagonally as you do. After that, you remove the first pin and start sewing as you do.

This is one of the best instructions I have watched. You show and explain so totally each aspect of building the block. It makes so much since with why and showing us. I have never had it explained putting the mark on the one side of the sew line. I have heard scant quarter or 2 threads over but not the why it happens.😮 even the pencil lead makes a difference. I thought it was measuring as I cut my squares out and kept messing where I put the ruler to cut my material and I would still be off. I am excited where before I shied away from HST’s. I think I will now be able to match my corners. Even the pressing with dry iron .Thanks for the tutorial.

I have always said the ruler takes up space when you are drawing the line,so the drawn line is not exa in the center. Thanks for explaining it so well.

Holding the ruler corner to corner, then using the frixon pen to draw the line along with marking the side that gets cut off , improved my accuracy 100%! I always tried drawing the line a bit off center but why I didn't think to do it your easy way is beyond me! TY!

I started marking the outside corner of my squares when you showed this before. I never heard of “the turn of cloth” until you explained it before. It helped me so much and my piecing looks so much better now. And when my projects turn out shaper, I’m always so encouraged to do even more. Thanks Becky you always explain things so well. 🤗🤗
Thank you, Becky!! I've learned so much from this!! I think I've mostly been warping my blocks by tugging at the iron and not pre-creasing them with my fingernails like you do. Also, I see you have Coriander Quilts' Praises! quilt in progress. I have that one in my queue - my mom has an ancient quilt that's falling apart on her bed, and I want to make it for her. It will only be my 4th quilt, but I've been so discouraged by my inaccuracy that I haven't finished up my 3rd one. This knew knowledge has definitely given me the motivation to move forward! :-)

This is a game changer! The hint to mark the side under the ruler side is fabulous!! I always sewed a thread width off center but wondered why some of the corners turned out perfect and others were off - now I know and can fix it - WOW -WOW - WOW - amazing!!!!
Perhaps a typo, but you mark on the side that is NOT under the ruler. Just don't want any confusion. lol Thanks for watching!

I always try to remember to sew scant 1/4", but marking the 'smaller' side is a great idea. Definitely going to start doing that. Thanks

AGREE about the machine! I have the BabyLock version (exactly the same) and it almost stitches by itself. My Bernina sits unused.
“Chain piecing” is when you run units through the machine without cutting in between. 😉

This is the best explanation I have ever heard for making theses quilt pieces. I had so much trouble before. I could fudge and make it work but now no more. Becky, I am so glad you are giving such detailed instruction on piecing, it be so good for new and some people who have not yet discovered easy efficient ways to put the blocks together. You do it just like my mom taught me some seventy years ago, however she had to use regular tape on her machine to line with the needle. This video brought back so many good memories. A long time ago I noticed the ruler followed by the marker method wasn’t keeping the integrity of the shape. I tried different ways & ended up with a way that I’ve settled on. When I mark corner to corner, I first put my marker at the tip of the corner, second move the ruler up to my marker, then go to the opposite corner & do the same. That way the ruler is supporting my marker’s line from point to point. Next time I do this I’m also going to do your way & compare them. I’m thinking we’ll be having the same results with 2 different ways. Anxious to see the results!
I have just received my BEAUTIFUL seam ripper stiletto combo and I’m so awed by how beautiful it is!!! Thank you so much for such a beautiful utensil for sewing! I’m a quilter/sew ist now making my garments and doing little quilting but loved it when I quilted and taught quilting but now I am retired and widowed and am limited on my hobbies. That seam ripped fits my hand so perfectly and is so easy to manage- all I can say is it’s a WONDERFUL product!! I watched your video showing your husband making them and oh my what talent!! He’s good but it’s plain to see he loves it and is so meticulous- great work!! Thank you I’ll cherish it forever!!😇

Thank you so much for such a fantastic tutorial! I've watched so many tutorials and never had any success with getting my points right; I absolutely despaired of ever having a square block after making an HST. I though it was me, and I'd never get it. In fact, your video popped up just before I was about to start a new quilt--it was like a miracle! Your method of marking the side of the square the ruler covered was genius! My squares/HSTs are now amazing, and my finished blocks are as close to perfect as they ever have been. Hardly any trimming. Thank you thank you! Also, the paper plate hack is brilliant!
